So there has been not much publicity about this tournament in general due to its timing in not being ideal competing against a Rugby World Cup and the football season.

ODI cricket hasn't been to the forefront of cricket in recent times, so it could be a tough tournament to predict. Saying that however, the hosts have won this tournament in the previous 3 editions, so India will enter the tournament as warm favourites. They seem to have all the bases covered for home conditions. The holders England still have a strong team but you wonder about their bowlers in Indian conditions. Australia will be there or thereabouts. New Zealand may be a slightly ageing team now but still can do it on the day, while Pakistan look dangerous but lack a quality spinner. Sri Lanka were excellent in the recent Asian Cup until the final where they were embarrassed. Afghanistan have improved generally and should be good in Asian conditions, but are on a poor run of form. South Africa come into the tournament with a bit of confidence after two great wins against Australia but it would be a surprise to see them in the semi-finals. Bangladesh have had an excellent 4 years in the format and could get a couple of surprise wins. Finally, Netherlands were shock qualifiers for this competition and would be looking to grab a win or two.

Since each team will face other and have 9 group games each, it will take a while for the matches to actually matter. There will be a game every day from Thursday for the next 5 and a half weeks.

It’s a lot of cricket to decide the best four teams out of ten. In a way that’s good if weather is likely to be a factor. It would be better if they used the IPL system after the group stage, it’s a bigger advantage to finishing first. As it is first playing fourth in the semis isn’t that big of a deal.

It's crept up on me, I thought it was next week! The sport needs a good tournament, ODI is really fighting for its survival against the almost ubiquitous T20 franchises and the move among the top countries to preserve Test Cricket (mainly between the big 3). It's just over six weeks to the final, so it's a long enough tournament, and it will probably struggle to capture the imagination until the semis outside the participating countries, and as others have said there are other big sporting events going on at the moment.

I think it's India's to lose, home advantage, the best pool of players etc., but they tend to disappoint at these global tournaments. It's hard to see beyond England, and Australia, with Pakistan, and/or New Zealand being the most likely other semi-finalists. I'm sure there will be a few shocks along the way, it'll be interesting to see how the Netherlands get on.

Biggest cricket stadium in the world and hardly a soul in it.

England going well and look set for a big score but a few quick wickets would pull it back for NZ.

Butter just out, big wicket for NZ.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,056 ✭✭✭MFPM

Eng 188/5. Buttler just gone. Even enough match with England probably just ahead.

Poor crowd alright which given this game is between two teams who are potential winners of the World Cup, doesn't bode well for the rest of the tournament. The broadcasters seem to be piping in crowd noise judging from what I can hear on Sky..

England with an under par total you'd have to say.... 5.66 the required..

So under a run a ball required by NZ... if they get a good start they should win.. no need for crazy risk hitting... going aerial or pinching dodgy singles... sensible batting and they win...

Big last over by England.. 14 from it.. strange NZ leaving the expensive and wicketless Neesham to bowl the last over.. a head scratcher..

The first time ever in ODI cricket that 1-11 all got into double figures. Says a lot to me though that the pitch had no demons in it. Everyone was able to get in, so New Zealand bowled pretty well and never lost control throughout the 50 overs. England gave away a couple wickets too and I think that pitch is a 350+ score. New Zealand have a very strong middle order and if they play sensibly, they should win. England may need Mark Wood or Adil Rashid to bowl a special spell.

One thing to keep an eye on in the tournament with so many day night games is that it looks like pretty much every side will bowl first and chase when the dew comes down. Only 6 games are not day-nighters. I think back to a T20 World Cup in the UAE a couple of years ago in which every side looked to bat second as conditions got easier and easier. Hopefully this World Cup will have pitches that are little bit more diverse and are not just flat everywhere.

Pitiful crowd. Indian cricket fanatacism is pure one-eyed. They only care about their own nation and the IPL.

New Zealand will be happy with that, they dragged England back, their batsmen need to back up the good work of their bowlers now.

Poor first over from Woakes, just the start England didn’t need.

Curran wicket first delivery ! Poor delivery, bad shot but well taken by Jos Buttler.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,157 ✭✭✭VillaMad

All true of course. The 2011 World Cup I seem to remember had loads of games in empty stadiums. Sad to see in such a populous country.

It's mad thought that with that stadium being the second biggest stadium in the world apparently that even if you had 50,000-60,000 at it, it would still be half empty.

They mentioned on Talk Sport they were ticketing issues - apparently could not be purchased online, didn't go into any details but I am sure with a bit of Googling it will be clear.

Woakes all over the shop, he’s surely going to have to be taken out of the attack.

    Curran laser like accurate.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,809 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

England quicks, Wood and Woakes are bowling absolute dross here. Awful bowling. Wood concedes 17 from his first. Its not great batting it’s dreadful bowling.

for supposedly a cricket mad country the attendance is pathetic.

England are done here, screwed. 63/1 from 8

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,217 ✭✭✭Gillespy

England getting the run around. Ravindra was being wasted batting so low, looking great at number three.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,809 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

    NZ were crazy good…

but the English bowling had been a disgrace. Exceptionally dreadful…

If NZ just kept batting 50 overs it’s 390/400….

they’ve beaten England, loosing only 1 wicket and with 13.4 overs to spare…

    mad…. 9 wicket victory….

England : poor bowling, a heap of misfields and atrocious batting.

NZ : missing a heap of players. Strolled to victory.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,056 ✭✭✭MFPM

Didn't see that coming at all, NZ well able to beat England but that's some margin of victory. The tournament is set up that it's possible to lose games and still make the top 4 but England won't be happy with that performance at all particularly with the bat.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,217 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Big gap in class today. That said batting looked a lot easier under lights. Buttler was going to chase too. Hopefully that’s not going to be a trend this tournament.

England should be better for today. Rain ruined their warmup games so should improve. They don’t look like World Cup winners even allowing for that.

Always a laugh to hear Nasser the blocker telling people they need to adopt an attacking approach, bad defeat for England, but plenty of games to turn it around. Conway 152* and didn't win man of the match, Ravindra is a find, some partnership

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,217 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Although he was unlucky today, Will Young will want a score before Williamson comes back. Ravindra looks too good to be used as a lower middle order spin bowling allrounder.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,809 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

    Boundary Count :

    England - 27 from 50 overs

    NZ - 38 from 36.2 overs

I know England loosing wickets is a big factor but still…. Shît.

I seriously can’t get my head around the English tactics of short ball after short ball.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,217 ✭✭✭Gillespy

What can the Dutch do today? They’ve won the toss and put Pakistan in. Opening with a spinner and it almost worked.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,056 ✭✭✭MFPM

The Netherlands got off to a decent start taking three wickets, but Pakistan are consolidating now and building towards a decent total, 132/3 after 27. May not be a massive total unless they cut loose so it'll be interesting to see how the Dutch manage it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,056 ✭✭✭MFPM

Pakistan only scoring at under 6 an over, decent performance so far by the Dutch. 10 overs left.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,986 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

No idea what the Netherlands batting is like, do they have much hope of chasing down 287?

  • Registered Users Posts: 209 ✭✭Lionel Fusco

Very decent bowling performance from the Netherlands it gives them a real shout.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,217 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Surviving Afridi’s opening spell will be key. That’s going to be true for all teams playing Pakistan. Rest of their attack isn’t that great really but should be too strong you’d think.

Looked like at one stage Pakistan might have been kept to about 260 but got up to 287 in the end.

solid if conservative start from the Dutch. Just as I say that O’Dowd is late on a pull shot to Ali and is caught at long leg and then….almost 2 in 2 but Ackermann’s edge just drops inches short of the slip fielder…. Decent start but suddenly The Dutch are under it.
