Could be more competitive than in recent years given the new format for 2025. Top three in 1A and 1B will qualify for the new 1A division for 2025 along with the 4th placed team with the better record.

I think it will be seen as a disadvantage to miss out given the much lower quality of matches that will be in the new division 1B.

  • Registered Users Posts: 37,773 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

It's quite possible that it will be the 4th placed team in 1B with the better record given Westmeath and lesser extent Antrim are in that group while the only so called weaker team in 1A is Offaly

Even though the league is more or less meaningless you still want to be competing at the highest level and not watch attendances dwindle playing the Joe McDonagh teams each week (no disrespect meant)

How many years will the new placings be set for?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,686 ✭✭✭Grats

The two fourth placed teams play off for the final position in the top group for 2025.

That was originally announced but the master fixtures sets out:

Division 1a in 2025 will consist of

    • Top 3 placed teams in Division 1a and Division 1b (6)

    • The 4th placed team from Div 1a or Division 1b with the best record (1)

    • If both teams in 4

th place have the same number of league points, the tie is to be

determined by (i) Scoring Difference (ii) Highest Total Score for (iii) Most Goals for

(iv) Least Goals against (v) A playoff

  • Registered Users Posts: 461 ✭✭C4000

It will be 2 promoted and 2 relegated every year thereafter........or until they decide to change the format again

  • Registered Users Posts: 37,773 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

1B this year will have a big advantage with 2 so called lesser teams in it while 1A only has Offaly

    1A 2025 could be

Cork, Clare, Waterford or Wexford, Limerick Galway, Tipperary, Dublin or Waterford/Wexford (4th placed teams)

Leaving 1B having one or 2 big names

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,377 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Until they decide 1B is too predictable and small teams get nowhere taking beatings and then will change back until they decide smaller teams need to play bigger teams in proper competitive games and switch it back until they decide 1B is too predictable and small teams get nowhere taking beatings and then will change back until they decide smaller teams need to play bigger teams in proper competitive games and switch it back.

The current Division 1 format had to change. The top 9 were insulated from any real jeopardy. The expectation is that the 2 teams from the top 9 that are in Division 1B will have a quick return to 1A.

Division 1B will consist of 4 MacCarthy Cup counties and 3 McDonagh Cup counties. McDonagh counties need some tougher games against higher level opposition. The Division 1B for 8 to 14 will provide that opportunity.

Think we'll see a Clare or Wexford win this year. Teams like Clare and Galway need a trophy

The new format for next year will be intresting as I do think you'd want to be playing top teams each week thus the "big" teams will be fighting for Top 3. 4th is a gamble

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,377 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Cork are another team that could really do with any kind of trophy to bring the team on.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,546 ✭✭✭billyhead

Clare will be bubble wrapping O'Donnell and Kelly until the championship from what I was told. I fancy Cork for the league. They need silverware badly.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,377 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Kelly is out injured for the whole league. That's well known.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭evolvingtipperary101

O'Donnell just got back from a skiing trip. Some bubble wrap.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,948 ✭✭✭Billy Ocean

Not expecting Limerick to go hard for the league, did them no favours for Munster last year, I'd say they'll do enough to secure a place in the new 1A for 2025 and will be satisfied with that.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,323 ✭✭✭Seadin

I think Cork could be the team to watch this year. I feel they may not be far away at all.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,377 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,339 ✭✭✭✭callaway92

Yeh I get the optimism for Cork.

Not getting out of Munster last year might make things look worse than they were.

But they comfortably beat Waterford...Drew with Tipp in a match that could've went either way...Lost by a point to Clare and Limerick. No shame in either of those losses, especially by a point.

They should be looking positively at the year ahead; whereas Waterford and Tipp's goals will be a lot lesser. I just don't see it happening for Clare this year - They need an awful freshening up.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,377 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

If Cork had Limerick any other day than a do or die final game in a packed PnG they would have beat us.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,546 ✭✭✭billyhead

Cork play a lovely style of hurling (skillful and fast) so a lot of neutrals would probably like to see them be successful.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,948 ✭✭✭Billy Ocean

Maybe they didn't but definitely was a change in approach from the leagues of 2021&22, as I said we didn't see the best of Limerick in Munster last year either.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,377 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

The only change was they won. The make up of the teams was the same. Look at Lynch's acceptance "speech" to see how little they cared.

I don't think that was why Munster didn't go well.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,948 ✭✭✭Billy Ocean

I'd disagree in the 22 league they were 14 points down against Cork at half time for example, I just checked they had 8 regulars playing but even with that much experimenting that's a flase sense of things. The reason his speech was low key was it was the league, no matter who wins this year's league I'd imagine it will the same, just a step on the road to championship 2 weeks later.

Besides Lynch not there why do think Limerick were below their usual standards in Munster last year?

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,377 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Besides Lynch I think you had things like Hegarty against Waterford. You had Clare who finally turned the tight margin their way and Tipp who we never beat in Thurles.

Everyone targets Limerick now and all study and try work out how to beat Limerick. No surprise teams will start to figure us out.

Everyone went half arssed for last year's league it's just Limericks half ars is better than everyone elses.

  • Registered Users Posts: 438 ✭✭letsseehere14

Maybe going off todays showing by Westmeath, is one unforseen (by the average punter at least) impacts of the change to the structure next year the fact that Westmeath, Antrim and Offaly know they are 99% sure of ending up in the 2nd division. And as such will use the league as prep for Championship rather than being concerned about mounting a defense against relegation?

We could see some unmerciful beatings this year as the future of those 3 is already determined and the stronger counties worry about points difference that can be gained against them to avoid 4th place in 1B and trying to avoid 5th in 1A particularly.

Galway beat Westmeath by 31 points today. Nearly as much as Offaly lost to Tipp last year in Championship.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,377 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

The big teams are not gonna slip up this year. Not until top 3 is secure at least.

The Galway/Westmeath side of the draw will be pretty boring I reckon.

  • Registered Users Posts: 438 ✭✭letsseehere14

Just as an aside, since its league adjacent and I was bored . I looked at what a Premier League of hurlings top 9 would look like. I took the last 38 games each team played against the other top 9 team. I have seen this done before but those tables included the likes of Westmeath and Carlow games which really wasnt fair to the Munster teams who rarely play them and it skewed the points total towards Leinster.

Limerick, Cork, Clare, Tipp, Waterford, Kilkenny, Galway, Wexford and Dublin only. For most teams I had to go back as far as 2015/16 for 38 top games. For Wexford, all the way back to 2011 and only to 2017 for Limerick.

One addendum I would add is that the likes of Galways and Kilkennys points total is still skewed upwards as they played Dublin and Wexford much more often than anyone else. 12 and 13 times respectively, and im sorry but even though Waterfords total is poor, Dublin and Wexford do not pose the same level of competition as Waterford do and they also get to play eachother nearly yearly where as Waterford are in Munster.

Surprisingly, Kilkennys total is so low given that they competed in 4 All Ireland Finals in that period (2016 to 2023) and have won the last 4 Leinster titles in a row. This perhaps points to the easier path they get through winning Leinster where they can afford to lose or draw games in the RR and then grab a win in a Leinster final or AISF.

In reality, Galway, Clare, Tipp, Kilkenny and Cork are all much of a muchness.

Wexfords record is abysmal, even against Dublin who they played 8 times through the 38 games, only beating them once. In fact only for their record against Kilkenny, 4 of their 7 wins was against them, they would be so far adrift at the bottom its not funny.

    Limerick miles ahead!!! :)

Interesting to see....did you include league games or championship only?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭evolvingtipperary101

The dynamic of a long yearly league is completely different to a short league, never mind different knockout games in different championship years. I see what your doing but it's different years/players/personnel/managements over those years.
