Ok all - super early for this thread - but there is good reason.

This year I wanted to try a few small different things . A Friday event is a significant departure. But there were a few reasons for trying this (it should be noted it is a trial) - and it is not the intention to shift from the traditional Saturday going forward.

There are certain courses you will not get out on a Saturday - so going forward 1 Friday, opens up unusual options around the country.

Certain people work shift and have sporting commitments on a Saturday - so this is a nice nod to them.

And - to add to that - I wanted a bit more of a social aspect to this one.

    So the general preliminary plan is;

Golf in 3 balls from 1330 hrs to 1500hrs

Food from 1900 hrs - (included in price)

Drinks in clubhouse with prize giving

Walk down into Greystones village for old man pubs and golf chat.

A few considerations for this one.

    1) If you are travelling far to this one - consider where you are staying over - we really do want you to stay over. A few people have booked stuff we will chat about it over weekend. Accommodation is limited in area - but there is stuff within walking distance. Try stay near Greystones Town.

    2) If you are coming from Dublin - this would be a very unusual chance to get a Dart to golf. We will work out trolley rental etc later - I think last Dart is 2304 hrs back to City.

    3) Please do try make the social side - not obligatory - but encouraged as Greystones is a stunning little town.

    4) This event will count towards golfer of the year (if in best of).

    5) This is a golf chat safe zone - you can literally talk about golf for 9 hours straight at this event

    6) There will be 2s and as previously mentioned - a Fairway Finder (Fix TM) event rather than Long Drive - it is an event to test your driving accuracy with prizes.

So more information to follow - Seve (who is host) and I, are really looking forward to this one - nothing like a long summer evening in Dublin - when you fall asleep on the last dart from Wicklow.

Mods - no need for sticky on this till June.

You got a lot in there Fix so I won’t add to much for the moment. I think we might get the time sheet open next week so that we can gauge numbers. I will post nearer time with food options, I think it’s likely to be something like a curry or burger/ fish and chips. For anyone staying local and planning to have a few drinks, it’s quite common for people to leave their cars in the club car park overnight. It gets locked and is quite safe. About 10 minutes walk down to first pub, The Burnaby.

Course is shaping up really well and is in great condition. It’s a short course, par 69. We’ll probably be off the green tees, (there are only 2 tees, blue and green and not a lot of difference between them). It is quite tight in spots, especially on the front 9, so will be one to suit accuracy. I’ll post a bit of a guide later in the thread, but maybe it’s time to give @Kevinmarkham a shout out to show off a few of his photos 😎

Looking forward to this one. It will be nice to relax with a few pints and a chat after the round. Usually you are wolfing down the grub and getting on the road asap.

The only chance you get to socialise is Captain's night so this should be a nice chance to have a bit of craic.

    Great idea Captain and Committee.

Yes, looking forward to this one! Some of the best greens in the country.

Great idea imo, and always fun to have a few beers after a round like this.

Don't think i'll make this one unfortunately, as I have a golf stag in Waterford the weekend before, and doubt i'll be allowed out again for a while :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,622 ✭✭✭blue note

It does sound fun and hopefully I'll make it one year. This year though I have a trip to Donegal the next day before we go on holidays for a week on the Monday. The trip to Donegal is not popular at home, so adding a Friday to it would definitely not be!

    Blue note

    Ti's a mere misdemeanor.

It's best to accumulate as many as possible. It only brings the same level of ire.

Also it is of absolute importance to be able to recognise misdemeanor and off side.

    I will update you Saturday.

We'll discuss it at the weekend. But currently in my head, it reminds me of a driveable par 4. Tempting, but you know it's a terrible idea. It will be fun, but you'll regret it once you see the consequences.

Sounds like a great idea, I've already the half day booked but bookings made to be away further down South straight afterwards with SWMBO. It's the only course this year new to me so looking forward

    Ok all. (URGENT MESAGE)

We would hope to get the timesheet for this one up tomorrow evening. Note the cost of this will include food and the new Fairway Finder event. Entry to 2s is still optional - but Fairway Finder details to follow.

Again - it is hard to judge how the Friday thing will go - but Seve informs me we will target 3 balls and can move to 4 balls if needed.

There will be a social after this - and we really do want people to come if they can. The only issue is ( I knew it was bad) - but there is a real crisis getting accommodation for any purpose in Dublin / Wicklow. The cost is also typically eye watering - shocking.

If I was coming to Dublin - I'd be tapping up any relation, dead relative, old friend , J1 buddy, old partner , wanted person, for a bed or covid shed. Obviously South Dublin / Wicklow - but anywhere as the Dart will get you reasonably close.

If you want to stay close - there still is a very limited number of places at a somewhat reasonable price on Booking.com - wont necessarily be in Greystone - but spread your search a bit to a taxi ride away. Likes of Delganny , kilpedder , Newtownmountkennedy, Bray - if that is all too expensive , look for a B&B on dart line , or south county Dublin (taxi).

Seve might have a few more ideas - perhaps if someone could try Air BnB.

BUT AGAIN IF YOU WANT TO STAY OVER _ PLEASE ACT ASAP

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 667 ✭✭✭bakerbhoy

i booked Horse and Hound , Delgany back in March. There were Three other rooms available then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,185 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

Fair play bakerbhoy - your ahead of the game all year. I still have the old Irish mentality that , sure it will all work out and there is a B&B or I'll sort it out the week before.

Old Ireland, where you get a tee time, a last minute see how it goes. Is all gone, I'm kind of depressed about that.

Was told today - that there are lads that book Carne for certain weekends - 1 year in advance. That is just nuts.

OK all the time sheet is going to open for this on Thursday - about 7pm . A few things about this outing.

    1) Early start on a Friday 1330 to 1500 hrs - 9 minute gaps.

    2) we are going in 3 balls for pace and social side after

    3) Food included in price

    4) Price includes entry to Fairway Finder. See details below.

Fix's Fairway Finder Event (Greystones 2022)

    1) This is a new event and a once off - it replaces the Long Drive competition for this event only - but has a much larger novelty prize fund.

    2) 6 holes will be selected by SeveOB - 3 front - 3 back - (2 easy - 2 medium - 2 hard). He is going to research this at weekend.

    3) It is a game of honesty and if any of the ball touches fairway - it counts - you record on card number of fairways hit out of 6.

    4) If any on extreme boundary - your playing partners can call it, in or out. (without any significant delay in play)

    5) You can play any club you like - but you are perhaps sacrificing your score on hole with this approach. (interesting what holes are picked by Seve in this regard)

    6) There will be a bonus prize if anyone hits all 6 (According to the stats this is basically not possible for us) 74 % highest accuracy in USPGA tour.

    7) There will be a comedy prize for anyone who hits no fairway ( a cheap one 😂 - as could be too many)

    8) If ye all hit every fairway - I'll be on the first train to Belfast.

So that is it - hopefully a bit of fun - anyone fancy sponsoring this event - give us a PM. Either way, it is going ahead. I'll personally cover any excessive cost to society, if something odd happens ( like 10 people hitting all 6 🤣).

    (ps - A bunker - a pond - a tree - a wrong fairway (chancer) - a cart path - a tee box - a green - a provisional) is not a fairway. I don't care if you hit an electricity pole, a distance marker , a fellow boardsie - where ball ends is all that counts.

Just a little map to outline the course.

I wanted to point out a couple of places where people may get lost if you haven’t played it before. It is mostly straightforward though.

As you finish the 4th hole go straight behind the green, pathway through gorse and then take left turn to find 5th tee box

After 6th green follow path up to the left. You will come out on 7th fairway and see the first tee ahead of you. You will probably have already spotted the 7th tee box (although you may not have realised it was the 7th) is behind you as you teed off on the 1st.

After the 9th you need to follow path off the back left which leads you down past the 7th tee and into the car park. Turn left once in the car park and straight ahead you will see a water fountain at the beginning of a pathway through the trees which you will follow. At the end of the path turn right on road and go straight down the hill through the gate and turn left. Follow the path up into the corner to the 10th tee box. That’s the 18th green you are now passing.

after the 14th you will head back up towards the clubhouse to find the 15th tee. You will be crossing the 18th fairway here. Be mindful on 14th green of golfers on 18th tee and vice versa as you tee off on 18.

I’ll be back at some stage with a bit of a course guide.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,118 ✭✭✭✭Seve OB

in relation to fixes fairway finder, I have provisionally picked the 6 holes (I’d rather pick 8, we may review @FixdePitchmark ) and as he says, I’ll firm up when I play Saturday. There is one electrical pole on the 9th tee but it will take a shocker to hit it 😂

and remember the rules if you do hit electric cable/pole. Even if it finds the fairway……….. it doesn’t count, it must be replayed with no penalty.

interestingly with regards to @FixdePitchmark point no 5. Greystones is a tight and short track. Maybe playing sensible will actually benefit your score!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,185 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

You say I complicate things 😂

We are not picking the one with the electricity pole /cable so - and for pace it is 6.

Seve you never hit a fairway - so you probably are the best man to look into this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,118 ✭✭✭✭Seve OB

Lol, no I was only messing, just difficult to choose just 6 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,185 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

    I think you will find it is called Fix's 😉 - Not Seve's 🤣

With 6 fairways we will have about 180 shots - well enough to get a winner - and enough chats of is that "in or out" - and we don't want too many ball conventions and gathering on fairway.

I'd be amazed if we get 90 shots on the fairway. (we wont) - might be a nice guessing game in that.

Anyway - good point on electricity lines and why I mentioned it. Please do not pick any hole where there is a hope of hitting one - even for Roadrunner.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 667 ✭✭✭bakerbhoy

€2 sweep for nearest correct number of fairways hit without going over..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,185 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

Did - think of something like that - leave with me. Good idea (we try avoid cash) - but I'll come up with something on card for guess.

Personally, I think there should be an extra prize for anyone who hits the electricity pole on the 9th. I've seen it happen on more than one occasion. And if you do hit it, be grateful, because lord knows where your ball was heading!

Fix/Seve suggested I post some photos... so here are five from the past year. I've added a couple of tips below for what it's worth...

    Photos are of:

    • The 6th green left hand side (3rd green beyond)
    • The 6th green back to fairway
    • Uphill approach to the 7th green from the right hand side bunker
    • View back to the tee on the par-4 13th

    The 7th green at sunrise

    Tips

    1. Don't be above the flag on the 3rd. It leaves a wicked downhill putt that's almost impossible to control. As you leave the 2nd tee box, look at the 3rd green to your right and gauge the pin position.
    2. On the par-3 5th you can afford to miss right... but never left.
    3. On the par-4 6th (which I rate in the top 100 holes in Ireland!) you don't need a massive drive. The bunker down the right is a good line and just gently draw it in from there. Good luck with that because it rarely works for me. Behind the gorse down the left is a sharp hill that often kicks your ball back into the fairway. If Steve picks that as a Fairway Finder then he's just being cruel.
    4. On 7, a good drive up the hill should reveal the green to the right of the rocks. If you haven't gone far enough to see the green then walk up to the ridge and take a look. Much of the green actually sits behind the rocky outcrop but always aim for the sliver of green you can see.
    5. On the par-5 9th, unless you hit a massive drive (or the electricity pole) lay up short of the bunkers at the top of the hill. That leaves a 100-120 yard shot into a big green. There are two hidden bunkers on the left of the green.
    6. Finally, on the par-4 17th there's a decent-sized ditch across the front of the green. From much of the fairway this is not visible so you may want to lay up with your second for a pitch-and-putt simple par.
    7. Ask Seve about the mini-flags on the flagsticks, indicating whether the pin is front/middle/back, on holes when you can's see the putting surface (3, 4, 5, 7, 9... I think). I haven't a clue how it works and it is one of the most obscure systems I've ever come across. Middle of the green is always the safe play... except on the 3rd: see point 1!

Good luck. And see you there.

    You know I’m picking 6 Kevin 👹

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,012 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

Great that you're joining us Kevin, are you a member in Greystones?

6th has to be in the challenge, that hole was made for a contest like this! Have played the course three times now I think and am 0/3, actually 0/6, if you include reloads! Have missed the fairway with 3 wood, 5 and 6 iron, great hole. Will need a new strategy I think 🤔

Greystones is a great track, real thinking man's golf course (front 9 especially), don't know how Seve won the Captain's there! 😉

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,185 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

The 6th holes sounds daft for this contest ...but hey , in boards Golf society we respect all golfers and bad shots equally.

Anything that avoids the bonus prize ...I'm all in....

    Anyway ...not my call...

Each tee box will have a mark to remind you ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,118 ✭✭✭✭Seve OB

The 6th isn’t hard anymore. Well not that hard. It used to locally known as the Garvaghy Road, well it still kinda is but it is not as apt anymore. When you get to it, imagine if everything on the hill on left was gorse and also everything to the right of the path was tall dense gorse, all the way back to the back of the tee box and you only that narrow strip to navigate.I’ll snap a pic on Saturday.

Now there is loads of room. 4 iron is as much as a long hitter will need (unless strong wind in your face). There will be very few lads hitting driver here. But if you are brave enough to hit the big stick the rewards can be huge. It is certainly the hole which has cost me most money in brand new pro v’s.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 667 ✭✭✭bakerbhoy

From the flyovers on the club web site , it looks a cracking course, all about plotting your way around rather than smashing it. Has the look of the older courses , Waterford , Kilkenny come to mind. Looking forward to it, but i think it is too narrow for my game.

Yep, a member at Greystones. Been playing there since I was a kid. My grandad lived 50 yards from the 3rd (now 10th) fairway. Actually drove past his house a week ago and the bungalow has long gone. Five big houses in its place and not a practice putting green to be seen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,003 ✭✭✭Kevinmarkham

Fix has asked me to put up an exhibition of my photographs for the Boards Greystones event and I will be doing that on the day. It will be in the restaurant (upstairs) and I expect that's where you'll be eating so you'll be surrounded by prints from all over the country. They will be available to buy should anyone be interested!

    PS. Not Greystones😉

yes it's a tight track that has been putting manners on my game for over 30 years now although it is (as I mentioned earlier on) a little more forgiving nowadays. It is certainly a golf course that requires and rewards accuracy as opposed to suiting the bombers.

I would hazard a guess that this is probably the oldest club the society has ever visited with the exception of the Curragh. Opened in 1895 (127 years ago) initially as a 9 hole course with a beautiful clubhouse only a couple of minutes walk from the centre of the village. I am not sure when it became an 18 hole course but I think it was shortly after and would probably be well over 100 years ago. The original clubhouse pictured below suffered a fire in the early 1990's and we shortly after relocated to the current building, which itself is a very old manor house (maybe 100years+ I'm not sure exactly), sitting proudly atop of a hill.

In the years which followed, the front 9 was redesigned and there is no longer any trace of the old building. It was located to the left hand side of what is now the 8th fairway. The back 9 retains the original layout, although with gentle improvements here and there. Take a look at the old sign (nearly worn away now) on the big tree as you walk from the 13th Green to 14th tee box. It's funny that most of my time in Greystones has been played with the current layout, but I still often call holes by their old numbers, FFS Seve, they changed about 25 years ago! 🙄

So lots of history around the place with Ryder cup players and Irish Amateur Internationals having represented the club over the years. Take a walk around and look at the photos and memorabilia hanging around the walls. Of course there is a nice corner dedicated to Paul Dunne also. Don't miss the front lobby where the trophy cabinet is kept. I am honoured to have my name on the oldest (and many say the nicest) trophy in the club, The Residents Cup, which was apparently sponsored by the local residents over 100 years ago. Of course you might also spot my name on the wall in the main bar also 😁

So the timesheet will be going live tonight on your ClubNet App at 7pm folks. As usual we would appreciate if you can book in as early as possible so that we can gauge numbers and liaise with the club.

As Fix has mentioned, this one is a bit different being on a Friday it gives us a chance to play a course which would never be available to us if we were restricting ourselves to weekends only. Not only that, but he has also come up with the idea of a summer social element to have a bit of banter and a maybe a few pints afterward rather than all jumping back in our cars and heading home to the 4 corners of Ireland straight afterwards!

Kevins exhibition will certainly enhance the social aspect and I'm sure I speak for everyone of us when I say many thanks to Kevin for playing along. He might even sign your Hooked books if you ask him nicely 😎

So a social is no good without a bit of grub and we are very grateful to Greystones Golf Club who have given us a very special price to include food. Now I know it's impossible to please everyone, but we can't have the whole menu at our disposal, so Captain Fix has opted for a Thai Green Chicken Curry (there will also be a vegetarian option available). I know this is another first for the society so hopefully there will be no complaints 😳

Then we have Fix's Fairway Finder (which might end up costing him a fortune 😂) so we really should be set up for a cracker of a fun filled day. Remember your fee for the day includes a lot more than usual, so it really is smashing value.

For those who plan to hang around, stay over or whatever, I think the plan will be to hopefully have a few relaxed pints in the club and make the short walk (10 minutes) down to the town and see what the local publicans have to offer.

Anyone heading out early, the club restaurant will be open for lunch, or alternatively if you want to check out some of the great dining options around the village, the likes of the Happy Pear is always a popular spot.

Unfortunately Greystones is lacking in hotel accommodation but Druids Glen, The Glenview and The Wilton in Bray are all within 10 minutes drive and The Martello on Bray Seafront has been recommended to me also. Actually Bray has a good few options so you could check out the likes of booking.com or Air B&B. Newtownmountkennedy is also only a short spin away and I'm pretty sure there might be a hotel there. Please fee free to PM or text me if you want any advice or even a lift from your accommodation before or after golf. The club car park will be locked at night time and it is quite safe to leave your car there overnight.

The Pigeon House in Delgany has been recommended for Breakfast the next morning so at least a couple of us have plans to meet up there on Saturday morning.

I think that's enough for now!

    @Kevinmarkham

Kevin - can I thank you for doing that. I really wanted something a bit different for the day - hopefully you can play a few holes with us too, but understand if you can't.

Your photos are amazing - and thanks for all the years of advice and information to people here (from the very start) - You have played a big part in people discovering golf in Ireland that was unknown. It has been a massive help to me personally, in my own Irish golf discovery and a big help to the society for ideas for courses over the years.

Your book Hooked (that I seem to have given away twice) genuinely never sent me wrong. You seem to have a very similar taste in courses to myself.

Again - thanks Kevin , hopefully you can also have a few pints with us.

    Catch you there.

    Fix.

I have been looking forward to this outing since the courses and dates were released and it’s a super idea to take a day off work and play golf instead !! Captains prize nights out are always good craic because you realise you are not the only 1 that hit a bad shot or played not as good as you’d have hoped on the day and you can have a good laugh about it later…..

Fairplay to our Captain and Seve for organising the outing and getting a great rate aswell with food. Value for money these days is hard to find.

The Pictures are stunning Kevin , Hooked has been my Bible since taking up golf 10 years ago roughly and I use it to tick off what courses I’ve played and Dates, and on a very odd occasion a good score gets noted also(very odd occasion 😂)Looking forward to the exhibition. Thanks for giving up your time to set it up.

    See ye in greystones
