Can't get a part needed to pass the NCT - anyone been in similar situation?

Hi, I've been trying about 6 weeks to find an ABS sensor for my '83 Mercedes and everywhere is turning up blank including MB which usually have had anything I needed thus far.

I've been told by an MB specialist that a second hand part is out due to the fact they get destroyed removing them, and having removed mine I agree.

My NCT is out since the end of Sept and so this will also impact my insurance.

Has anyone here been in the same boat? Any thoughts?

Will my car be NCT exempt come 1 Jan '23, or will the fact that it should have had one in '22 "carry over"?

Hi yes tried them and MSL and and auto doc. Just got a reply from another mb guy I know he says 2 other customers need the same parts.

Sorry for your trouble it is sometimes a pain with old cars and getting parts.

Good news for you there is no "carry over" when your car turns 40 it will be exempt.

Of course you will not be legal on the road without a valid cert until that date.

Which ABS sensor are you looking for? Front or Rear?

If you can hold out for another 3 months you'll be all good (assuming the sensor isint a critical part!)

Being NCT exempt doesn't remove the need for the vehicle to be road worthy and a car with it's ABS disabled would be a nice excuse for insurance not to payout.

@Del2005 Unfortunately, I agree with you. I suppose if would be beyond the realm of possibility that the insurance company would be sympathetic if this was brought to their attention now, considering that most cars of this age (including my model as it was an option) would not have ABS?

The bad one is open circuit, good side 700R IIRC

EDIT 18th - this was in response to a post, which seems to be gone now?? asking what resistance the sensor is.

Not knowing the W series of your car and model I couldn't check this German parts website for the part you require .. just maybe it's listed 🤞

@noelf Many thanks for posting that for me! I already checked there and even emailed just in case I missed it. I emailed Bosch yesterday and a company in the US, MercedesSource.com (great youtube channel) - waiting for replies.

Thank you for the very kind offer! Unfortunately the old one was destroyed during the removal process (I should have checked availability before doing that) so not sure how to get dimensions, maybe measure the hole it goes into and the fixing point.

I think the way to go would be to find an existing sensor that has similar electrical characteristics from perhaps a similar era Mercedes and remove it from it's body.

I think I'll try the complete upright route but perhaps i might need to take you up at a later date?

Hi, my German is not the best (aka zero) but I did find a few without even the hole for the sensor. Did you find ones with the hole and the sensor in place. The problem is the sensor gets destroyed removing it so I need an upright with the sensor in place from a donor car.

Would you mind posting a link if you found the above?

Its a Bosch part so may have been used in other cars of the time. I believe the BMW E23 had ABS of that generation so I would check online for those also. Having owned many vintage cars such as Mercedes, Porsche, BMW and even Volvos from the 70s and 80s, a lot of the Bosch components were shared amongst those brands. Its worth a look. It will have a different part number but the specs and dimensions may be the same

Another update, the upright/sensor came the other day so I decided to test the sensor before going through the trouble of fitting it and finding it does not work.

First test was to measure resistance and compare with the good side, perfect result there.

Then I tested with a PC based oscilloscope. For those not familiar, that's a electronics test instrument that basically shows a graph of voltage over time. First pic shows the sensor and a serrated blade which is similar to the sensor wheel on the hub.

I then put a bit of paper over it to protect the sensor and rubbed the blade up and down over it and could see a signal on the scope, about 0.25 volts, second pic.
