Weather looks fairly atrocious for the next month. Cool and unsettled. Frequent rain and cold rain. Flooding could become a concern in Eastern parts.

The only chance of dry is probably gaps between lows and rain or showers.

I wouldn't rule out at least falling snow sometime in the next two weeks. There seems to be a signal for the weather to turn colder but low pressure never seems to be far away. I've always wanted to experience lying snow in April so it would be typical if it happened this year since I will be in Greece for a good chunk of April. The silver lining to that is that at least I'll get warmth on the other side of the Euro trough were it to verify 😎

Can't complain too much though since I've been absolutely spoiled for snow and wintry weather from September to March, February aside.

I’d rather experience a dose of the runs than lying snow in April. What we need now is dry mild bright weather and fast.

There are tentative signs the weather may settle down in April but very tentative. Don't be at all surprised if Lows coming sliding in to wash away that possibility.

Here in the coastal west/south west anyway we need a break. A dry, settled and mildish period is needed as places are sopping and bar a few days here and there there hasn’t been a let up really. Even from a general mental health standpoint I think it’s needed people are commenting about rain since last July and when will it let up. So definitely no snow and just get on with spring.

Pretty sure there was lying snow around around Roundwood in Wicklow on 1st April 1980. Farmer had lamb in kitchen because of it. I was holding it and got yellow shxt on my confirmation suit.

    you might be right!

what an exceptional winter it has been for northern Scandinavia with no end in sight, the ice on the many rivers and lakes there has to be the thickest it’s been for many years. There will be serious flooding there when the thaw eventually comes.

Plenty of cold air going south as far as spain for the next while...this will mix up the warm air down there and get it moving..expect this to send waves of very warm air up north to some places probably from around mid April into May...could get very warm early...for the time of year

Any prospects of a bit of dry weather on the outlook.pissed off dairy farmer here for my sins😁

Tonight’s GFS pushes the frontal snow back 1 day to Thursday

Unfortunately no, it's about to get worse even wetter than the past few weeks is very possible for next week. Turns very wet from Monday with no shortage of rainfall all through next week and into next weekend and possibly beyond.

For Dublin that is a very wet GFS ensemble graph particularly from 2nd April to 10th April with a possible drying trend into the far depths of FI around the 14th of April. Expect places further west than this to trend even wetter. Many parts of the country could easily achieve 100mm of rainfall or more over the next 2 weeks.

This will spell a disaster for farming particularly tillage farmers trying to get crops into saturated ground. This will equate to food costs rising down the line. T

When the waves of warm air starts arriving in the second week of april we could get alot of wind or even a storm..if we are in between the cold air to the north west and warm air coming up from the south..then after that it might become abit more like spring or even summer

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,831 ✭✭✭adocholiday

I'll take it at this stage if it stops the rain. Just having a look at the GFS 06z that just finished its run. It's showing the conveyor belt still going up to the weekend of the 12th, with a deep low sitting over Iceland pulling low pressure up towards us and the high pressure staying well south. It shows pressure building in the Atlantic after that and ends with high pressure sitting right over us on the Tuesday but it seems on each run that higher pressure just keeps getting pushed out. The signals are consistently there though for things to begin settling down.

The warm air is still arriving near mid april…warm from wednesday thursday and maybe friday….after that for next weekend we could get even warmer summer weather or straight back to winter..with cold coming down from the north and warm summer weather coming up from the south…it could go either way…more chance of better weather anyway after next weekend

Has it gotten so bad that the prospect of slightly warmer rain is now FI, even at 3 days out?! 😲

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,453 ✭✭✭squonk

ME mentioned high pressure next week or 10 days out at a government thing today according to the news. I’d have thought that would have been making headlines here if it was true?

The models are surprise surprise wobbling big time on high pressure any time soon. After a brief warm push of air later this week cooler and more unsettled weather looks back in business from Sunday and into next week with no real end in sight to the unsettled conditions perhaps even with cold rain and showers.

Even looking at the much maligned CFS about once a month its been pretty much on point with this poor weather. It shows mostly cool and unsettled for most of April and May with no prolonged dry spell but that's not really a surprise because bar 1 or 2 days most of the past 100 have been the same so there's a 90 percent chance that any day in the next 60 will either be wet or showery.

Farmers are depressed enough without having to read your groundless claptrap ,there is no need to make the outlook so depressing

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,140 ✭✭✭highdef

An experienced poster takes a look back at the long range predictions of one of the long range models that specialises in just that. He then notes that said model has been pretty accurate over that time and that the same model is predicting much the same for the rest of this month and next month.

This is all factual stuff. This is a science and fact based forum. Some people don't like warmth and/or lots of sunshine; it can make them depressed or irritable. Different people are affected differently by different sorts of weather. You are complaining about certain people with certain job roles being upset by a poster who is merely reading a weather model and giving everyone here a very high level forecast (which could be completely wrong, may I add) of that forecast in a forum created especially for that purpose.

The correct response would be to leave emotions aside and hit the thank button for said poster.

Believe it or not, there is actually a forum specifically for farmers to discuss the weather so feel free to discuss further there however from observing, I have noticed they tend to stick to how the weather affects their business. I don't see very much talk about their emotions or mental states but then again there are other forums in Boards that also specialise in such. The link is below.

Boards is such a wonderful resource, I have to say.

GFS and ECM both showing that high pressure tracking further south and into France, but starting to break down almost as soon as it reaches our shores now next Thursday and it's gone by Saturday. Earlier runs had it right over us and sticking around for a while but seems they're backing off that now. No major areas of low pressure on the horizon but nothing really settled either. Drier in the East and South East and temperatures hovering around 10-12 degrees. Maybe it's just recency bias but I can't remember ever knowing a time where it has just been so consistently miserable, and no real end in sight to it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,831 ✭✭✭adocholiday

GFS gone back to a high pressure scenario for next weekend and beyond. It's still very uncertain there are a lot of variables and it's far out in FI but let's hope this pattern continues

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,879 ✭✭✭pauldry

Met Eireann mentioning High Pressure now so we will perhaps get about a week of dry. It all depends on position of High. Some runs want it over us others bring it to our South. Will probably reach our shores next week before slipping away West to Greenland after 4 or 5 days.....like we want in Winter!!!

However hopefully it will break the current rain plume to a more haphazard version to allow some drying at least.
