    Warioware Twisted

This is pretty much Nintendo at their very best and for me the best of the Warioware series. The game cartridge includes a gyro sensor and despite this simple input device, the developer comes up with myriad inventive uses for it. I would well believe that the developers had an absolute blast developing this game because the sense of fun permeates throughout. At times the package feels more like a toy than a game. You are rewarded with gadgets, toys and trinkets to play with through a gacha machine and while most are pretty basic, there's so many and it's a blast to just mess around with them.

This game is a real meeting of Nintendo as a game developer and Nintendo as the toy maker. It's like getting a big box of hand me down toys from a relative and manages to capture the joy of rummaging through and constantly finding weird and cool stuff. Fantastic stuff.

Out of curiosity - when all of these retro games were out new were you playing them then too? Or playing older games ?

    1. Red Dead Redemption (Xbox) - finished it and the undead nightmare mode. Hadn't played it since it originally came out years ago, it's excellent still. Even if the graphics are ropey and the controls could do with improving.
    2. Red Dead Redemption 2 (Xbox) - possibly my favourite game of all time. Such a good game, spent a good chunk of time avoiding the story just to explore and go achievement grinding.
    3. Escape Academy (Xbox) - found this on gamepass, it was very satisfying when you solved the puzzle on own. Made me consider going to an escape room actually (haven't yet though).
    4. Harold Halibut (Xbox) - I don't know why I started this. I don't know why I finished it. The gameplay is boring, the story is odd and it's so slow.
    5. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (Xbox) - I think I played a bit of this on Stadia of all things years ago. I don't really like Star Wars movies, but some of the Star Wars games are excellent. This was great fun.
    6. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor (Xbox) - I played this immediately after fallen order. I was very pleased that they didn't do they annoying thing loads of sequels do by removing a bunch of the powers you had from earlier games. Cal's character in this has all of the things learned from the first game, I appreciated this. I also much preferred the sequel to the original.
    7. Super Mario Brothers 3 (SNES) - Not sure of the exact order from here on as these were on steam deck so I don't have dates, they slot in amongst the various xbox games. Finally finished mario brothers 3. I think it's my favourite Mario game.
    8. Super Mario World (SNES) - Also finished this, but was a right slog at the end. Put me off playing another Mario game for a bit.
    9. Tony Hawk's Underground (PS2) - I played a bunch of the Tony Hawk's games, but this is the only 1 I actually went to the bother of finishing. I didn't realise how much of my musical taste came from Tony Hawk's games, such a pity the quality tailed off with this series.
    10. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (Xbox) - Finished this in a much quicker time than expected. I know that COD games are all about the multi-player but the campaign was frustratingly short. Good game though, but I'd be annoyed if I paid full price for the campaign alone (I don't have the time or interest to devote to online gaming). Game only cost me a tenner though, so not all bad.
    11. Gris (Xbox) - Just finished this, was happy it ended when it did. A beautiful looking (and sounding) game with a decent amount of puzzle in it. But it was just starting to get tedious when it ended, so kudos to the designers for not dragging it out.
    12. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Xbox) - it's a COD game, you know what you're getting. The story is more or less a direct continuation from MW1, but I feel there is probably a larger mythology around the game that I don't know. They introduced some new level types in this game, some were fun (directing people using cctv system) but others were tedious (they have stealth levels where you need to collect items to build weapons or booby traps and stuff). Not a bad game, but if you are paying full price the single player alone it's not worth it (I paid €20 in CEX so not bad).
    13. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Xbox) - finished the trilogy. Worst of the 3 games. Shorter campaign, clunky mechanics in part. Story a bit all over the shop too. I assume (I didn't play) that they focus all of their efforts into multi player modes and stuff. Pity.
    14. Battlefield 1 (Xbox) - I tried playing the Mafia game, mechanics were too annoying so deleted it. Played a bit of Crash Bandicoot, also got annoyed so deleted it. Decided to keep rolling with the FPS vibe, so played Battlefield 1. I played it years ago, but it's a fab game. The WW1 setting is quite different, and I enjoyed the use of slower, bolt action guns rather than modern automatic rifles. The campaign isn't actually 1 campaign, but it's a series of shorter stories. Some of these are better than others (there's a story involving flight which isn't as good) but all in all it was very enjoyable.
Maquette (Xbox) - A really interesting puzzle game. The mechanic used has a model of the arena or area you are in in the middle which you can manipulate, so it lets you take small things from the area, put them into the model and they become big and vice versa. It's done quite well. Apart from one or two puzzles, most are satisfying without being annoyingly difficult to the point where you need online help (there was 1 specific puzzle I had to go online for, but it turned out that the puzzle was glitching and I had to restart the level). There's a story around the game about a couple looking back at their relationship which is fine, I guess. It doesn't add or detract from the game. But if you like puzzle games it's worth a shout.
    15. Portal (PC) - I was looking at my Steam Deck the other day and realised I had finished this earlier this year. A classic puzzle game. I started playing Portal 2 afterwards but never got into it. Should I go back to it?
    16. Battlefield Hardline (Xbox) - This is a battlefield game, but it's set in Miami and you're a cop. So you can play a chunk of the game like an actual cop and arrest people and stuff, but it's a Battlefield game so you can also go in guns blazing and shoot everybody. It's not a great game. The story is fine, but I got bored of it. And the gameplay is clunky.
    17. Battlefield V (Xbox) - A continuation of the vibes from Battlefield 1, but set in WW2. They do the same thing as Battlefield 1 where it's mini stories rather than 1 campaign and it's waaayy too short a single player game. Gameplay is decent. I was going to look at the newest Battlefield game (2042) but realised it's multiplayer only, so that's a pass from me. Are there any decent FPS games that have a long and satisfying campaign?
    18. Unpacking (Xbox) - I needed a game to check off a bunch of achievements for rewards so grabbed this. Oddly satrisfying game. It's simple in structure, just unpack your belongings in a series of houses as your unseen character gets older. It's just point and click. But through the stuff being unpacked and the locations/etc it tells a rather satisfying story. Got the 1,000 achievement points here.
    19. Peglin (PC) - Not sure if you can consider this game as completed. It's a Peggle type game with deck building elements. It's not even a complete game, it's early access in Steam. I don't know if I enjoyed it, but I played a bunch of it over the last little bit.
    20. Stray (PC) - I've been playing this game for ages, but always in short little spurts. Finally finished it the other night. The mechanics of playing as a cat are handled really well and it largely performed really well on my steam deck. The story is mad but entertaining, and it doesn't hold hands too much in getting you through the levels. Would I want to play again or play a sequel? Probably not. But I enjoyed this while I played it.
    21. Ori and the Blind Forest (PC) - I played this a few years ago when it was on gamepass, but I picked it up for my steamdeck and it's perfect on that. I forgot how beautiful the game is and how good the music is too. I also forgot how frustrating some of the areas can be - I died 659 times to complete it (but I got there).

Trying to decide if I go back and do every last bit of Blind Forest to 100% it, or if I will start on the sequel which I never played fully on Xbox… I'm also tipping away at McPixel 3 on Xbox to get the achivements on the daily. I thought I'd just use it as a handy way to grab achievements, but it's really good fun to sit down and play for like 20 minutes at a go.

A healthy mix of both. Was always into games, got into them with a C64 so started in 8-bit era. Always wanted a NES but they weren't common in Ireland and very expensive. Got into retro games in the PS1 era as the old 8 bit and 16 bit style of games disappeared and while the new stuff was good the old school 2D games were still fun and viable. And then I discovered emulation around 1998, when my only system was a Megadrive and a very out of date PC so that became what I played for a while until I got a PS1.

A clever management sim with an arpg. Kinda like animal crossing with a dark theme. The last boss was tough though, cute graphics. Glad I got to play it after hearing so much about it.

    22. Ori and the Will of the Wisps (PC) - I played the sequel. It's also very, very, very good. The game mecahnics are changed from the previous game which in some aspects are good (you don't just have sequential improvements over time, but you have a shard system where you can choose which improvements to have) but it can be a little confusing with all of the choice. The game is as beautiful as the first and the level design is fantastic. The boss battles were a pain in the hole though, unnecessarily difficult in places. Oh and a fab soundtrack to boot. Definitely worth playing on any device if you haven't already.
    23. McPixel 3 (Xbox) - I picked this up because I wanted to be able to trigger daily xbox achievements for rewards. But it turns out that this is a really fun game. It's a bunch of mini levels that has absurd humour and a really jarring pixel art style. It's very silly and dumb but it's funny. I enjoyed playing for like 15/20 minutes a night, got a bunch of achivements and then would come back to it. 100% and all achivements completed last night. If you want a bit of fun, definitely take a peek.

A short enough DLC but , but gripping love the further melding of Control and Alan wake. It takes place mainly within the facility so think Control setting Alan wake gameplay. Made me hyped for Control 2.

    Batman: Return of the Joker

This was a bit of a white whale for me. I got to the final boss as a kid on my friends copy but could never beat him.

The more well known return of the joker game is the excellent NES game (and it's god awful Megadrive port) but this Gameboy game is very different. It feels and plays like a sequel to the original NES game. Batman's movement feels the same and videogaming's best wall jump carries over. A grappling hook has been added to Batman's repertoire. The game feels great to play.

Being a Sunsoft 8bit game, it's a technical tour de force. The opening stage has a gorgeous shimmering water effect and stage 3 has impressive parallax. The sprites are big and well animated. However the zoomed in nature of the graphics does mean there's a few leap of faith moments if you don't know the levels. The soundtrack is superb, it's some early work by the same composer as the shovel knight soundtrack.

The game is rather short, with only 4 stages, one of which is extremely short. It makes up for it in difficulty. It's a fair game but it's quite punishing. And don't get me started on the final boss, there was a good reason I never finished it back in the day.

Overall it's a pretty great action platformer that looks, sounds and plays great and only let down by being a bit too short.

    Batman

This was a launch window title for the original gameboy and came out to coincide with the realease of the 1989 Batman movie. Launch window license tie-in? Sounds terrible. But this defies expectations and is one of the best games of the Gameboy launch window.

Batman was created again by Sunsoft who were one of the best 8-bit game developers of the time. While Batman certainly isn't impressive graphically, Sunsoft made a very playable game. This is the Batman game where Batman uses a gun for some reason but if you can ignore that then you have a fun little action platformer. It looks more like Super Mario Land with the tiny player and enemy sprites. Batman controls really well. Scattered throughout the stages are blocks that can be used as platforms or can be destroyed and its this mechanic that sets the game apart from other action platformers. Some blocks contain powerups, addition weapons, health, shields or most importantly an item that can increase the amount of projectiles you can have on screen (there's also a power down item you should avoid). The music is excellent, as usual for a Sunsoft game. The game breaks up the action with a scrolling shooter section in the batwing at the half way mark.

Sunsoft really made the most of the low power of the Gameboy and tiny ROM cart they had to work with and crafted a really fun action game even if it's not much to look at. It's short but quite challenging. Be warned, this one also has another infuriating fight with the Joker at the end.

    Echo Night: Beyond

This is another example of a badly reviewing pre Demon's Souls From Software game that is really good.

In Echo Night Beyond you wake in a crashed space shuttle that has crash landed into a lunar space station. The ship and station seem completely devoid of human life. However there are plenty of ghosts. Most just wander lost in it's hallways but there's also a strange fog in many areas of the station that turns ghosts malevolent. It's up to you to uncover the secrets of this strange lunar base and it's ghosts.

Echo Night Beyond takes place entirely in the first person and uses an enhanced version of the King's Field 4 engine. The game makes great use of this perspective. You are confined to a lunar space suit which restricts your vision. All you can hear when there's no ghosts around is your own heart beat and breathing. The only heads up display is your heartrate and you have a flashlight.

There's no combat, all you can do is run away from ghosts. If you stay in their presence too long your heart rate will shoot up and your tunnel vision will increase until you die of cardiac arrest. Instead you have to use your wits to solve puzzles to deal with these ghosts. There are monitoring stations around the station that allow you to control the surveillance camera's which can pick up ghosts far better than the human eye.

The game is very much an adventure game. You move through the station, collecting items and solving puzzles to open up new areas. The friendlier ghosts you can talk to and they will help you if you bring them an item that brings them peace to pass on. If you manage to bring peace to all the ghosts you will get the true ending.

Echo Night Beyond is a unique and effective horror experience. It's genuinely terrifying and unsettling at points. The loneliness of the station and lunar surface set a mood of profound desolation. The stories of the ghosts passing on can be quite emotional and I found the story satisfying even if Silent Hill 2 won't be getting too worried. The game looks incredible as well with some excellent stencil shadows, lighting and reflective surface effects that you could mistake for ray tracing.

It's not all good though. My one big complaint is that as an adventure game there's a lot of hunting for small items in the environment you may have missed. While the start of the game tends to lock you into smaller areas and won't let you leave until all puzzles are solved, the last half of the game has you explore the entire station. Missing an item can lead to a tedious item hunt as you slowly walk through the station. The voice acting isn't great either.

Not much that different from the first only this time you can control other COs from different nations. The last mission was quite tough I cheesed it with eagle and a lone bomber.
Good games though highly enjoyed them.

On chapter 11 of Like a dragon really is picking up now and started astro bot, also have metaphor refantazio to play but might play some lighter games rather than diving again into a meaty RPG.

    1. Red Dead Redemption (Xbox) - finished it and the undead nightmare mode. Hadn't played it since it originally came out years ago, it's excellent still. Even if the graphics are ropey and the controls could do with improving.
Red Dead Redemption 2 (Xbox) - possibly my favourite game of all time. Such a good game, spent a good chunk of time avoiding the story just to explore and go achievement grinding.
    2. Escape Academy (Xbox) - found this on gamepass, it was very satisfying when you solved the puzzle on own. Made me consider going to an escape room actually (haven't yet though).
    3. Harold Halibut (Xbox) - I don't know why I started this. I don't know why I finished it. The gameplay is boring, the story is odd and it's so slow.
    4. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (Xbox) - I think I played a bit of this on Stadia of all things years ago. I don't really like Star Wars movies, but some of the Star Wars games are excellent. This was great fun.
    6. Super Mario Brothers 3 (SNES) - Not sure of the exact order from here on as these were on steam deck so I don't have dates, they slot in amongst the various xbox games. Finally finished mario brothers 3. I think it's my favourite Mario game.
    7. Super Mario World (SNES) - Also finished this, but was a right slog at the end. Put me off playing another Mario game for a bit.
    8. Tony Hawk's Underground (PS2) - I played a bunch of the Tony Hawk's games, but this is the only 1 I actually went to the bother of finishing. I didn't realise how much of my musical taste came from Tony Hawk's games, such a pity the quality tailed off with this series.
    10. Gris (Xbox) - Just finished this, was happy it ended when it did. A beautiful looking (and sounding) game with a decent amount of puzzle in it. But it was just starting to get tedious when it ended, so kudos to the designers for not dragging it out.
    12. Pity.
Battlefield Hardline (Xbox) - This is a battlefield game, but it's set in Miami and you're a cop. So you can play a chunk of the game like an actual cop and arrest people and stuff, but it's a Battlefield game so you can also go in guns blazing and shoot everybody. It's not a great game. The story is fine, but I got bored of it. And the gameplay is clunky.
    18. Peglin (PC) - Not sure if you can consider this game as completed. It's a Peggle type game with deck building elements. It's not even a complete game, it's early access in Steam. I don't know if I enjoyed it, but I played a bunch of it over the last little bit.
    23. Call of Duty Black Ops 6 (Xbox) - free on gamepass, so gave this a bash. Way better story than the modern warefare games (I only play campaign, no interest in online/multiplayer). I feel like I played one of the first black ops games on xbox 360 years ago, I think I might have to go back and play these through.

    GAME || F.E.A.R.

    PLATFORM || PC

This game was way ahead of its time in 2005. The physics engine is fantastic, the gunplay is so satisfying — genuinely fun FPS with a good bit of subtle horror. Hadn't played it in about 14 years myself so this was a fun treat to go back to. Thoroughly enjoyed my time.

    Yakuza Like a Dragon

I am a sucker for a good RPG and although at times I find the Yakuza universe a bit samey, I adored this. Loved the switch up of the combat system. Haven't played all of the Yakuza universe I have finished 0,1,2 and Judgement so I was a bit lost with some references. It might be blasphemy to skip 3,4,5 and 6 but I have too many things to play.

Call of duty Black ops 6

Best campaign I have played in years for COD, more a spy thriller than shoot enemies in hallways. There is a still a bit of that but there is some great standout missions. My personal favorite would be high rollers.

    Ninja Gaiden Shadow

The Gameboy Ninja Gaiden game that actually isn't really Ninja Gaiden. This game is more a follow up to the NES classic Shadow of the Ninja/Blue Shadow, which was itself a superior Ninja Gaiden clone. It was developed by the same team at Natsume as well. Tecmo slapped the Ninja Gaiden label on it. To be fair they would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for this and Shadow of the Ninja using the same grappling hook mechanic.

Natsume were on top of their game during this era and churned out another classic platforming action game. Controls are smooth, it's a very technically impressive Gameboy game and the music is incredible. Level design is varied and full of surprises and there's some really well executed boss battles. I've a few complaints, it's a little short at 5 stages and a bit easy. Also the classic Ninja Gaiden cutscenes are missing but that might be a bit too much to ask for a Gameboy game. Definitely one to check out if you get a chance.

For handheld games, are you playing on the original console, or via emulation? What device if emulating?

    16. Portal (PC) - I was looking at my Steam Deck the other day and realised I had finished this earlier this year. A classic puzzle game. I started playing Portal 2 afterwards but never got into it. Should I go back to it?
    20. Peglin (PC) - Not sure if you can consider this game as completed. It's a Peggle type game with deck building elements. It's not even a complete game, it's early access in Steam. I don't know if I enjoyed it, but I played a bunch of it over the last little bit.
    26. Call of Duty Black Ops (PC) - after playing the latest game, went and bought the original on PC for a couple of euro. Then realised I bought the Russian version, so had to find a download to fix that. But it's great fun once fixed. For a game as old as it is, it largely holds up quite well as an FPS. The story is much longer than any of the recent COD games and it's quite a good story too. The gameplay is decent, although some elements are clunky (I especially noticed issues where other allied NPCs would get in your way or block you in spots). Guess what games I'll be playing next? Oh also - I bought this on PC, but could not get into keyboard & mouse, so just connected my xbox controller and was much better for me. The rest of the series I'm going to play on Xbox now.

If you can't get into keyboard and mouse, try lowering your mouse speed way less than you think. I used to play with my mouse way too high but a friend who is a high ranking CS player told me to have as slow a mouse as possible and it's helped enormously. Aiming is so much easier. Seems counter intuitive but a slower mouse speed is better.

I cannot talk for that guy but for me it was the keyboard side I couldn't get into back in the day playing Battlefield 4. I used to just play on my Xbox controller. I am so used to playing with controllers it just felt better. I know there is a learning curve but I just couldn't be assed learning to play with a keyboard.

Ya, it was the keyboard. I toy with the idea of getting a proper gaming pc at some point (I have a laptop at the moment), if I do I'd properly get into lay keyboard and mouse.

Just wrapping DQ and loved every second of it. Beyond gorgeous and walked the line perfectly between old and new with its polish. Final boss was surprisingly straightforward given the amount of curveballs the game likes to throw, but there's no harm in a victory lap boss every now and then.

This year I’ve beaten the main quests in AC Valhalla, AC Odyssey and Dragon’s Dogma 2. I’ve also beaten the Shadow of the Erdtree dlc for Elden Ring. Started playing Witcher 3 on PS5 a few days ago and I’m loving it so far.

    Shattered Space

What a DLC as good if not better than Far Harbour. The side mission were very good. The new area to explore is vast and without any duplicates which people complained about in the main game. Over all a very good game.

Is it a good kid's game? No, it's terrible. Crappy mechanics, doesn't have the love and care that the Bluey show has. But I got my achievements so that's all that matters.
