    Dear BWG Affinity member,

The CRU only recently finalised details of the electricity network cost changes approved by them which will be implemented by all Energy suppliers from October 1st 2025, to Sept 30th 2026.  Unfortunately, while the PSO charges are reducing, network charges are increasing this year and will impact your unit rates and standing charge from October 17th. While the “energy” element of your rate with us is fixed for 18 months the regulated network charges (non-energy) are variable and are adjusted annually in line with CRU approved changes. We have outlined the increases in the table below:

The net impact of the changes above will mean a 5% increase in your overall unit rates for the remainder of your contract, which means an approx.  €4.60 per month increase (excluding VAT, based on CRU average annual usage of 4200 kWh’s).

While we appreciate this is unwelcome news, please be assured that we have worked hard to minimise the impact of these increases and other costs of doing business on your affinity rate. The increase is less than the 7% increase applied to our variable customers in August and considerably less than the double-digit increases* of some other suppliers announced in recent weeks. This increase will be partially offset by the reduced PSO levy which is reducing by €1.29 per month from October 1st.

If you have any concerns and would like to talk to one of our advisors, please call us on 041  2149500 or email us at customersupport@flogas .ie.

Thank you for your ongoing business,

    The Flogas Team

*Bord Gais Energy increasing by 13.5% from October 14th
*Energia increasing by 12% from October 9th

    Same

However I am confused it says

If it is energy fixed, how is the unit rate going up?

My understanding of "Energy fixed" is that the rate is locked in ?

Or am I reading this all wrong?

    Just UNREAL!!!

All suppliers increase their rates, and even before those hikes Ireland was the MOST expensive in Electricity rates in EU.

At the same time the government says they dont see reason for support as the market has stabilised...

Wonder who is taking the pi$$

The communication from FloGas was really poor on this. When people signed up in April (I think that's when the new deal came out?) the wording on the site was that the rate is variable. There were very specific conditions for a rate increase, specifically, regulated network charges. They effectively reserved the right to up the charges in line with these charges.

I don't think it was clear. It was caught on this thread and a number of us called up. I thought it was quite misleading tbh. I do wonder how the CRU would interpret it tbh.

Very efficient from electric Ireland.Switched from Bord Gais electric only plan on Tuesday.welcome letter and account setup on Thursday and €75 credit in my account this morning.

It would seem that it's an increase due to the CRU increase in charges rather than an increase due to every costs.

The way I read it is that the portion of the unit rate and standing charge that is energy related is staying the same

I personally thought that when we signed up for a fixed rate that the rate that we paid to flogas for our electricity was fixed, but apparently this is not the case

I have an email from them stating it is fixed and in Bold says the rates are" Energy Fixed"

Very misleading if it is not fixed but I'll ring them and send them copy of the email

I am emailing as the BWG Affinity Offer is now available for renewal.

I have attached the rates below, I will make you aware this contract is an 18-month contract, which would end on 30/09/2026 in line with all other BWG contracts.

As you are on a 24-hour meter, I have attached the applicable rates below.

Unit Rate – 24.03 inc VAT

Annual Standing Charge - €257.38 inc VAT

I will also make you aware the rates above are energy fixed, this in turn means the standing charge/PSO Levy may be adjusted for regulatory charge changes throughout the contract term.

If you wish to renew, you can respond to this email and I will action accordingly, you will also receive a link with two free tickets to Emerald Park once your 14-day cooling off period ends.

    Kind Regards,

Dont recall seeing anything in the original fixed rate agreement with Flogas about an "energy" and "non energy" component of the unit rate.

I knew it was only energy costs that were fixed at the time of changing

Only consolation is that these network charges are hitting all suppliers.

Yeah got the email as well it's a bit Irish that the so called fixed rate we signed up for can be increased...

Checked emails i had from them and seen this at the bottom when they confirmed my plan:

Please note this is a Fixed Energy contract meaning that the energy component of the unit rate and standing charge are fixed for the duration of the contract, but regulated pass-through charges may change. If we need to adjust these rates because of regulated charge changes, we will write to you 30 days in advance of the change.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60 ✭✭Bensimp

They never stated what the energy component percentage is of the unit rate and standing charge is made of though? My understanding of the unit rate is that the unit rate for the electricity.

I wonder if this is deemed an excuse to break the contract with Flogas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 249 ✭✭stoves1

Switch from Bord Gais to Electric Ireland contract up next month.

Can it be confirmed if i sign up to electric ireland this evening that i dont have to pay the €50 exit fee to ie bord gais, contract up middle of october please?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 849 ✭✭✭mydiscworld

My dual fuel contract with Flogas is up next week. Electric Ireland working out cheapest for my usage with €85 cash back.

I note on Sept 10 Electric Ireland said no electricity rise and 4% gas decrease. Are we expecting a further update from them re the CRU price increase?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,224 ✭✭✭✭OmegaGene

I remember a few members here contacted flogas about the grey area and were told it was to allow for a pass through increase coming in October and one poster wasn’t happy and cancelled their switch

    The internet isn’t for everyone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,195 ✭✭✭John arse

Well your contract won't be up so you're certainly liable for the break fee .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 410 ✭✭Lester_Burnham

Assuming you got the email about the price increase which said that you can leave without penalty then no penalty fee.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,836 ✭✭✭bren2001

do you read anything? If the OP received the email about the price increase which allows for early exit with no penalty, then they can infact exit for free

In a press release on Sep 10th, Electric Ireland said

Residential electricity unit rates and standing charges will remain unchanged. Since November 2023, Electric Ireland has reduced residential electricity unit rates three times, delivering a cumulative reduction of up to 19.34%, and savings of up to €376 (excluding VAT and PSO levy) per annum.

So I would assume that means that it is likely that they will pass on the CRU price increase

Ahh Bord Gais and their 30 days- you got me good there,1000 apologies.

That's technically untrue as the public charging rates from their ecars sub brand have increased

Aren't we so very lucky to have competition in the market though in fairness? I mean it's not really competition in the proper sense of the word but still isn't it great?
