Possibly. If Trump wants to wipe his arse with the US, that's his business but it makes life much harder for the rest of us. Doubly-so given Ireland's dependence on US FDI and Trump's "commitment" to repatriating said investments.

Reporter to Trump. 'What is your favourite lie?'

Trump: 'I don't tell any lies'

Reporter: ' Yes. That is my favourite too'

Agreed - There are reports that she has renegotiated the terms of their pre-nup several times since he got involved in Politics to secure her and Barrons financial future.

They are no longer married in any real sense - They spend almost no time together and even when they are "together" it is only for the cameras.

At this point , she is a highly paid actor playing the role of first lady and nothing more.

Yeah, that ruling only applies to the 10% blanket tariffs, and he will likely appeal it in the Supreme court.

Using emergency powers to impose them was the big joke in all this. Probably doesn't sit well with a normal judge.

The Supreme court will probably reject his appeal as well if the judicial system was anyway normal. But who knows?

Yeah..It's his use of these "war-time emergency" type powers for the tariffs and immigration that the Courts are pushing back on.

He can do ALL the things he's trying to do , just not by declaring an emergency and bypassing congress.

If he wants to do them he just has to get congressional approval…

I think it applies to any blanket tariffs, such as the Chinese and EU tariffs.

How come no one has challenged the "national emergency" that is the root of all his supposed EOs where he can do what he wants because it's an emergency? Who decides if it's an emergency or not? That's the thing the legal eagles should go after cos once an emergency is described as something, or if it's ruled that the US isn't in an emergency, it takes the legs from under a lot of this rubbish.

There are at least a couple of challenges to just that making their way through the system at present.

Trump at West Point: wearing a partisam MAGA hat while giving agraduation address, and going on bit of a political rant:

    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/may/24/trump-west-point-graduation

And there are doubts if he stayed as per custom to shake hands with all the graduates:

    https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/trump-west-point-shake-hands-golf/

Note that Joe Biden (that doddery fool who aslo undertook an arduous return journey to Kyiv) had enough energy and respect to stay and personally meet all the graduates.

US GDP -0.2% in first quarter

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-05-29/us-economy-shrinks-0-2-on-weaker-spending-larger-trade-impact

Was above +3 under Biden quarter after quarter

Another quarter like this and it’s officially another Trump recession

Is the woman in that clip smiling indulgently at his moronic idiot rambling, or trying not to laugh out loud at them ?

With botox it`s difficult to tell the difference.

The irony is one of the things that Trump probably hates now is that its several [12 I think] states that took the lawsuit to the Trade Court seeking to overturn his EO's. It flies in the face of his support for the states to be given the right to choose their future for themselves over the decisions of federal government, in this case his.

That is Judge Jeanine Pirro, aged 73, Interim Attorney for DC and former Fox News contributor

How will the Liehouse spin it, obviously it's Biden's economy, but the actual GDP growth beat estimates by 33%? Only drop of -0.2% vs the estimate of -0.3%.

I think they just gonna blame Biden.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,075 ✭✭✭✭briany

    Trump already said it.

"I think the good parts are the Trump economy and the bad parts are the Biden economy because he's done a terrible job"

In essence, Trump is saying that he cannot do anything bad to the US economy. Anything bad must be someone else's fault. There is no reasoning with that mindset.

That's the story of his entire life - He is utterly incapable of taking responsibility for anything bad or even slightly negative.

He is never wrong , never makes a mistake and always wins - In his deluded mind anyhow , so any bad news is simply dismissed out of hand as either "fake news" or if it can't be denied , he'll find someone else to blame it on.

It doesn't matter how ridiculous that attempted blame looks , he's always able to rationalise it in his head..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,082 ✭✭✭✭Leroy42

Well, the tariff decision is a complete disaster for him. Regardless of how they spin it, and they will, and say they will appeal, etc, but in all likelihood, this is the end of the matter.

But the row back on the tariffs is the easy bit. China, EU, hell, even the UK, which tried to negotiate with him, will now all see that he is powerless and it's all pointless. His big 'stick' was that at any point, if they didn't come to the table, he would increase the arbitrary tariffs. As he did with the EU. Now that threat has been taken away.

His entire economic policy has been dumped. Bringing back jobs was predicated on tariffs. Raising billions of dollars, predicated on tariffs. Tariffs will still be a thing, but he will be in charge of them ,and his late-night insults and demands will now simply be ignored.

That's not what the report says, and CBS should feel bad. They even put a contradictory statistic in their own article. Here's the actual report.

    https://www.bankrate.com/banking/savings/emergency-savings-report/

The question asked was "would you dip into your emergency reserve to cover a $1000 unexpected bill", not "could you dip into your emergency reserve".

Almost 3/4 of respondents had an emergency reserve, about half had a reserve in excess of three months' worth of expenses.

The report indicates that a sudden $1000 bill is not considered an emergency by a significant portion of the population to justify dipping into their emergency reserve, neither does it indicate an inability to replenish the emergency fund shortly afterwards should they do so. Even those without a designated emergency reserve may not have particular issue, depending on how they are prioritizing their income usage. (Eg accepting risk of low reserve in order to pay off installment loans sooner or putting more money into the retirement account)

FWIW, I'm one of those 24% who would answer "put it on the credit card". I like getting the air miles, and I get about a month and a half to pay it off without accruing interest.

She hasn't been a judge in over 30 years and was literally a low level judge in a small town for a couple of years.

The idea that she still gets to be called "Judge" is just so silly - It gives a level of "gravitas" to her that is utterly undeserved

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 192 ✭✭tarvis

Could be time to hold on tight. Wouldn’t put it past Trump to create an ‘emergency’ big enough to justify his pet project - via Ukraine maybe??

Hell hath no fury like a dissed despot !

Apparently enjoys a drink…Should get on well with the defense secretary.

    https://www.hindustantimes.com/world-news/us-news/jeanine-pirro-s-drunk-episode-haunts-her-after-appointment-as-u-s-attorney-for-dc-101746749708851.html

In 2020, Pirro faced a wave of online criticism after appearing on Justice With Judge Jeanine 15 minutes late, with many viewers accusing her of being intoxicated. The former district attorney from Westchester County, New York, apologised for the delay, attributing it to "technical difficulties," but soon after, she struggled to clearly articulate her points. Her dishevelled appearance, slurred speech, and apparent confusion led many social media users to speculate that she was drunk, with some even highlighting the state of her hair as a sign of her disoriented condition, as reported by the Daily Mail.

But yet they will be aggrieved by having to call Dr. Jill Biden, Dr. Jill Biden….

Exactly - He's now forced to use the route that most trade deals are done.

Months/Years of negotiation between trade teams followed by a really detailed deal document that needs to get approved by Congress in the US and the Government of the other country in the deal.

But he has no interest or patience for any of that , if for no other reason than no deals would likely get done in the life-time of his Presidency.

He wants big splashy "media moments" where he looks powerful and awesome. He has no interest in the actual work involved in running a government and doing proper trade deals

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,075 ✭✭✭✭briany

Since the Republicans hold a majority in both houses of Congress, I suppose that means that tariffs are still possible to enact in this way. It's also possible that some Republicans would dissent on a vote, but how likely is that in Trump's purified Republican party? I don't know if it's expedience or Trump's ego that made him go so heavy on the EO route when he had the legislative numbers to give his policies more legitimacy anyway.

Alternatively, Trump could opt to simply ignore court rulings - something his administration has already flirted with in the ongoing immigration saga.

I voted Biden and deplore calling his wife Dr. anything. She had a PhD in education, with this dissertation: "Student Retention at the Community College: Meeting Students' Needs." Now, that sounds really significant.

In my experience it always seems the PhD. in Education most commonly calls themselves Dr., as if to impart some gravitas. IMO MDs can call themselves Doctor, but no others. Ed. PhD. is probably a better moniker.

So they would continue to levy tariffs on imports without a legal basis?

How many American citizens would be involved in that process and would they all be legally exposed?

What if Trump wanted to change the tariffs..would those same people enforce the new rates and blindly follow the leader's executive orders?

Will they (and Trump) be held in contempt of court?

How can Trump arrange an "emergency" at short notice if that is the "solution"?
