Fantastic thunderstorm just finished here in Bangor Co Down. Terrific light show with flashes every 30 seconds and some very loud cracks of thunder - one of them set off a load of house alarms. Biblical rain with it too.

Main bulk of the rain inland now , maybe still a small chance of some off the SE, will see if the thunderstorms spread across the Northern counties later.

TORNADO WATCH ISSUED BY TORRO

Rather intense, vertically-stack low is to the SW of the Republic of Ireland this morning. A well-marked shortwave trough is rotating around the eastern flank, marked by a line of heavy rain with embedded thunderstorms. Radar presentation suggests some organised/persistent cells within and just ahead of this line, perhaps supercells. Shear, especially low-level shear, is rather impressive, suggesting the potential for both deep and low-level rotation within more discrete cells.

One or two tornadoes are possible across the Watch area through today and this evening, especially across central and southern parts of the RoI - the persistence of active thunderstorms with northward-extent is somewhat uncertain, hence the rather large area. Strong wind gusts and reasonably-large hail are possible with the more active cells, with CG lightning/heavy rain additional hazards.

Meanwhile, conditions across parts of SW England/Wales, into the Midlands/Cent S England are being monitored for a possible advisory or watch a bit later today.

Flew up the Bay of Biscay last night on the way home to Dublin and it was smooth as silk. Saw a few flashes out the window over the western coast of France and then it got a little choppy passing lands end, but considering what the forecast had said, it was not even close! Even the turbulence was fairly mild.

Some forecast, just looking through the charts and tons of shear available, CAPE shown to approach land up around 400 -500 J/kg and a bit less inland, skinny enough CAPE profile overland but better chance today of some storms moving in over land and up the country . Certainly blustery in Kerry this morning.

Will be interesting to see if we get some tornadic reports.

Thunderstorms seem to run out of steam quickly as they moved inland in Kerry / Cork today. Very heavy rain Tralee and following heavy showers.

At the stage really there isn’t any point of doing convective forecasts for Ireland.

We're only a few hours into the warning period. Is it not a bit early to call it a bust when some places are still likely to reach the warning criteria? At least allow the warning period to expire before coming to a conclusion.

From what I can see, convection is picking up over Ireland and to the south at the moment.

Couple of nice squalls blowing through but no tornados.

Was looking west towards galway from athlone and anvil wouldn't be the right word to describe the upper cloud level. More like nuclear mushroom cloud. Looked savage

It's not too dissimilar in SW England, where those storms are bearing down at, with temperatures generally around 16° - 19°
