2nd year in a row the Tailteann cup favourites don't win the competition. Full time Cavan 0-15 Down 1-17

    FT: Cavan 0-15 Down 1-17

Fair play to Down. Fully deserved their win. Laois, Meath and Down through to the Croke Park semi-finals. Meath and Down cannot be paired in the semi-final draw. Antrim v Carlow is tomorrow.

Down..... You don't want down to be gaining confidence by winning a few games.

Anyone from Ulster will tell you, Down don't lack self confidence (cocky fvxkwrs is probably the term), win a game or 2 and they'll fully believe they'll win it out, and this panel will be 100% sure they'll win this out now.

Cavan kept in touch but the goal clinched it. Brilliant move but Down were trying to work the goal chance all day, and got what they deserved - fair play!

As the two strongest teams left in the competition I'd say the GAA are happy enough that they can't be drawn together in the semis

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,428 ✭✭✭legendary.xix

Yeah, it'll be the final everyone will expect now. Down beat Meath in the '91 All-Ireland final.

Disappointing match in Navan. Meath were just far superior across the field, although Wexford did create four goal chances in the second half (unlikely to have altered the result even if half of them went in). Morris and McEntee were on fire but Wexford were so loose defensively- basically two on two inside with an entire ocean of space to exploit- that you'd wonder how the management didn't cop it until it was too late. Ran into contact too often against a physically superior home side too- our in-game intelligence was just...lacking.

Playing an attacking brand of football may be easy on the eye but it comes at a huge cost at the other end. The fact Wexford seem to chop and change no.6 every game sums up their plight- they have no-one to play that lynchpin position with Martin O'Connor away (Furlong got absolutely destroyed there today but is more an attacking wing-back), and Sheehan's injury means we haven't had a natural full-back for most of the year either. Overall there are signs of recovery in the county, and the age profile is good, but we are still naive tactically and systemically.

If its the last time Brosnan pulls on a Wexford jersey then its a sad day- he has been some servant since 2007 and trails only Mattty on our all-time scorers list (as far as I know). Still as good a point scorer as what's there in the county.

Just seen that repeat pairing can't happen where possible for the semi final draw. Down and my lovely Laois also have to play 4 weeks in row. Hardly fair at the semi final stage, is it? There is then a three week break to the final.

Not sure why they don't have an open draw for the semi final, or even just have the whole championship draws done at the start. Should also be a two week break until semi finals and another two week break to final.

The same rules also apply for Sam Maguire so the semi final draw might be preselected depending on who gets there too.

Don't know why all draws have to be done Monday morning either when a slot on the Sunday Game or during the Sunday's six o'clock news would suffice

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,428 ✭✭✭legendary.xix

If Down and Laois won their groups, they would have gotten a week off. That's the reward and jeopardy within the current structure. The availability of Croke Park is a factor. Croke Park is available next Sunday for the Tailteann double header of semi-finals. On the following weekends Croke Park will be used for All-Ireland football quarter-finals, semi-finals in both codes and then the finals.

Are the All Ireland football quarter-finals definitely happening at Croke Park? The GAA website's fixtures page has TBD down for them (whereas it has Croke park down for the Tailteann Cup semis)

The GAA are saying to be determined by the CCCC. The expectation is Croke Park though. With all the neutral venue group games in provincial grounds, the quarter-finals most likely will all be in Croke Park.

Whilst I agree with you about the 'week off if they'd won the group' thing, I can see it becoming a bit of a 'cause' in the next few weeks.

You know 'we had to win against xxx in the final group game, then we had to travel down to Kerry on a Sunday and win after extra-time - some of those lads didn't get back home until 1am and had to work the next day, and now they expect us to travel across the country to Croke Pk 6 days later and face Mayo who had a week off. These are amateurs Marty, but you wouldn't even expect professionals to do it'.

    Full-time score:

    AontroimGAA 1-19

    Carlow_GAA 1-15

Hard luck to Carlow who put in a brave effort. Antrim join Meath, Down and Laois in the semi-finals. Meath and Down cannot be drawn against each other. Meath v Laois and Down v Antrim would be interesting pairings for the edge of provincial rivalry.

I get the reasoning behind group winners getting a week off before their quarter finals, but I don't get the reasoning behind no break between quarter and semi finals. No club championship would be run off in such a compressed calendar. The draw only taking place on Monday bugs me too.

The semi finals never needed to be in Croke Park in the first place. The stands will be empty and atmosphere will be terrible. In Laois case, i'd rather see them play Meath in Tullamore or Down in Breffni or Mullingar.

Agreed as a Meath supporter, croke park will be dead

id like us to meet Andys Antrim!

Croke Park won't be all that bad and players want these games in Croke Park. It was a selling point for the Tailteann Cup.

The Carlow v Offaly McDonagh final generated good atmosphere though it was only the lower Hogan that had the crowd.

The RTÉ cameras will be on the opposite side of the pitch next week. The lower Hogan will be full and it will be an enjoyable enough spectacle.

    Down v Laois

    Meath v Antrim

Down and Meath favourites to make the final.

Andy McEntee up against his old team

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,535 ✭✭✭MacDanger

Bit of a slap in the face for the Mayo/Galway game to be shown live at roughly the same time as the two TC games

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,428 ✭✭✭legendary.xix

The high profile nature of the games influenced the decision. GAAGO were to show 2 preliminary quarter-finals. RTÉ and GAAGO have been given an extra preliminary quarter-final each.

The McDonagh final was a standalone final this year. Accident rather than by design as the U20 final was postponed a week for Offaly.

If the Tailteann final was held on the day before the All-Ireland final, the Tailteann semi-finals could be curtain raisers to the All-Ireland football semi-finals. This would avoid the fixture pile up of next weekend.

logic doesn't come into the equation with the gaa, never has probably never will, on this occasion they are trying to highlight, promote the importance of this Tailteann cup [whether imaginary or real]

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,363 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

They are, but showing Galway v Mayo on RTE1 at the same time (overlapping both games) will mean they won't pick up much of a neutral audience to 'showcase' them. For example just abut every pub will switch on Galway Mayo when the time comes.

Lively game. Meath lucky to be level with the intercept for the goal. But really well taken.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,185 ✭✭✭✭namloc1980

Decent game. The virtually empty Croke Park is a shame.

  • Registered Users Posts: 312 ✭✭Strong and Faithful

Looks like a reasonable crowd too. Bar that oul empty behind the goals look you get especially in Croke Park.

Is Dermot McAleese anything to the former president?
