It may be completely unrealistic, and I know the importance of the commerical side of things, but it would be great if Ineos took a hiatus from these tours for a couple of years, just until we get the footballing side back on track.

We're probably contract bound to similar tours for years and years to come though.

Glad to see the Full Back memo has been released. About time we focused on that.

Hancko would seem the best option from that list, imo.

Left footed, plays centre back and full back. So backup to both Martinez and Shaw. Good passer, solid defender, good on the ball. Tall enough at 6"1 too.

Ticks all the boxes profile wise, imo.

The way FIFA and UEFA are treating the summer breaks it won't be long before preseason is a thing of the past anyway. Euros and Copa this summer, World Club Cup next summer, World Cup the summer after that. Add in the extended CL format, Nations League (joke of a tournament), and there's literally football on 11 months of the year, every year.

I see FIFPro have started a court case with FIFA regarding their control of the international calender and lack of player consultation/care

smith rowe going to fulham for £35m is a bit of a kick in the stones, while we are happy to hold onto mcT.

We aren't happy with the shocking fee they have offered.

I assume all the clubs that had players at the euros and copa America are in the same boat as us though with many not returning for a few weeks yet. It's not ideal but if they didn't get the break people would be on here by October complaining the players are burnt out from playing a season, international football tournaments and straight back into pre-season.

To be clear, I'm not complaining about mainoo or garnacho.

Its specifically Shaw, who barely played last season and only actually got fit 2 weeks ago, and then immediately goes on a 3 week holiday.

Having taken 5 months to get back fit, if he isn't fit to start the first game of the season in top condition, having taken a 3 week holiday, I'll be annoyed by it.

Its not like he has a long season of physical excersion to recover from.

And they have good grounds for such a complaint as well. It's getting out of hand. I can see clubs and leagues going the same route. The calendar is completely disrupted with all the "tournaments" and friendlies during the club season. Something has to give.

Do United have enough home grown players to be moving on McT right now if they need to sell AWB due to his ending contract?

Squad is allowed 17 non home players in the 25. Last summer the 8 home were Tom Heaton, Jonny Evans, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Mason Mount, Scott McTominay and Marcus Rashford.

Amad might count as homegrown this season as he is 22 (now sure if he has the 36 months or not).

Assuming Amad counts then United can only afford one player to go and AWB is about to be out of contract. If Amad doesn't then United probably need to add a homegrown player.

Selling players like Sancho, Casemiro, Lindelof, Eriksen would all be greater priority.

I don't think it's as simple as that. There's more to preseason than just fitness work. All players are expected to keep a certain level of fitness during the summer months. There's team building, tactics, strategy meetings, integration of new players and so on. Having half the team and coaches in the US while the other half are in Manchester doing their own thing is not a prep for an upcoming season.

Plus, tournament football is a completely different set of requirements. Games come thick and fast so fitness work isn't really done, it's prep and recovery work mainly.

I don't know much about workplace law, and even less about UK workplace law, but would players be legally required to take a certain amount of annual leave per year? Obviously this gets even more complicated when you factor in the Euros as the players arent working at their clubs, but they also arent on personal time off.

The club might think Shaw still needs a break with his family. Rehab is not easy on the body or the mind. He will have gone through a lot of pressure and hard work in the Euros. If you want a happy player they need that break away from football with their family.

I don't think he should be playing much at the start of the season anyway. The club will need to make sure he is ready before he starts playing regular games again after his injuries. Otherwise he will be out injured pretty soon again.

It is another sign of the poor squad building under the Galzers that he is thought of as a player needed at the start of the season never mind that he was not replaced a few seasons back.

the cap is on non-homegrown which is 17. if we fall short of home grown it just means we cant name a 25man squad, which should be fine in that you get u21's for free.

with mcT as an academy player, all of his transfer fee could go towards FFP. having said that i'm beginning to think cash flow is the limiting factor (rather than FFP restrictions) cos the greenwood sale would allow us to spend an additional €150m this summer for FFP purposes.

I can't find it but I'm pretty sure the PFA demanded the players get 3 weeks off in the Summer recently and the clubs reluctantly agreed.

Mazraoui off to West Ham, not bothered by that because he's injury prone and another ex ETH/Ajax player, missing out on selling AWB to West Ham is bothering me though!

We will probably be fairly rusty for the first few games (as will some other teams) as the starting team won’t have played together really. Maybe there will be more behind closed door friendlies but unlikely to be the full starting 11. That looked to be the case last pre-season as well. I’m not expecting a great start.

If AWB is waiting on Inter then surely they’re interested in signing him?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,790 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

Apparently interested in a swap deal with Dumfries according to Ornstein.

I haven't seen Dumfries play in a while now but the last time I seen him play he was streets ahead of AWB in every aspect of the game apart from tackling.

Has he fallen off or something?

The fact is, it doesn't matter what you do with Shaw as he's going to pick up an injury sooner rather than later regardless. His body just can't cope with the rigors of professional football and bar only playing him once a week at most there's nothing they can do about it. Even at that I'd say it would still be too much for him.

they have yes, but a player doesn't hvae to take it. A club can't demand a player return early, but a player can return early if they want to. Mudryk at chelsea, for example, reported back first day of pre-season.

this may accelerate the potential signing of ugarte

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,223 ✭✭✭Jofspring

Ya I agree on Shaw. Even take two weeks break and follow out then.

Hopefully PSG signing Neves does move things along but are they in a situation like that though that they need to sell to buy? I assume they don't have to and could keep Ugarte and still sign Neves.

PSG generally don't seem to hoarde players the way the likes of city do and Ugarte likely won't want to be a bit part player so I'd say it will get done but at around the €50m mark.

reports from Sweden last night that we are getting another new coach.

Anreas Georgson - was set piece coach at Brentford and Arsenal, was brought in as a set piece coach at Southampton by Wilcox. Was also Sporting director at Malmo and currently (?) manager at Lilliestorm.

This is a piece on him from 2021, when he was at Arsenal.

    https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/2957140/2021/11/17/andreas-georgson-on-brentford-the-rise-of-set-piece-coaches-working-for-arteta-and-why-teams-take-short-corners/

Have read he will be more than just set piece coach with us but I guess if its an area he also takes charge of that could still be a huge bump for us. We are absolutely terrible at set pieces. I would imagine he is 100% a Club/Wilcox appointment.

they tried to sell him last summer. i think the club should have told maguire he is not required and to find a new club.

When asked if he wants to stay at Old Trafford, Maguire said: "Unless the club tell me I'm up for sale or I'm not wanted there anymore.

"Everything I've heard and the action I've been shown from the club, I'm part of the future and it is time to crack on and make this club successful again, challenging for the big trophies.
