Too late to post on here in relation to the late Shane McGowan. We've lost a couple of few world famous singers in the last few years with Delores O'Riordan, Christy Dignam, Sinead O'Connor and now Shanes passing all making international news headlines.

For those of a particular Gen X persuasion, these were a massive part of our formative years.

Another singer who is still popular and who was from an earlier generation and who thankfully is still with us is Christy Moore. He definitely falls in to the category of another iconic singer. Not as well known internationally probably, but an icon nonetheless. Good health Christy.

Dolores Keane. A fantastic voice. I could listen to her all day.

    A good thread.

With all the crap that's written online, saying how much someone is appreciated while they are alive is good.

How many people even celebrities don't truly realise how much others appreciate them and when a person is gone it's too late to tell them then.

    Dolly Parton

Altruistic, kind, with a wicked sense of humour and a phenomenal songwriter

She’s a beacon of light in the ever increasing gloom

Absolutely! Surprised she hasn't been mentioned before now.

I read someone in the music industry once said about her that if she had been born in Europe a hundred years earlier or whatever, she'd have been a famous composer in the same vein as Mozart, Bach etc. They said that she is just naturally gifted musically.

And she is a legend in terms of her altruism as you said also. And her modesty is unique in todays world, I think Trump wanted to giver her an award while he was in office and she declined it as her husband was unwell. When Biden was elected, he offered it to her again and she said no because she didn't want to appear biased. Classy lady.

She was in media last week with some in conservative circles in US sharing images of her at a concert dressed as she does and saying she was no sort of an example to women and should dress her age. I think there's few better examples to young women and should be able dress as she wishes.

I suppose she is such an easy target that she will always have her knockers regardless of what she does.

There's threads on here dedicated to this topic. Would rather not turn this in to another one of them.

George Hamilton. He's commentated on so many Irish iconic sporting events.

    Brian Kerr.

Especially on co-commentary, insightful and funny in equal measure.

Not for those of us who still blame him for us failing to qualify for euro '92. . . . we could have won the flucking thing.

Elon Musk, maybe we will never find another home if he leaves us

If he hurries up and leaves, maybe we won't need to find another home.

If there was ever a guy who'd get a 1/4 of a full shoulder shrug for his passing, it's Elon.

ive heard plenty of people say bad things about him, almost exclusively from him being the after-dinner speaker/guest at corporate event things. those things are are a bit of a joke to be fair though so i kinda dont blame him being a bit of a gobshite at them

Thoroughly agree, was hilarious this morning to boot in front of an audience in the bits I heard, the interview on the dos and don'ts at the office Christmas party was a classic.

I think there's a big difference between the likes of Kenny who's still outputting and Shane McGowan who's product was all behind him, great legacy but there wasn't going to be anything new.

RTE seem to be phasing George Hamilton out, only ever hear him on women's international matches these days, will Euro 2024 be his swansong.

Homer Simpson. Even though i dont watch it anymore, Homer was a figure that was there since i was a nipper.

If/when they ever kill him off, I'll have a lot of fond funny memories.

3 -1 up away to Poland twelve minutes to play and an expected win against Turkey to come - George announces we've all but qualified for Euro 92.

Commentators curse - Poland scored twice to draw. Ireland beat Turkey but finish a point behind england and had a greater goal difference- arguably our greatest ever team and not beyond reality we could have won the whole competition given Denmark actually did.

Eamon Dunphy. Divisive figure, I hated him when he was with the Sindo but his match analysis with Giles and Billy were always entertaining.

The only people who'll miss him are his fellow incels and white supremacists.

Better to read your pre-mortem requiem than post, I suppose.

73 now…. A lot of physical work in that job…. The travel, climbing up to and down from gantries / commentary positions.

always seemed like a nice guy and an excellent commentator too…. Btw he’s allowed the odd gaffe, seeing as Jimmy McGee was known for getting away with, erm one or two in his time.

that said considering he’s 73 the guy only looks 55….

Mickey Mouse is still around at about a century old, a lot of the Looney Tunes are from the 40s and 50s. Voice actors can always be replaced, probably more easily now with AI. As long as he's still making money they'll keep him on.
