it was defiantly a negative having it one at the same time but the laois performance against down didnt help either , antrim were excellent against meath though which holds up the competition

Have been to a number of workshops over the years where Conor has presented/coached players. Seems very impressive.

Has anyone from Down said they’re “happy” to be playing in the Tailteann cup?? It has been explained what has gone wrong up there, the success of club teams and internal problems have hampered the county team.

When you end up in a secondary competition, that you think is beneath you, you can react in one of two ways:

    • Don't even bother and phone it in
    • Accept that this is your current level but that the best way to ensure it's not your future level is to go ahead and win the thing

Last year Down went with the first option, this year they're going with the second. Just because they're trying to win the competition doesn't mean that they are happy that they are playing in it.

That's exactly it - this competition (and similarly in the SM groups) has given all of the management teams extra time & games with their players and that's surely a benefit to them for next year

    Final Today:

    Odds:

Surprisingly long odds on Meath considering they won the group game. Has there been some injury news or is it just because Down seem to like playing in Croke Park?

23 mins played. One of the most fluke goals ever scored in Croke Park? Meath 1-1 Down 0-5

    Two poor teams

Poor enough display from both teams so far

No its a long road from this to being competitive at Sam Maguire level and will take either team years all going well.

But it would a nice big step in the right direction. Would love to see these 2 teams get back to a competitive level again.

This game itself is poor quality. Conditions not helping, but its on a day like today that the difference in how the top teams use the ball and how expertly they do the simple things is starkly illustrated.

Meath running straight into Down players every time, feck sake.

    Two good points though

Goal chance at either end, no one takes it

It is typical of the style of game when two teams are well matched. Not the free flowing football Down were allowed to play by Laois. They looked like candidates for Sam next year on that performance.

    Cracking run and point

That Jack O’Connor looks like a baller. Not afraid to take a shot either.

Grey takes it with one arm, other arm being pulled back. Some man

Good to see a young team playing with a bit of freedom and kicking points

Meath really stepped up in the second half

    Costello - pure class

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,285 ✭✭✭This is it

Yes! Good second half was the difference

Goal in the 5th minute of added time seals it for Meath. Not the highest quality of matches but Meath was the better team with their shot selections and decision making and defended better. Meath 2-13 Down 0-14

Well done Meath. It was a better second half.

Pleased for O Rourke. Gave up a cushy number for what looked at thankless job.

Well done Meath. Well done Colm O'Rourke's. It's a matter of building on this next year

    Slava Ukrainii

You can't argue with that result. Meath were the better team. Some great points scored and performances.

Good interview with Colm O'Rourke there. The Latin phrase he used at the end, “Nunc est bibendum” translates as “Now is the time for drinking”. And yes I had to use Jimmy Google.

Are ye joking!! The Dubs have been wiping the boards for God knows how many years in Leinster. Who can remember how many Leinster titles they have now, it's a joke. The other counties are like weeds struggling for a bit of light.

As the conditions improved, so did the game. Very enjoyable second half. Some wonderful scores from O'Connor, Flynn and Costello in the

Fair play to the lads and Colm. After the first two games of the league, it was 6 dreadful results in a row resulting in dropping to the Tailteann Cup. Could very well have written off the season but they got refocused and now have guaranteed All Ireland football next season. And we've managed to get a bit of a winning feeling back and some silverware which we haven't had in a long time.

Some talented young players coming through and it will only benefit them playing games against the best.

Brilliant interview by O'Rourke on RTE after the game,he has a likable dry wit. Never thought by watching a football game that I would broaden my mind learning a Latin phrase and also gaining some knowledge of the poet Horace. Well done to Meath
