Yeah lots of those about. Get calls from banks I've never dealt with too! Hang up and delete any messages.

@Shauna677 " Friend got scammed of €3000 from her bank account after one of those amazon prime calls"

    Ouch!

    0876969326 was the caller ID.

Funny just yesterday I was reading about legal Number Spoofing Services in USA

Make Spoofed Calls Using Any Phone Number You Want Right from Your Smartphone

I've had that call 3 or 4 times over the last few months. It's so obviously fake, I guess there are vulnerable people out there who fall for it though.

She said she couldnt explain it but before she knew what she was doing, this guy had sweet talked her into downloading an app on her phone and as he was guiding her through the process, she knew in her head something wasnt quite right. By the time she got off the phone, she realised her error. She did manage to get her money back after a week or so.

These calls have been going around for ages.

Amazon will NEVER EVER call you regarding prime membership.

The second you hear the auto voice say "amazon" hang up. The quicker you hang up, the quicker your number gets taken off their list

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78,580 ✭✭✭✭Victor

Feign concern and extreme sadness and then ask if Amazon Prime is an Autobot or Decepticon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,297 ✭✭✭walterking

No, this is what NOT to do. The longer you stay on the more calls you get as your details are kept on their lists as active numbers. Next week it will be a different "company", then another and another.

Do people still answer calls from numbers they don't recognise?

I don't get enough of these calls, I love pretending to be elderly and very slow at getting the info they want.

Great way to waste their time

Called again today. Is blocked by me, so no ringing tone , just saw it in Call Log

Normally no, but the very odd time if i am actively expecting to be called back and i don't know what the number is that will call me, i have picked up.

Most of the time my phone is set to ignore unknown numbers, but i have to turn that off occasionally.

Unfortunately some of us have jobs which mean we regularly get calls from unrecognised numbers.

I hang up as soon as it's an automated voice. But still, they come.

I had one last week and was stringing her along for near on 5 minutes, she lost the head, called me a 'fraud' and put the phone down, my good deed for the day done 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 943 ✭✭✭thegame983

I don't answer my phone unless I know the number. It's always a scam

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,122 ✭✭✭NewbridgeIR

I don't have caller ID on my landline. No harm has come to me yet from answering these calls.

If it's a spammer, I just tell them to f**k off or some variant thereof.

I get "automated" Amazon prime calls from an 087 number.

    I block it every time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,638 ✭✭✭✭ohnonotgmail

I got rid of my landlne. The only calls I got were scammers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 936 ✭✭✭mondeoman72

I had amazon call me telling me I had an issue and they noticed IP differences. I strung him along like hell, then said maybe its my VPN. Big conversation about why I hide my location. Then after 10 mins of "uncle colm" chat, I told him I knew has was a fraud so now you can Feck off.

    Just to irritate the swines.

I got two of these 'Amazon Prime' calls today. One at 8am from an 086 mobile and one at noon from a landline with a Kildare number. I used to get them every day but recently I hadn't been getting any scam calls. One particular spam call I got a few months ago was from supposedly from Eir. I repeatedly told them I didn't have Eir, the guy on the phone said it didn't matter. I played along and they tried to talk me into installing some software that would give them remote access to my computer. Eventually I said do you think I am a fool, I know what you are trying to do. The guy on the phone responded with a tirade of foul language and called me every name under the sun. I simply laughed at him and told where to go. He then hung up. Brightened up my day.

How can you go through life only answering numbers you know? Just hang up if it's a scam.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,391 ✭✭✭olestoepoke

Some scams only need to hold you on the phone to rob you, the best course of action is not to answer calls from numbers you don't recognise. I've been doing this for years and I've been getting through life just fine. If it's important they'll leave a message or call back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,122 ✭✭✭NewbridgeIR

Breakdown Assistance number is generally private when they ring back to confirm details about the tow truck. It’s no fun being stuck on the side of the road late at night without making it worse by ignoring their call.

Same for hospitals, doctors etc who may have important medical info e.g blood test results. Sure, they may leave a message but can be notoriously difficult to get when you call back.

Easier just to answer the phone….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,716 ✭✭✭✭Jim_Hodge

And I answer my phones with no loss or injury every day. Scammers are few enough but I drag their calls out as long as suits me. I could not live my life wary of answering unknown numbers and I'd miss an awful lot of genuine calls.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,566 ✭✭✭dohouch

    OK voicemail is set up.

Unanswered calls, declined calls hear this message. " I don't answer unrecognised numbers, please leave voicemail or use SMS to reach me"

Care to elaborate on how these scams that hold you on the phone to rob you work?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,391 ✭✭✭olestoepoke

By answering and staying on the line your number is gathered and sold to other scammers, ok you probably do not lose money by answering but the best thing to do according to all the experts is not answer, and definitely do not call them back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,716 ✭✭✭✭Jim_Hodge

That just gives them more time wasters to phone. A self defeating logic on their part.

A valid point, another take is it also increases the percentage of suckers who fall for their antics.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,716 ✭✭✭✭Jim_Hodge

Why sell on numbers that aren't successful and wasted your time? Sell on one's that fall for the spiel perhaps but not those who easily twig a scam. It doesn't make sense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,391 ✭✭✭olestoepoke

I'll continue to listen to the advice of the experts not anonymous posters on a forum. Who knows what new scams are invented in the future.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,716 ✭✭✭✭Jim_Hodge

Fair enough and I'll continue to not live in fear of answering a phone call.

I've noticed that EVERY time I get an Post delivery, a text appears the next day asking for a fee otherwise the delivery won't be made. Obviously dodgy as I have my parcel, so instantly deleted. But I wonder how the scammers know that I am getting an Post parcel that very day! Weird.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,638 ✭✭✭✭ohnonotgmail

That has happened to me but it was a genuine text from an post. If the text contains a link to pay then it is a scam. If it contains a tracking number and tells you to go to the An Post website to pay then it is genuine.

Yes it's a link to pay, no tracking no. etc.

I still wonder how the scammers know the exact day I got the parcel!

I have been getting a few amazon refund scam calls over the las few weeks. I usually keep them on the phone for 20-30 minutes. I pretty much know the script and how to delay the call, so it does not take too much effort on my part.

Top Tips: Get them to spell out Anydesk when they ask you to install it. Have fun using different phonetic alphabets. When they ask for the nine number code, do the family guy thing (consuela family guy phone number). If they are Indian, use offensive language that involves incest. For their culture, this is most offensive (madarchod, benchod are easy to remember).

Why do this? - Keeping them on the phone for as long as possible means they are not scamming others. It becomes less profitable for them. The operator may even eventually decide to do another 'job'.

Check out Kitboga and other scambaiters on youtube. Some of them are hilarious.

Of course, Don't actually install anything or follow their instructions!
