The time will come when there won’t be a need for Fox News- they’ll just accept without question - as long as our party keeps the rapists and criminals out of America and there’s just two genders and white people without disability get the good jobs, then MAGA can rule for ever. That’s essentially what they’ve voted for and they’re getting it

The base already accepts without question, so Fox News is defunct in that sense. The network just serves to further validate what they already believe and that little dopamine shot the viewers get keeps them tuning in, so the network makes money.

It's really Fox News who need MAGA. Trump has turned on the network before when they seemed to be trying to distance themselves in the wake of 2020, but the prospect of losing the majority of its viewership to something like Newsmaxx (which sounds like a The Day Today episode) made them abruptly reverse course.

There was a woman on a vox pop before his first election that stated rather adamantly that he would destroy America.

Still remember her for some reason, but turns out she may well have been right.

Yeah, I remember reading stories about Rupert Murdoch telling Trump his time was done after 2020, and here we are.

Fox shelled put nearly a billion in penalties after they got caught in Trumps rigged election nonsense, and he showed he had them by the short hairs.

Yeah the China tariffs are starting to become the source of ridicule now even amongst more conservative commentators for this very reason. I'd say Navarro will be the fall guy, he will be sacked soon. Trump must be fuming despite the bravado for the cameras.

Really at this point the US is so bad that anybody thinking of going there would be better off not going and going somewhere else instead.

Apparently, ICE (US immigration and customs) has the power to detain literally anyone in a room for many hours and go through their phone etc - even if the person has done nothing suspicious or anything to attract their attention.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,091 ✭✭✭✭8-10

I've always wondered how that works for work phones, where it's not actually your own property

And can they force you to unlock it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,953 ✭✭✭yagan

It's the wording on the US government website, it's completely at the discretion of the border control officer if they want to give you a hard time if you look like their partner that they're not getting on with at the moment.

I don't think it matters. You'd be the one in front of them, they probably won't care if it is a work phone or a personal phone. If theyd ask you to unlock it, I think you'd have to do it.

AFAIK fingerprint or face lock aren't protected by the Fifth Amendment.

Password maybe but they can ask nicely while there's still time to board the return flight.

And a burner phone might look suspicious.

I remember hearing some pretty bad stories of people getting pulled out of line at the US customs in Dublin airport during his first term so I can imagine what is going on now is on steroids now. You really just are flat out better not going to the US at all at this point. It just isn't safe.

Honestly anyone going there should be detained, by our side also, imo it's similar to going to Russia at the moment, they are both attacking the eu.

The housing market is not doing well right now people are afraid to buy as no one knows the extent the tariffs will effect the Economy will the cost of building materials go up Every paper has articles about the coming recession what goods will increase in price . All this uncertainty and the constant daily changes to tariffs is causing traders to lose faith in the value of the dollar Today's news certain tech products will be exempt from tariff increases .

Measles is spreading as rfk Jr refuses to urge people just to get the measles vaccine instead talking about vitamin A Theres no economic expert that supports trumps policy's on tariffs or thinks higher tariffs are good for consumers or the economy in general .

All the signs point to a recession and maybe stagflation high inflation and a slow economy with more job loss,s

It's going to take a month or so for the true tariff effect to impact inflation. Some companies have stockpiled months of supply. I believe that why we have seen Irish pharma exports skyrocket the past few months (so ignore the doomongers when the exports drop)

I think the small family businesses who rely on cheap materials from China will be decimated, especially those who have ordered and paid for stock from China well in advance and when it lands, they are hit with a massive tariff bill.

Very easy to forget the small businesses when it's the billion dollar ones who seem to sway Trump.

This happened to me years ago when I was traveling alone with a baby, way back when Obama was president. I said the wrong thing when they were asking me questions and i got a grilling, but ultimately the situation was cleared up. What's new or different about it now? I don't think USCIS have been given any new, additional powers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,615 ✭✭✭✭Peregrinus

No, but they are said to be exercising the powers they have a lot more aggressively.

I think trump is an extreme example of toxic masculinity and also ignorance or even hatred of non American countries .He has sacked usaid workers who help provide help and medical supplies to foreign country's in case of emergency and help to stop the spread of disease around the world .Tourists are now reluctant to travel to America due to harassment by ice or customs officials eg they scan thru your phone and social media posts for political content He seems to like Putin more than he likes other European liberal politicans that are traditional American ally's

He is pushing a negative conservative America first policy with limits on free speech or the right to protest

Before trump came along the dollar was the strongest international currency of choice for international trade and a safe haven for traders who fear volatility or risks in investment

Now the dollar is falling as investors rapidly switch to other safe currencys

Also traders are selling off American bonds as the fear the American economy is 📉 trending towards a recession as consumers reduce spending on luxury items

1000s of small business,s are in danger as the cost of materials rises due to the tariff war

America,s ability to be a superpower and materials at a cheap price relys on the strength of the economy

Traders don't get involved in politics they just buy bonds and stocks that they think will be safe and retain value and not be subject to volatility

Right now they are selling off all Americans investments and switching to safer more predictable investment funds

Trump and his family are investing in electronic funds like bitcoins or meme coins they can promote he has pushed for extreme policy's against even students who have visas to study in American colleges

American CEO,s are worried about trumps extreme policys and the falling value of the dollar but they fear retaliation from trump if they dare to criticize him in public

Its almost as if trump wants America to fall into recession as long as it hurts foreign countries with high tariffs

The problem is tourists are being harassed if they are found to have social media posts that are critical of trump or are critical of the Israeli government s policy on the war in Gaza

Canadian tourists are putting off traveling to the us due to trumps policys on trade with Canada

Millions of American jobs rely on income from tourism

“Millions of American jobs rely on income from tourism”

It doesn’t seem to bother the administration maybe they’re preparing to invite millions of Russians to spend their holliers in the USA

So, we are clear that apparently Trump isn't a fascist, however - he is absolutely fine with the government deciding to scoop up any person they want and disappear him without any due process, to a country where he *will* face torture/slave labour, and will baldly refuse any attempt by the US courts to rectify the situation?

Is he refusing to abide by the SCOTUS order to repatriate that innocent man? (never mind the 200 or so other men disappeared with no due process)

They send an innocent man to prison abroad and wash their hands of it, but when the wife of a US diplomat kills a British teenager by driving carelessly, they made sure was back in America safe from justice.

A work colleague is heading to USA (west coast) for two weeks today……will be interesting to hear about his experiences getting through immigration and in general gis view of the place as he’s a ‘first timer’…😀

I see Bukele was re-elected because the Supreme Court there "reinterpreted" (Wikipedia's words) the constitution to allow more terms. Bukele is a strongman. To his credit, he has got the homicide rate way down but he's another who doesn't care about legal concerns and delights in performative cruelty. He's another cryptobro, too.

No wonder Trump's cozying up to him.
