They were very dependent on Bale, Ramsey and Allen.. Those three have all regressed a lot. They had a few players like Robson-Kanu, Ledley and James Collins who played well above their normal club level for their country and they are all gone now. They had a decent manager in Chris Coleman when they had that great run in the Euros.

They have quite a few young players coming through, some were in this squad and some are too young yet and if a few of the younger ones break.through they might have a competitive squad in a few years.

The man in the middle for the Costa Rica vs Germany game will be a woman!! Good lord.

This is the way it will be as long as England progress in this tournament.

Before games that narrative will be

"I can see this team giving England a good run, could beat them"

    When England win comfortably

"Ah sure they were only playing a pub team".

    Never a penalty. Shocking decision.

    Another bullshit VAR decision

Crazy pen given. Great save. Justice done.

Another terrible game in the worst World Cup ever. Even Uraguay 1930 was better than this one.

He had the eye on a ball that he was fully entitled to go for and momentum carried him into Messi. That's sport sometimes it happens.

If he looked at Messi from the off with intent it's a different story.

If an outfielder goes in for a straight leg tackle with his eye on the ball, misses the ball, but follows through on someone’s leg it’ll be a peno/free kick and probably at least a yellow. You can’t assault someone because you’re “going for the ball”.

No World Cup could be as bad as Italia ‘90 which is only remembered for penalty shoot outs and Klinnsman’s dive.

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,040 ✭✭✭✭neris

    Was Klinsmanns diving not 94?

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,381 ✭✭✭Yurt2

94 was probably the lowest-quality world cup. Remembered fondly because of Houghten / Giants Stadium etc, but the football was pish.

Semi finalists included Bulgaria and Romania, and the two teams in the final were not exactly vintage.

No, the record shows that Germany played Argentina in the ‘90 final, other than that nothing is remembered about the snore fest.

I forgot to mention that Italia ‘90 is also remembered for Gazza’s tears but as far as football is concerned forget it.

I thought Italia 90 was a great WC. You had ireland vs England, Ireland’s journey, the Naples vs north Italy and their love for maradona against their country, then in final the backlash against maradona from the Italians, the Germany Holland game and the spitting, the Argentina Brazil game and the canniga goal, the 2 semis with pen shootouts, the England story with Gaza and Lineker, the fan violence, the great cities and stadiums, the opening game with the argie player slaloming through the Cameroon players before eventually being hacked down, the Cameroon and Roger Milla story, the greatest ever World Cup song.

Yeah, it was utter **** bar Ireland being in it ( for us Irish)

The issue is never the issue; the issue is always the revolution.

The Entryism process: 1) Demand access; 2) Demand accommodation; 3) Demand a seat at the table; 4) Demand to run the table; 5) Demand to run the institution; 6) Run the institution to produce more activists and policy until they run it into the ground.

Dezzie Cahill still going on about Italia 90 on MI this morning.

Far more interested in “de Paartie” than the gayam…..yeh … roihh.

Time to let it go Cahill.

Belgium out and no surprise when you leave some of your best players at home. Divock Origi is a much better player than Michy Batshuayi, Alexis Saelemakers is miles better than de Ketelaere, who has been completely out of form, this season, they are at the same club, AC Milan.

He played Witsel in midfield, in fairness that's been his position for years, who has played centre back all season at a high level for Atletico Madrid. They've struggled at centre-back playing a 35 year old and 33 year old who are both at the end of the careers now back playing in Belgium.

If he'd used Witsel in defense then he didn't need to bring Debast, a talented teenager whose not ready yet, and could have brought Sambi Lokonga from Arsenal or Praet from Leicester. Those would have been a massive improvement on what they had in midfield.

I'd be pretty confident that Roberto Martinez will be sacked in the next three weeks.

Belgium peaked 4 years ago. They were probably the better team vs France in the semi. A golden generation of players, may never see the likes of that in their country again. They were still good 2 years ago and narrowly lost to an unstoppable at the time Italy, but 4 years ago Hazard was running the show for them. They are the equivalent of Mayo in 2010s.

Germany screwed by VAR not spotting the ball was out of play for Japans second goal, how can they make such an elementary mistake like that , completely embarrassing

Also how can addidas have technology that can prove the ball the other not didn't touch Ronaldo's head and yet don't have technology or use technology to prove a ball is out of play.

The camera angle from directly above shows that the ball stayed in play and pundits seem to agree with that now. The contentious thing seems to be that the definitive camera angle was not made available to broadcasters in a timely manner

its been published now everywhere and it looks pretty clear to me that the VAR call was correct, albeit by a couple of millimetres

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,505 ✭✭✭✭Mad_maxx

Scandalous to allow that goal for Japan

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,034 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

Well VAR did it's job, there was a few millimeters of the ball yet to cross the line.

If VAR is going to rule people a few millimeters off side and disallow goals then it can equally rule a ball being still a few millimeters in play and allow goals.

So no it was not scandalous.

I notice far less traffic on this thread as the tournament has continued.

As expected people got tired of being outraged and started watching the games.
