England bossed the midfield last night - and as a neutral would say that France got favourable decisions , he wasnt going to give second pen . and I wasnt up for England, with the never-ending media blitz that would follow.

Maadonna at '86 was the GOAT

True, and Giroud had as much of a chance of taking the ball under his control for that as Mount did for the penalty he was awarded!

England went down very easily in and around the box in the hope of winning the game through a set piece. On the whole, they had no teeth against a relatively poor French defence and got what they deserved.

I don’t agree they didn’t create enough chances. They had more shots and more shots on target than France and yet they scored none when France had 2. That’s the only reason they are out. It is not because of the referee or something else.

i have a feeling that the English medias are part of the reason as well. They are arrogant and like to look down on their opponents before a game. Placarding posters of Harry Kane around Paris… saying Lloris was the weakest link. Look at the match he had and I m pretty sure he had extra motivation going into this match.

I know they made the finals of the Euro but he was contracted up until this tournament and could have saved themselves a few quid by not given him that two year contract extension.

Not like a club team was gonna rush in to steal him once his contract was up. Don't think they'll fire him but Southgate could walk away from the job. Though I can see him remaining for the Euros and then leaving once his contract was up unless they win the tournament.

The ref didn't give england anything they weren't due and gave a lot less the first half then they should have gotten.

The foul on saka before the goal was obvious and of course it stings more when France score a goal from it, and then get turned down for the penalty or freekick which the ref of linesman should have given,.they weren't hard decision.

Those 2 things even if evened out later (they weren't) changed the whole game and how it would play out. There is no one here who wouldn't be a bit salty about it if it happened to a team they support in a big game.

The ref was bad last night not as bad as in the argie game and 3 of the 4 refs in the quarters had well below par games and also wildly different interpretations of the game it seems.

Im surprised this is the cream of the crop of world refereeing

The real Ronaldo is the real World Cup GOAT.

Three World Cup two wins and one lose where he was poisoned and 15 goals in 19 games.

Ronaldo was in much better teams than Maradonna had at '86

Loved the real Ronaldo, but doesn't he only have the one WC win ?

    Like only ONE ????? '02

He was an unused 17 year old squad player in 94 win.

A long held Brazilian tradition of bringing an uncapped kid to a World Cup. Kaka has a 2002 medal.

Tony Cascarino wondered whether Trent should have being brought on for FK’s and crosses. I think he said England had about 10 crosses at the end of the game. Lloris claimed all of them.

Yeah Southgate doesn’t change things enough and is reactive rather than proactive. He has the squad if he wanted to make changes.

LVG for Holland is always thinking of tweaks and changes in contrast to Southgate.

I would say Southgate is a great fella for the man management. But would be tactically inflexible.

The Japanese are another crowd that showed tactically flexibility. I found a video here which describes how it helped Japan beat Germany and Spain.

I would imagine the organisers are quietly relieved that a England v Argentina final has been avoided. Security for that would have been a nightmare I reckon.

    This too shall pass.

Well if Iran v USA could pass off with no tension spilling over between opposing fans. You would have hoped Argentina v England would have went OK.

I wouldn’t have put it past Morocco beating England though.

I don’t get this logic on tactics. What is moroccos secret tactical master plan? Their manager only had 3 months with them and he’s just made them very organised, nothing overly complicated or tactically special.

I think unless you are next level manager , which very few are , then having solid man management skills, an organised, hard working team is the best best traits to have. Croatia and Morocco have shown that, dong think either of their managers will be managing one of Europe’s elite clubs anytime soon.

Argentina dont actually look that good at all , I would of put a bet on England had they won last night. I think last nights game is as good a game as we will get in terms of teams of similar quality matching up and England looked comfortable playing France at a high level.

Man management is probably the most important aspect of being a manager. I’ve seen far better (on paper) English managers make a mess of very talented teams.

That’s one point of view. Another one could be: maybe the English players shouldn’t have rolled on the floor at every occasion they could. It didn’t contribute to the referee trusting them. how many times they fell in the box during the match?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,949 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

France’s tactics look extremely inflexible. Griezmann the only one who is allowed to float.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,673 ✭✭✭✭flazio

American soccer fans aren't exactly "die hards" and we saw how liberal the Iran fans were.

Argentina v England is a different tension entirely, just look at the Top Gear Patagonia incident a few years ago.

Mind, as you said, Morocco won't be pushovers either having conquered 99% of Iberia. (Damn you Gibraltar)

    This too shall pass.

I think it’s more to do with Southgate’s footballing philosophy, he sacrifices creativity for a cautious, pragmatic approach which in the first instance sets out not to lose rather than take the initiative and believe That you will win.

The Macaulay Culkin impersonations from the English players was embarrassing.

They didn’t boss the midfield. They stopped the French midfield playing and created nothing. That isn’t bossing the midfield IMO. 2 units playing sideways and backwards passes.

I mean if thats what you saw there aint any discussion to be had here, have fun living in that world though.

Also im talking about instances at the start of the game and you are taking things later in the game and trying to apply them to early game which is again different reality kinda thing.

What I saw is an English team that created more goal opportunities than France but weren’t able to score them. In contrast, France managed to convert them.

For me, all these talks about the referee that should have awarded even more opportunities with free kicks (Saka) or penalty (Kane) is just an excuse. If England had the scoring ratio of France yesterday, they would have had 4 goals and there wouldn’t any discussions about the referee. I think that’s the missing piece for England.
