I was waiting months for an appointment with my English NHS clinic for just annual checkup, bloods etc... it kept being cancelled so on a trip back to Ireland I rang my old gp, got an appointment next day, blood results back before I left again for England.

    Glad to pay the €50.

My wife worked in the NHS system and she's glad to be out of it. It's not all bad, there's a bit of a postcode lottery about it. Some patients will move house just to be in a better run NHS catchment, but overall the dependency ratio is really kicking in over there, and it will hit us in another decade or two.

Given that Coca-Cola Hellenic, possibly others, bottle for an all-Ireland market.. does that mean more could have the Ɍ logo or same barcode too?

The difference in used car price and quality is so bad we should pause VRT until our market is replenished

Significant savings to be made if you were to buy your loft insulation from B&Q in Newry.

The calculation below is what I worked out the comparative cost would be for my new build bungalow.

Excluding B&Q IRL, Irish based building providers are significantly more expensive.

Those figures mean nothing without context.

What % of bottles and cans are being brought to the machines.I believe less than half which means the majority of the country like me are not partaking.

Anyway, this is off topic and I'm sure there's a thread elsewhere for it.

The figure given before was 5m a day, in which case it has been over half for a number of months and is continuing to grow. You are not in the majority.

Hey,if I'm wrong on that I'll hold my hand up.

I know you're a good poster and are on the ball a lot.

It wont change my view or my habit with bottles and cans, they'll still go in the bin.Instead of the majority ill be in a large minority instead....which I'm also fine with.

I buy Coke multipacks, and they don't. I'm not sure about the individual ones or smaller multipacks.

You 'might' get the deposit back if you're prepared to spend the time storing and recycling 1000 cans and find a working machine to take them.

The word 'saved' in my post not only refers to the financial benefit of keeping that notional deposit money in your possession to spend on other things, but also the substantial saving in time and effort involved the getting that deposit back. That might be worth it if you're lucky enough to get DRS stock in NI, as then at least you're getting something back for your time and effort.

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Public transport user? If you're sick of phantom ghost services on the 'official' RTI sources, check bustimes.org for actual 'real' RTI, if it's on their map it actually exists.

    1000 cans over what period?

Minimal time and effort involved in throwing cans and bottles into a bag and bringing the bag with you when you go shopping.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,149 ✭✭✭Buffman

Period doesn't matter, cumulative time and effort would be the same, and being able to use your own recycling bin costs substantially less of both.

In fairness up to 10% of people are thought by experts to have vitamin deficiencies... can be a situation created by other medical conditions or problems…

For those people, just eating a rounded diet of food won't sort it alone, you need vitamin supplements...

Do people really just throw away money like this?

There is no way in the world I'm allowing anyone else to hold onto my money

Being able to use your own recycling bin results in substantially lower recycling rates.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,149 ✭✭✭Buffman

I'm not going to drag this thread OT by going into the logic or lack of it in that post or the cons and non-pros of the DRS, there's a dedicated thread over on AH for it, but just so you know DRS does not say where it's recycling actually goes after it's all brought to Limerick and there is a substantial chance that after they remove the valuable cans, the worthless plastic is not substantially recycled at all.

One I seen recently, Nurofen 12 pack 6.99 Euro in the Republic, whilst in the the North and UK its £1.50 for a pack of 8, that's some mark up in Ireland.

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

Get the generic 16 ibuprofen for 33p in Poundland

Always been amazed at how expensive take away pizzas are in Ireland. Growing up in the North of England, it was common to get a Pizza, Chips, and a small can for less than a fiver. Here the pizza is about €15.

Clever word play may win debates, but it doesn't make it true.

Understanding and explaining things, is not the same as justifying them, if in doubt… please re-read this statement.

'a substantial chance'! 🤣 There's a sound basis for public policy attacks if ever I heard one.

How much of it was recycled, cans and glass, when it went into the green bin and indeed the black bin?

Alcohol is ridiculously cheaper not the new mandatory unit pricing we brought in because the pubs wanted it.

Was up yesterday as have a party at weekend and got 4 litres of Smirnoff (€80) and 72 cans of Harp (€84) €164 in total

That would have cost €240 at least in the 26 counties

Went then to a takeaway and got Fresh Cod, Chips and a Can (€7)

My local chippy that's €14 without the can

The fact you mention glass shows your complete lack of knowledge on the DRS.

The fact you focus on a typo rather than engaging on the substantive issue shows the weakness of your position.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,149 ✭✭✭Buffman

Typo, sure. As I've said previously I'm not dragging this thread any more off topic on DRS specifics. It's up to individuals to decide if not paying the DRS and having to waste their time getting their own deposit back is a 'saving' and thus makes them cheaper in the UK.

If you want to discuss recycling rates etc feel free to comment on the DRS thread.

We were in the range yesterday, the one that has replaced homebase in Gulliver's retail park in santry; one thing I wanted to get was bird feed.

It was €49.99 for a 12.75kg sack of peanuts; an identically sized bag on therange.co.uk is STG£21.99.
