    😀 Fair enough.

I would say though, if the goal was disallowed for that I'd be furious. Yes it's the letter of the law, but it has absolutely nothing to do with the play, zero advantage was gained. So the spirit of the game should allow for it.

I asked the question seconds after the goal was scored so If I could see it was close the officals in the VAR must have seen it and decided to just ingore it.

The ball hadn't crossed the line before the squad players came on the pitch which means the goal should not have stood.

We won't be re-writing history here, but if there was one thing FIFA took from this tournament besides the £7b. I would hope that it would be to stop any non-players encroaching on the pitch, at any time. This just became a thing in the group stages, and was probably exacerbated by the 26 man panel. Also, there should be designated "warming up" areas, and players warming up should not be allowed become so active as they were across this World Cup. Perhaps there should be limits on how many can be out there at any time too.

Oh, and don't ever have a Winter World Cup again either.

Absolutely agree. Given that goals can be allowed where one of the eleven is in an offside position but not “active” in the play, it would be bizarre if a goal was to be ruled out because a couple of subs put a foot over the line on the far side of the pitch.

Indeed. It would be so bizarre to scratch it out that I can hardly believe I've seen that image so many times in the past week.

It's a bit ironic how L'Equipe and some French fans are complaining about that goal. They have short memories.

dont think gio reyna's mother is best pleased he didnt have a role in the world cup. what a bizarre story:

The mother of USA midfielder Gio Reyna has confirmed she reported head coach Gregg Berhalter for kicking his wife over 30 years ago....during an argument as a teenager.

The governing body instigated the probe after Berhalter, who took his side to the World Cup in Qatar, revealed he had been the subject of a threat to expose the incident involving his then girlfriend Rosalind in 1991 during the tournament.

sounds like the mother may have tried blackmailing him, but to step him down cos something he did as a teenager is disgraceful.

"But I want to be very clear that I did not ask for Gregg to be fired, I did not make any threats, and I don't know anything about any blackmail attempts, nor have I ever had any discussions about anyone else on Gregg's staff-I don't know any of the other coaches."

All this tells me is that the Reynas are fine with what they believe to be domestic abuse until they can use it as blackmail.

Berhalter’s position is effectively untenable now, I can’t see his contract being renewed. As much of a spoilt brat as he is, Reyna is the most talented player the US have. And since Berhalter is already an unpopular coach, this circus won’t go away were he to stay.

Best case scenario is a new coach, a hopefully more mature Reyna becoming the star man, and Berhalter sues the pair that spawned him for everything they’re worth
