Charging Etiquette Question

AC is irrelevant, the same issue arises today with the triple header ESB chargers (some of which are throttled) and V2 Tesla chargers where the subsequent connection takes from the existing hooked up EV.

I don't find it irrelevant at all. I personally think AC chargers have no place on DC charging infrastructure and those that choose to use them should charge at a different AC location, of which their are a significantly higher number than DC chargers. The impact to others versus the benefit to person doing it is so low that some level of personal responsibility comes in to play for informed users. I prefer to reduce my impact on others instead of hiding behind the excuse of its the systems fault. It's no different in my mind than the person who chooses to stay charging at 95% when the rate has dropped significantly.

I think it's a bad design on the behalf of the manufacturers that sell the chargers, and a failing on behalf of the network operators that deploy them. Tritium have the right idea, I read that they refused to sell chargers which combined CCS/CHAdeMO and an AC socket and instead tell operators to stick an separate AC charger somewhere nearby.

Problem with putting the AC on a separate unit is that it only works if ESB upgrade the grid connection, otherwise it's just the same situation with more hardware

And if they're upgrading the grid connection they might as well just put in another 50kW unit instead of an AC charger

You also have to not miss your turn and end up short of charge 😉

They serve different uses, I charge at a DC charger, I park at an AC charger. Could you imagine how ridiculous it would be if a DC charger was co located with a petrol pump. You'd have one customer needing the space for 5/10 minutes and the next needing it for 30/45 minutes.

If I was at a petrol station filling Eur120 into my car and some guy comes along with a petrol can and asks can he skip in to get a fiver's worth I'd ask him to wait in the queue like everyone else.

Why would it be different for charging electric cars?

Becasue it takes longer, and the charger will deliver different amounts of electricity to different cars. And in this case the pumps are linked so as he fills his can from another pump, your pump slows to a trickle as does his making it longer for all involved than if you let him go first. THinking about EV charging in the same way as pumping petrol leads to misunderstanding how to get the best charging for your car. I do appreciate that is complex and needs understanding of how cars charge and might not be obvious to the uninitiated. Its simpler just to invoked the rule of first come first served I get that, and I can see now that understanding of the nuance of this situation is not something I should necessarily expect, nor peoples desire to understand it.

I think you were fine to ask fitz and if it was me I’d probably have left you on ahead ( understanding how it works) but I think an esb charger is probably the worst place to encounter ev noobs so I’m not surprised they said no, also the flashy car probably goes against you 😁
