Someone went on a solo run, staff on holidays, no proper due diligence. I enjoyed watching your man from IR eat shyt tonight on the news, the same one who announced previously that they had sorted all the late arrivals, using gobbledegook speak to say that they had printed the timetables with the late arrival times as the new actual arrival times. You couldn't make it up.

They have done this many times over the years. Cooking the books essentially.

Did a day trip to Kilkenny on Saturday and must say the new late service ex. Waterford is a great addition! Was able to make a full day out of it.

Although it did end up having to wait for the down service at Athy, meaning it got into Heuston just under 30 minutes late. As a result I missed the last 145 and had to scramble to D'olier Street for a midnight nitelink. Would've been an expensive taxi otherwise!

You won't know what'll hit you when the 24/7 E1 comes in , in November.

Live on the 39A route , have had the 24 hour service for a few years now and it's made a huge difference in saving taxi fares amongst my options late at night .

Looking forward to seeing the new timetable in the morning . Have a feeling that will see 1 morning and 2 or 3 evening Maynooths revert back to Bray . Will be good news.

The lack of new infrastructure really shows up the deficits with increased frequency like this- single track line so once one train is delayed everything else on the line suffers too. We badly need massive investment in line infrastructure and tbh I don’t see it coming anytime soon

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,526 ✭✭✭p_haugh

For sure. The 39a was my backup option but it's a bit longer of a walk compared to the 7N!

It's not infrastructure, it's IE having the train service all stations out of Heuston. Constant delays of 10-15m and this impacts on the up service because they change drivers at Carlow.

It's just down to the poor scheduling decisions by IE and they don't plan to fix the problem anytime soon.

I don’t see the need to stop all stations either. They could stop at Kildare and/or newbridge only and any intermediate passengers can change there as they do on most of the other services.

I often walk from the UCD Flyover to Sallynoggin after using the 39A on weeknights. The E1 to Cabinteely or E2 to Honey Park will be brilliant. I'll get to sleep a bit earlier :)

Thanks. Is that official or just another maybe date?

Most trains on the Waterford line during the day seem to go direct between Heuston and Kildare (in either direction), some services do stop at the likes of Hazlehatch and New bridge though. It's only the last train of the day in either direction that stops at all stations.

New timetable is now online via the journey planner

Damn, there goes me being able to get the 40e to Broombridge and the train to Connolly or Docklands without waiting 20 mins.

It's going involving CPO'ing property along the track.

Or Possibly dual level track with split level platforms at some station but that's an "Out there" idea, although it has been done in some places.

    Similar to this:

Doesn't need to be the whole line.

So there will be two Northern line services running to Bray in the mornings, 06:30 ex Dundalk and the 06:55 ex Drogheda, there will also be a service running to Dun Laoghaire, the 07:55 ex Drogheda.

For the afternoon there will be the 16:40 Dun Laoghaire Dundalk and the 16:40 Bray Drogheda

For Maynooth there will be a morning service to Bray, the 07:54 ex Maynooth , there will be also an afternoon service to Dun Laoghaire, the 15:09 ex Maynooth

In the evening there will be one service from Bray to Maynooth, the 17:30 ex Bray

For the Maynooth line , the 09:41 departure ex Maynooth will continue to run to GCD

afternoon Maynooth services out of GCD/Pearse look the same albeit slight change to times, good to see the 17:09 service to Longford remain.

For the evening Maynooth services, the Connolly departures for the most part will remain the same , although good to see the 18:35 ex Connolly pushed back to 18:45 and the 21:20 will now run from GCD at 21:12

So my usual morning train pre-change was at 7.05, getting in at 7.48. It usually came at 7.08 and got in at 7.52.

After the change, it was at 7.00 getting in at 7.48. So I had to be there earlier to get in at supposed same time but in fairness, it generally did get in at 7.48.

So now going back to the later affair.

So the restoration of the old timetable for the most part has only resulted:

    • 07:50 Connolly-Belfast increasing journey by 10m and departing earlier.
    • 06:00 Belfast-Connolly increasing journey time by 9m.
    • 07:00 Belfast-Connolly increasing journey time by 7m.

This leaves more questions than answers. All the disruption and alternations for saving a few mins off above services.

I am sure the inital timetable likely resulted in better driver resourcing than having DMU's run to Bray. In prinicpal I agree with the decision to stop these operations. That would be on condition that all DARTs are 8 car units and operate to schedule. They should have had a peak service (EMU) or two that commences in Connolly after a busy Maynooth/N Commuter terminates and ease overcrowing on other DARTs. I accept rolling stock may not have allowed for this.

But what is the problem ?

Certainly Irish rail social media have been pointing to Bottleneck at Connolly since the new timetable started. One night i was waiting on the 18:35, it didnt leave Connolly until 18:50 as the incoming train was stuck at north strand junction for 10-15 minutes . Enough people have been complaining about this issue recently.

I get the feeling, the reason there are a couple of trains going out to Bray/DL is so that they don't have to cross tracks/take up platform space at Connolly and Pearse/GCD , certainly looks to be the case for the evening services.

In a weird way that developed over the years was that the commuters that continue South past GCD actually freed up the city centre area and got out of the way. While they weren't very busy South of Lansdowne Rd, it operationally made things a bit easier.

Hopefully the revised times work out.

What definitely is not needed is a damp week with low rail adhesion. There will be delays regardless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,874 ✭✭✭✭road_high

I suppose they figure these new later services may not be that busy initially at least and are trying to maximise the potential revenue stream by including more Dublin suburban stops

Anti-LRA train started last week, so that’s something.
And there’s a new rail cleaning system they are running for the first time too.

No that's not how IE operate.

This service to Carlow has being operating like that for 15+ years so need to continue the status quo but we will re-visit in a few years and end up dropping these stops.

The new Galway service got non-stop to Portarlington beacuse it's a new service.

Once the timtable is not disrupting the OTP and TD's are not sending emails, no changes or ambition needed!

I beleive the longer term plan will have the additional two services to/from Waterford including the pre 9am arrival and Carlow will get an hourly service.

Not off to a good start already. 0736 Drogheda to Pearse didn’t leave until 0743 because the Enterprise ex Belfast was running late.

What sort of timetable is in effect now?

There's a near thirty minute gap now in Portmarnock between 814 and 840 with no services?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,790 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

Southbound there are trains scheduled to call at Portmarnock at 08:15, 08:34 and 08:43?

That’s pretty much the same as the pre-August timetable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,790 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

The extra late evening services to/from Waterford are extensions of existing Heuston commuter services to/from Carlow.

You would need more drivers and more trains to do that, and at the moment that's unlikely to happen.
