Good news, I just cancelled Virgin so I'll order Sky broadband at the end of the month.

What ever happened to the deal between Virgin & Vodafone, that was announced a good while back but nothing ever came of it.

Vodafone announced it and nothing ever came of it lol.

Only have Virgin here in my place so Sky coming in will be interesting.

Sky rep said he'll be able to book new broadband setups using the V network on 28/10 for those interested.

Will be interested to see if pricing for Virgin is higher than their standard fibre offerings and if so how much. Delighted with the news as I'm pretty much virgin media only so the ability to move around and get new customer deals is much needed.

Didn't Virgin Media and Vodafone announce same thing quite some time ago? Whatever happened to that?

The Voda thing was bizarre as absolutely nothing happened after the big press release

Like the sky mobile announcement 18 months ago and still no sky mobile.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 431 ✭✭Manc-Red_

Hope it’s not the same case because all we have here is Virgin and the pricing is insane

presumably (as was stated about the Vodafone deal) this only covers premises connected directly to Virgin's fibre network, not anyone still on co-ax? VM have said everyone will be on fibre by 2025.

That's a shame. Why could they not route the co ax traffic also though?

    Anyone move to sky yet?

I was told similar. They have organised a call back for me next week. I have 250mb with virgin but keep getting terrible offers. Be good to be able to change between the two.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 999 ✭✭✭gabbo is coming

Interesting to see if switching can happen for both fibre and coax customers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,135 ✭✭✭dam099

Most ISPs use the same Router regardless of the wholesale network you are on (or indeed even between xDSL and FTTH connections).

The Vodafone router does not support co-ax and it’s likely not worth their while procuring a new router type for the virgin coax network, training staff etc for what might be a small enough number of customers over a limited timeframe (as Virgin connections will likely eventually all be Ftth anyway which fits their model better).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 795 ✭✭✭breeno

Any chance the standard Sky router has coax connection? Long shot but I really want some options other than Virgin!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 999 ✭✭✭gabbo is coming

Think he meant sky not vodafone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,042 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Good to see the deal is available on Sky. I'll be switching when I am out of contract with Virgin. I'm on Coax and get offered the deals when on the Sky Website.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 318 ✭✭Bubonic

Is this when you click the check deals button? Mine still says I have to call in. Are the deals the same price as other sky packages?

Yeah I put in the Eircode and it comes back with the deals. 1GB Boradband and 500mb available.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,899 ✭✭✭grimm2005

On Virgin coax myself and only seeing legacy 90MB offer with sky unfortunately, hoping it'll be available when my contract is up early next year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,042 ✭✭✭Gusser09

I'd be calling them. Some bugs in their system it seems. I'm on coax and can order everything. Now whether they would go ahead and install it is a different matter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 318 ✭✭Bubonic

Are you getting the same €35 and €45 pricing they normally have?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 795 ✭✭✭breeno

Still only seeing the basic 100mb at my location and not the 1gb Virgin speed.

Feels like I'm going to be stuck with just Virgin forever.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71,186 ✭✭✭✭L1011

The fictional "70mbit" VDSL for me - it would be more like 20 - due to being coax. I would assume Virgin-only coax areas (no urban Eir, no SIRO) there's bog all reason for Virgin to prioritise fibre rollout either.

This is not the same premises I'm waiting on NBI obviously!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,042 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Yeah seeing those deals. Seeing all deals. Will attach a ss soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,042 ✭✭✭Gusser09

When I put in my Eircode I get the option to purchase this.

I am coax to the home.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 999 ✭✭✭gabbo is coming

I get the option to purchase 7mb on coax

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71,186 ✭✭✭✭L1011

That's on the eir copper network, not via Virgin

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 664 ✭✭✭babelfish1990

What makes you convinced that Sky are using VM Coax to deliver this? It is much more likely that Sky are re-selling over Eir's FTTH. The majority of VM customers are on legacy coax, and there is no indication that VM are able to deliver wholesale services to other operators on the coax network.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 999 ✭✭✭gabbo is coming

Yea, so I'm not being offered any sky deal on coax

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 664 ✭✭✭babelfish1990

Definitely not. Why would you want coax, if you can already get real fibre to the home? Copper coax has horrible latency, and severe uplink contention, as well as being susceptible to water ingress in current weather conditions. Much of the coax network is strung along Fascias in older areas, which also makes it more likely to be damaged when anyone in your area decides to replace or paint their fascias.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,042 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Because mate on the eir site i get up to 100mb when i put in my Eircode.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,042 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Any idea who is doing the install for Sky on the VM network? I know that VM do their own installs and Eir / Vodafone / Sky use Circet and KN.

I'll wait a while anyway before I switch and hopefully any teething problems are resolved by then.

Can still only get 100mb with Sky 😔

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 431 ✭✭Manc-Red_

Virgin available at home and Sky rep just called me to say they’re still not available in mine.

    Go figure

I haven't spoken to them yet but I suspect this is what will happen to me. I moved in two years ago and have been with Virgin the whole time, but websites like bonkers and so on say Virgin isn't available here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 431 ✭✭Manc-Red_

Obviously having teething problems but we’ll wait and see what happens.

    Hope it’s not a Voda-like issue again

I got the offer on the app and spoke to Sky about it. They got trained up 2-3 weeks ago for selling it but their system tells them they can’t sell it to me - offensive potentially. Turns out when I insisted that they delve further that it is restricted only to fibre and not legacy coax network. I can get 2gb from Virgin on that and guess they don’t have to give access. Thing is where I live in central Dublin, it is essentially the only high speed network. FTTH is but a long away dream and can see them ever putting it in.

Ah restricted only to fibre - fair enough & thanks.

My area has been installed with fibre and we’re waiting on it to be green lighted over the co-ax that is currently the source.

    Maybe next year

Sky coming around door to door in my area selling it over the Virgin infrastructure. I'll have to wait to be out of contract though. I'll be interested to see who is installing for them etc.

Ads on the Radio now in the Dublin area for Fibre only with Sky now available

Have Virgin Internet at the moment, checked with Sky but only getting the eir offering for my address (up to 100mb). Can those who've got the Virgin packages on sky comment on price? Is it the same as Virgin or cheaper? Seems from earlier posts that it's not just being offered to FTTH Virgin lines - is this Correct?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 431 ✭✭Manc-Red_

I rang Sky today to see what they’d say & they’ll only be installing within Dublin if the area has fibre active on Virgin.

For me I’m unlucky only having Virgin on the area or like 30mb max with Eircom/Voda.

We’ve had the fibre installed adjacent to ftth but unluckily still no joy with it being activated.

Mate of mine in the area next to us that is active got 1gb for 40 quid p/m apparently for a year. That’s half of what I pay for the same on Virgin.

I wonder if there’s a page to see when your area is activated?

I only got the option last week, prices below. The 1gb service is between 30-100mb/s upload.

500mbs is 60e after 12 months, 1gbs is 70e after 12 months so could do the switcheroo back to Virgin next year to get 35e or 45e (this years offers for new customers)

I finished with virgin nearly 3 weeks ago (63e, 250/25) and am very happy with my self-bought second hand Three 5G ZTE MC801a router (CEX @ 165e) and a 15e a month 'hero'simcard (now unavailable) for 400-500mbs/30-50mbs upload.

But those prices above are great

A thing isn't what it says it is.

A thing is what it does.

Do you know if you're in an area Virgin have upgraded to FTTH? Prices seem decent - if I was to upgrade my existing Virgin 360mb package to 1gb they want €80pm 😁 Twice what I'm paying for internet and home phone at the moment

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,021 ✭✭✭archfi

I'm in a new build and I get the option of 2gb from Virgin so I'd say so, Sky only offered the 100mb/s service up till end of last week here.

A thing isn't what it says it is.

A thing is what it does.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,323 ✭✭✭bennyx_o

Makes sense, Sky still only offering my 100mb/s

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,503 ✭✭✭thefinalstage

I'm in an area with just the 1gb service being offered so I assume coaxial cable.

I checked sky last week and it said 100mb fttc. Now I check it and it says they are unable to determine and to call the sales team. Anyone the same?

Broadband checker with your eircode might just be fucked but I have a small hope it being updated...
