Looking forward to this one. Respawn rarely fail to disappoint. A rare day one for me.

They're adding in fast travel so at least they are taking on board criticism of the first one. First game felt like a rough draft so hopefully this is a lot more polished.

I really loved the first and I'm looking forward to this but the map in the first one was a dose to follow.

Combats looking great in that, loved the first one :)

I enjoyed the first for the most part but their lazy efforts to increase the game length did bug the sh!t out of me, that being having to back track through the entire level you just plowed through bugged the sh!t out of me 😣

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 81,097 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sephiroth_dude

It was the map in the first one that really pissed me off, really hard to follow, I hope there's more of those tombs to explore though or whatever they were.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,913 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Yeah the backtracking, level design, and in-game map were all pretty awful in the first game, especially how one-way many of the routes were due to all the sliding sections. But as Retro said, there'll be more of a fast travel system in this game to address that.

Can’t wait for this game. Loved the first one despite the confusing map and the backtracking.

Can't wait for this. Loved the 1st one, and if they can improve upon a few of the issues of that, i expect to love this as well.

Open critic says the reviews are coming tomorrow. Previews have been very strong but think they are based on 3-5 hours of gameplay.

    A blog on the accessability features;

Theres a 'slow mode' option which sounds interesting - obviously helps in combat but also anything that requires timing like platforming sections.

Slow Mode: One of the options that we’re most excited for our players to discover is our Slow Mode toggle, which allows players to slow down the action of the world in order to ease the challenge of both combat and platforming.

Early reviews looking very good. 8/9's across the board it seems.

Unsurprisingly, there seem be to a fair few technical issues though. Can't seem to get new releases without that these days.

Eurogamer didn't give it a recommended.

General consensus seems to be it's a minor improvement over the first, but not a major one. It does at least seem to have made some effort towards sorting out the appalling map.

I had a lot of issues with the first but it had an interesting enough final act that I wouldn't mind playing the second. But given how rapidly and frequently discounted the first was, I'll happily wait until a Steam sale down the line. Especially as it seems to have had big technical issues for a fair few reviewers.

I put little value in a eurogamer.net review these days.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,631 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Find them on the money compared to other that get caught up in the hype train. Near everytime Eurogamer reviews something and there's controversy you look back in 5 years and realise they were right.

Any comments on the map being improved?

Preload complete, 147 gigs is a lot.

Eurogamer review sounds good. They dig into the issues mid review which boils down to it's not god of war or sekiro but kinda in the middle.

This is the the summary: But - and a big but, I can't emphasise this enough - Star Wars: Jedi Survivor remains fundamentally really fun. Cal's platforming skills expand even more, and Jedi: Survivor's set pieces have become even more elaborate. There's a whiff of Force Unleashed at times, with the angsty but wonderfully over the top sense of action and melodrama. It is always enjoyable to ping yourself around runnable walls and ziplines and now grapple hooks (I know) like a human pinball. It is much more desirable that Star Wars games have a little goofiness, from genuinely funny companions like Greeze to the sheer amount of Jedi Suspension of Disbelief you have to harness throughout, than it is that they become too self-serious or stoic. UItimately this is the almost impossible tradeoff Respawn has with Star Wars: Jedi Survivor. Its lack of focus is what holds it back - and also what makes it such a blast.

The vitirol over the review is insane. If you read the review you can tell the reviewer had a blast despite flaws so fans of the original would take away that they would enjoy this one. Got personally thanked by the reviewer chris for defending him, honestly think he is one of the best reviewers on the site.

Anyone play it today (release date).

Was thinking of downloading to PC but seems to have lots of performance issues / bugs and crashes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,860 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

Have it downloaded on PC via EA, but not played it. Hearing its a bit of a pig, but most impressions seem to be prior to an expected patch. Patches can help no doubt, but if a game is deemed fit for release in such a state, it probably won't be the very first patch that turns it around completely.

More so than the console ones apparently, but again, most impressions seem to be of the PS5 version which has performance mode issues, and reports of broken HDR support. Fidelity/30FPS seems to be the best way of playing right now from reading online. Personally, I'm interested to hear how the Xbox one fares as while it may be very similar, its performance mode may be better handled via VRR right now, but who's to say bar those who have bought it. Sounds like a lot of user impressions are hanging their hat on a day one patch, while the rest are enjoying it for what it is in fidelity mode etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,913 ✭✭✭✭Penn

I'll definitely give it a go on PS5 later and see how it handles. I'll play as long as it's playable. From the sounds of things though, even though they'd already delayed it by 6 weeks, they should have pushed it back until later in the year. Fallen Order was very buggy at launch too and even after a couple of patches still had issues. You'd think they'd have been trying to make sure the same didn't happen again.

    EA never learn.

The screenshots on the Rock Paper Shotgun review were taken on a minimum spec PC (1070) and they genuinely look like something from a PC game released 15 years ago: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/star-wars-jedi-survivor-review

Kind of staggering what a terrible state 90% of AAA games on PC are at launch these days.

Are the settings anywhere near close to high in those screenshots? The lighting is so flat, no modern lighting techniques and there looks to be no ambient occlusion at all.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 30,114 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

The reviewer says she was playing on medium settings, which was needed to get past some slowdown.

I mean it's old enough hardware for sure, but would still expect a game to look much better than that on a minimum-spec machine.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,631 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

That's pretty shocking. There's a complete lack of any GI or AO in those screens. It's literally a PS2 vertex shaded lighting model and really shouldn't be runing poorly with those specs. It also really shouldn't be that poor at medium settings.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 30,114 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

They've done a proper settings article and it seems to run pretty terribly on much more capable hardware too (pre-patch). Screenshots at higher settings look a bit better but still not great at all.

    Also 😐️:

The worst thing about this is that the devs are going to take all the flak while it's the come snorting execs that told respawn to focus on the PS5 version to get it out the door early.

HDR on PS5 is broken. Had to turn it off completely. Thought they were going for some fancy artistic aesthetic to make the ointro look like a comic book.

    They had not.

Switched it off and it still looks amazing. Plays really well. Not that I can get near the PS5 since the 5 year old got home from school. He has been mad for it since clearing the first one over the last few weeks. He is flying through it already.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,672 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

The statement from EA reads like it's the fault of PC users for not using the correct combination of hardware and/or OS.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 30,114 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

TBH the game should not be released in that kind of state. But best thing now would be to pull the PC version from sale temporarily (ala Cyberpunk or Arkham Knight) as it’s clearly a ****, broken version.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,913 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Played a few hours. In terms of gameplay, it's fun so far. Playing on Jedi Master and not finding it too hard yet, though fighting one enemy and being pelted with blasters by another off-screen doesn't help. Parry window is still generous enough on Jedi Master.

Performance is very hit and miss on PS5. Some parts it's fine, some parts it's choppy, and then some parts is a f*cking sh*tshow. I'll keep playing for now but not in a mad rush to play it either just because of the performance issues. Hopefully a big patch coming soon, and that they don't just focus on the PC version since it's the worst performing one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,936 ✭✭✭nix

haha i love how they used the phrase "performing to our standards" its the same business as usual for EA to me lol

But yeah, glad i was told this before i started the EA gamepass sub to plow through it this weekend like i did the last SWJ game, ill give it a few weeks/months..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,143 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

Played the opening few hours and really enjoyed it. Traversal is great. You have the trademark respawn wall running but now you have a grapple too.

Haven't hit any issues. There was a day one patch that seems to have fixed most things.

I’ve seen Alex slowly losing his mind over the state of PC ports, but even then the pure fury in this one is a sight to behold 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,936 ✭✭✭nix

I'm surprised EA still have any rights to making star wars games after the battlefront 2 mess, this is just blowing my mind, EA must have already got the sacking and it just hasnt been announced? It nuts how much careless fail is thrown around with these games..

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 30,114 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

EA doesn’t have exclusive rights to the series anymore. There’s a bunch of non EA Star Wars games on the way, including that (somewhat baffling) Quantic Dream one. But EA is still making SW games too… just not exclusively.
