Duckett scored 181 in the match, he should be in the conversation, held it together twice, with wickets falling around him

Who was player of the match? I missed that but presume Smith then?

Aussies getting some abuse from the blazers going to lunch, complaint launched.

That was a fairly dramatic test match over the 5 days. Highlights for me:

    • Aussies performing well considering they had the worst of the weather against them.
    • Smith being booed, going on to make a ton in difficult conditions
    • Ducketts first innings.
    • The number of body blows on both sides
    • 'Gaz' Lyon for his last man standing effort.
    • Starc ripping out Popes middle wicket with an unplayable ball.
    • Starcs non-catch. May result in a law modification to stop players putting themselves at injury in similar circumstances.
    • Careys stumping. Bairstow is a dozy and only has himself to blame.
    • Stokes performance - should be man of the match.
    • The ruckus in the Long Room, let alone at Lords in general.

Hard to disagree with that. Fair dues to the Aussies though, they held it together and toughed it out.

Aussies still not firing on all cylinders in the batting, have the capacity to run up big scores in that top 6 and Green & Cummins are handy too.

Lyon is a loss you'd think, quicks are good but need a reliable spinner to threaten & vary.

Both teams have been in with a good shout of winning either of first 2, with the Aussies having the winning knack. Has to be at least one of the final three matches where they demolish the opposition.

As for the stumping/ run out - thought ours was worse as the UAE batsman was injured. That was in bad taste.

Why was bairstow walking out of the crease so fast. Fair play to Carey for noticing this as he threw it immediately. Good tests so far but the pitches are poor or the bowling is poor, i yet to decide, all the bouncers is a bit much at times

The ball was in play, and he was out, England were hammered by west indies in the mid 80s, 5-0 twice, they wanted to ban fast bowling, Pakistan were accused of cheating when they won a series in England led by Wasim and Waqar, so I think it's more English sour grapes than any laws being infringed

Out of the last 7 Ashes tests England have lost 6 and drawn 1….

a whitewash in this series is seriously possible now too .. this English team is flawed and frail throughout…. Not enough runs and more importantly not taking enough wickets either.

Anderson looks finished… 3 wickets in 4 innings of this series…41 years old in a couple of weeks… once upon a time regardless of the opposition you’d see him get usually at least 4 wickets per innings, now he can’t get 4 in 2 tests.

the captaincy and management of the team looks suspect…. Is suspect.

from team selection to tactics…. Needing wickets badly and no slips or close catchers….that makes as much sense as a doctor telling someone with a peanut allergy to go get a job with Manhattan…the whole no slips debacle….“we’ll wait for you to make a mistake” as opposed to… “we are gonna fûck you up and force you into mistakes”

the ECB unless something changes need to get a new England captain and a new coach…

ok, not having the talent resources of yesteryear is a fair gripe but when you need to enable that gap in ability with your opponents you need to double down on getting the basics right… selecting the right team and utilising the correct tactics…. They are doing neither.

Great article in the Guardian today on Bairstows stumping.

To be fair this could apply equally to any cricketing nation. Im sure if you look hard enough there are plenty of similar instances of this.

Seen a couple of replays. Not a fan of this Australian team and a lot of the characters in it, but I don’t see any legitimate reason to complain about the stumping . It was majorly opportunistic certainly but Bairstow just wanders carelessly from his crease, never grounded his bat after leaving the delivery which would have been the instigator to the umpire calling over, he instead just starts ambling down the other end, just walks off… when Carey had only just grabbed the ball in hand….not like Carey grabbed it and waited 3/4 seconds, he completed the take and immediate goes to stump Bairstow out when he sees him stroll off….

JB is a vastly experienced cricketer and he should know better…

thought the Aussies should have shown a bit more decorum going through the long room one or two seemed to be gloating and goading the members. That certainly was uncalled for and not a very good reflection on them.

A lot of needle now….. a statement from Yorkshire Cricket…“We will continue to work closely with both the ECB and West Yorkshire Police to ensure our safety measures are proportionate for this fixture.”

when did you ever see the likes of that…? 🤓

    England Squad….

Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, James Anderson , Jonny Bairstow, Stuart Broad , Harry Brook , Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett , Dan Lawrence, Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson, Joe Root , Josh Tongue , Chris Woakes, Mark Wood

Lawrence in, Rachid out the only change I see. Lawrence… 14 months since his last test, averages just 29…. 11 tests and just 4 half centuries, no hundreds at all. 3 wickets in 11 tests which suggests he isn’t exactly the international ‘all rounder’ some market him as. Probably reckon this next test or two is his last bite at the cherry….

that said he did score 152 last week for Essex…. and a couple of decent half centuries in previous fixtures…. Only 25 still but he’s probably under real pressure to contribute now….having not exactly set the world alight…

They had to walk threw a torrent of abuse, a lot of it aimed at Khawaja oddly enough. I felt they just smiled but one member tried to trip Warner too.

Don't think the Aussies did anything wrong

Your having a laugh arent you? They were simply reacting to the abuse of the Long Room of the so called members of the home of cricket. They were an absolute disgrace given the unique & privileged position in having access to players.

Regardless, all this brouhaha about the media are having moralising on the 'spirit' of the game, England will be clearly concerned that despite having the best of the conditions across the 5 days, they failed to capitalise on the opportunities as a team.

I don't think they have ever come back to win an Ashes series from 2-0 so its going to take some effort to win the next 2.

The players shouldn’t react either. It’s no different to confronting a fan in the stands. Stokes had to apologise for giving some back in South Africa once. Pretty certain there was talk of a potential ban too at the time. Example one million of the Aussies being masters of dishing it out but not liking it returned.

Don’t get me wrong, those members were a disgrace and it has no place in the game.

the players walk past in close enough proximity to them . There are multiple competitions in varying sports where in less contentious situations a lot worse is said. Soccer & GAA for instance…And pretty much in every one of those sports there is a players charter or rule that the players just keep going and don’t start yelling and roaring at crowds and spectators…

Not saying every individual in the long room behaved impeccably but the Aussies need to rise above it. They can’t afford to take the moral high ground…. ironic that two of the offended most parties seemed to be Smith and Warner 🤪….. two fellas with some of the dodgiest records of adherence to rules and sportsmanship and absolute outright contempt for cricketing fans, having been the head honchos arranging tampering with cricket balls, remember sandpapergate.. ? 😉 but they seemingly can show outright contempt for their opponents and cricket fans the world over by those actions but the odd comment in the long room and they lose all sense of reality….

I reckon there is a lot of commentators on here who have not been to a competitive soccer or GAA game. There is much worse done there. If you are going to put yourself out there this goes with the territory

    Too many Karens

    My thoughts

In the interests of fair play etc I think the appeal against Bairstow should have been withdrawn....he wasnt trying to take advantage

Arrogance of the English team is shocking....playing no specialist keeper.........I would play Foakes and drop Pope....with Foakes they win the First Test

Again, the arrogance of declaring on Day 1 in First Test at approx 400 with Root at the crease? Let him bang away till he or Anderson gets out and get an extra 20/30 possibly to pressure Australia

Not fully sure of the rules re catches, but IMO if you are catching and the ball is touching the ground, it shouldnt be a catch, so for me Starcs wasnt a catch, and neither was Smiths to get rid of Root (I think)in the first innings

Broad needs to grow up....celebrating lbws before appealing......it cost him IMO.....appealing properly, may have given him the wicket that they didnt review but should have....umpires surely in 50/50 calls will say no to the guy appealing like Broad does...human nature

Bazball is fine, but Root is one of the best in the world playing "normally"....leave him at it....bazball prob suits Baistow, Stokes and a few others so let Root be the calm around the storm

Aussies to win 4-1...England will go after Murphy but he will get wickets

but the odd comment in the long room and they lose all sense of reality…

The 'odd comment' resulted in 3 members being suspend and the MCC issuing an unreserved apology. I cant recall ever seeing the Long Room in such chaos ever - personally I though it was great to watch. All of the Toffs behaving badly!

A few of the Aussies reacted to some of the nutjobs, but by all reports the players arent upset by this. Cummins even acknowlegded that in his post match conference that its all part of the show.

As I said, its all a distraction from the bigger issue in that the home side are 2 zip in a 5 test series.

This is all just whingeing coming out of the English because they're being soundly beaten and some of that is self inflicted with their team selection and tactics.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,395 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

Is it not the case that Carey observed Bairstow wandering before the stumping. That it wasn't the first time he was careless and Carey was watching for a likely repeat. That's fair enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,764 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

The declaration just had massive alarm bells ringing regarding the leadership or lack of it. Seemed like Stokes trying to make a billy big balls statement and it backfired. Don’t know what input McCullum had in the call, you’d imagine he’d have to have been participating in tactical conversations in the lead up…

Leeds weather looks ok in general. Monday afternoon a few showers about in the afternoon but set fair the rest of the test with a ‘chance’ of a shower late on Saturday afternoon… so pretty much

In tests that results were achieved the stats say that teams batting first won 44.4% of the time, the team batting second wins 55.6%…so the toss isn’t as crucial an aspect as it is at other grounds…

Ollie Pope out of the series with another shoulder injury. From what I see Dan Lawrence is expected to be the replacement with no changes to the squad made. Not to be too insensitive but I think this doesn’t weaken England at all. Of course the Foakes fans are mad he’s not the replacement and and I see their point.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,340 ✭✭✭VillaMad

Anytime I've seen Lawrence play for England he has looked a little bit like a rabbit in the headlights so I'm not sure he is up to the pressure of an Ashes. Presume Root will got to 3 and he will drop in at 4.

I've always thought that apart from Foakes being a decent keeper that he also worked well as a bit calmness down the batting order due to the amount of over aggressive batting ahead of him.

Ive been to heaps of both , and neither has any relevance to cricket or the ashes whatsoever.

There was a great article by an Aussie journalist in the London Times yesterday. He pointed out that the toffs of the MCC were outraged about the correct application of the laws created by…the MCC

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,232 ✭✭✭cosatron

i wonder if stokes had stayed in and England won, would there be this mass hysteria over Bairstow's wicket. I doubt it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,110 ✭✭✭wassie

LOL. Media having a field day on both sides of the fence. Good to see Stokes is playing it up also.

Mind you, if Stokes & Co lose the next one, the British Press will turn very quickly.

Really looking forward to this match!

Of course the media will turn. It’s what they do best, hype them up only to tear them back down. Even some cricket journalists you can feel are half hoping it would go belly up. The ones with posters of Boycott still on their walls. Negativity writes more pages and gets more clicks. Don’t think the England fans will turn so quickly though. Stokes has a lot of credit in the bank.
