Bryan Dobson, Mary Wilson, Darragh Moloney, George Lee.....

Do you think those stated salaries include employer pension contributions at somewhere between 18 and 22 percent of salary?

    I would think not.

Anyone else sick sore and tired listening to RTE talking about RTE .

First item on the news at eight this morning.

Must be nothing important happening in the world 🙄

The total cost of RTÉ’s highest earning presenters represents less than 1% of RTÉ’s total operating costs.

our presenters play an important role in RTÉ’s provision of vital news, information and entertainment to audiences right across the country and enable us to generate commercial revenue which is essential to fund RTÉ’s public services

Are the contract's for the highest paid stars coming up for renewal within the next 12 to 18 months? RTE need to adopt a take it or leave it approach when they renew, if these stars feel like going abroad then let them at it. RTs woes in the UK are a cautionary tale.

Claire Byrne confirms her outrageous salary on her radio programme.

Well she said the published figure is an average. She's ONLY on around €220k nowadays.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,671 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Perhaps if RTÉ had release those figures last week as they had planned we wouldn't be hearing about them this morning. You have to remember that the national broadcaster has been mismanaged for the last 2 decades, resulting in 5 resignations last year and its looking more and more likely that the Board of Directors may be removed, or the potential for 5 of them to go.

I am sure Morning Ireland discussed other things. Right not just RTÉ.

I cant understand the high salaries of staffers Daragh moloney and George lee ?? How many hours minutes do they appear on RTE each week month !!! ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,138 ✭✭✭Gregor Samsa

Plus, if RTE don't cover it, they'll be (rightly) accused of covering it up. It's a newsworthy topic - so no surprise it's on the news.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 960 ✭✭✭amlinopta

Both seem to be missing for weeks at a time? Darragh is good but Champions League and GAA on very select dates. Never hear him on bulletins and very seldom on the radio. George Lee must top the list of earnings per news report filed, it's incredible how he has got away with it for so long.

Yep George Lee is mind boggling.....If I recall correctly he has been in the top ten for a while now, for what???! The chap makes 1/2 reports a week! The Political team are filing daily reports, sometimes multiple reports, appearing in studio, and often live links on all 3 main bulletins (1, 6 and 9 O'clock), and I've never seen any of them in the top earners list

Could do with another cut. At least Joe's show sort of serves a purpose and is a laugh for us boards people

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,671 ✭✭✭RoTelly

I'd love to know how much Bill O'Herlihy was on, here's an extract from Pat Spillane's book, I am not sure about the sense of humor in the Irish Examiner's sports office.

Never listened to his show or any of RTE's radio stations apart from RTE Gold which should be on fm to gain a wider audience. Even when most of these so called top talent contracts come up for renewal they will still be on a nice ĺittle earner. Whatever percentage cut they take will just be a drop in the ocean. The gravy train may have stopped but you can be sure the likes of Duffy and his cohorts have enough in the bank that any cuts to their pay packet won't make much difference.

The man was omnipresent with his daily dose of misery and fear for the best part of 2 years during you know what.... But now that's all that's all over and forgotten about he's back to doing reports on the young scientist of the year or the latest on climate change and the likes. Great work if you can get it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 206 ✭✭deise man

George lee should have been told clear off when he decided he didn't he didn't like being a TD. Himself and fergal bowers on every night reading out yhe gospel according to tony holohan. Now telling us we're all doomed due to climate change.

The issue here as I see it is not whether anybody here could do the job, bro.

Its the outrageous wedges paid to them and the lack of any regulations on them from ‘management’ !

I mean one dude on a car deal for 5 years………c’mon man

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,725 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

I'd say Derek Mooney could be near the top.

He had a programme on rte radio 1 I think for 1hr per week.

    He'd be on big dough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,516 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

Correct NIMAN, you see, this is the stuff JQTaxpayer finds it very hard to get info on.

There must be a fair few types as you describe in the background getting serious wedges but appearing infrequently

    on either radio or tv.

Derek Mooney who I think is a decent skin is one example, Marty Morrissey wasn’t worked too hard over the winter

Not much sign or sound from Bowers or the Union one who was roaring and shouting back when Tubs was cancelled.

    Uhmmmm………

I don’t think Bowers is on the to 10 list is he? Thing is though, unlike George Lee, I’d say Fearghal Bowers is earning whatever he makes. He’s the health correspondent so I’d there a day really when sobering health related doesn’t pop up on the news?

As for Lee, he hardly ever shows up and since if that borders on conjecture. He ran through hoops lately I saw trying to link storm Isha to climate change despite Met Eireann stating that it couldn’t be really attributed. He got there in the end himself though with sobering asking the lines of “Well this of the sort of stuff that could happen more regularly”. I think he’s poor in general. I think there are lots of aspects to climate change he could be highlighting in the context of current events. Economic migration being one. We might end up doing reasonably ok with climate change in the medium term but many won’t and they’ll want to move to areas that fare better, like here. George certainly isn’t in the to 10 contributors to the 6-1 anyway.

Numbers 11 to 25 is the place to be on this list, Bren. Great money plus the pension contributions (for the staffers). Some cheerfully useless c*nts and some way over the hill merchants occupying those numbers, ya can be sure. And nobody knows your business.

I note the BBC publish a much longer list. The same should be done here and the Minister should insist on it, in the spirit of the "new" RTE - if there'll ever be such a thing.

I just had a quick glance through the BBC's 22/23 list and I note that journalist Orla Guerin (178000 - 184000 Stg) is on similar money to George Lee!

    Something fackin wrong there.

Yes, number 11 must be pleased to avoid the publicity. Derek Mooney presumably in the 11-25 range. The lesser spotted Tony O'Donoghue appeared on the nine o'clock news last night, maybe his first gig of the year? Callan now slotting into the 11-25 range also at a mere €150k.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,979 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

So why couldnt these RTE staffers who are idle for most of the week slot into the Tubridy 9 to 10 hour - seeing as Bakhurst promised a cut in discretionary / Contractor spending ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,516 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

Nice one… wish RTE would do something like that, certainly if the taxpayer ends up supporting them via revenue we should certainly know more detail.

When one considers the potential audience and workload at the BBC it screams even higher at the wedge the RTE lot are trousering.

I don't know if poor auld Backhurst is the reforming saviour some make him out to be. This is not the kind of job he interviewed for originally.

I'm not sure if much is changing at all in there. He's doing a big meeting with the staff today. A bit of awkward questioning expected from some of the staff. Maybe even some fireworks. I'm sure Fionnan will have all the details shortly thereafter in the Indo.

Tell us 5 idle staffers you think should have been considered for the 9am show

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,671 ✭✭✭RoTelly

either of the two presenters on Drivetime

any of the 5 presenters from Morning Ireland

    Derek Mooney?

Either of the two presenters on Game On

Will Leahy, Rick O' Shea maybe? Yes, I know they have a gig on Gold but thanks not broadcasting in the traditional sense. It's a webstream.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,671 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Not a webstream it is also available on Saorview and on Virgin Media's Radio EPG. Why do you think they have to get permission to close there extra stations, because they are on broadcast systems.

But yes any of the presenters on Gold or any other extra station could take that slot.

You'd think RTÉ had no Radio Presenters to hand.

What I'd have done is put Claire Byrne on 9/11 and bring back Ray D'Arcy to mid mornings 11 till one, Ray would then be back on his original Today fm time and he could reconnect with all the 6 foot 5 hardmen who had tears rolling down their eyes and he could also play a few records. Lou Duffy's music program could go into the 3pm slot
