Shotgun slug's

Is or was there a reason shotgun slug's became only available to buy with a restricted licence.Was there a lot of deer poaching going on with them or did something else happen.

It seems a bit weird that they are not available to anyone with a licence.So back to my question what is the reason for them being "restricted"

Deemed to be more dangerous than other shells, hence moved to restricted when the category was created.

Just one of the silly things that happened during the implementation of non restricted and restricted categories.

Does that mean anyone can buy them as I thought it was only with a restricted licence you could as I see online dealers emphasising that to buy needs restricted licence.

Silly really,is not all ammunition dangerous.Are they more dangerous than a centrefire bullet or is it more to do with the word "slug's".

Can be dangerous out to 200 +/-yards,and in the US they are the most common type of ammo involved in hunting accidents.Yet they are sometimes mandated in certain states to be used only for hunting near urban areas. Here, it is more like paranoia of the "criminals and terrorists" might suddenly have an "armour piercing" round that defeats body armour!!!"🙄🙄.Yup... You've heard it all now, that a glorified musket ball will defeat Level 3 body armour and plates.

To buy slugs or buckshot you need a restricted licence for a firearm in that calibre as that type of ammo is also restricted.

I think it was a case of their use falling outside of “everyday” shotgun activity. ie a guy with a shotgun for birds or clays has no need for slugs. So anyone wanting to use them needs to apply for that permission.

You need a restricted license to buy slugs. But not a restricted firearm.

ie you could apply for a restricted license specifically to use slugs in your current shotgun. No idea if you’d be successful though

It's a shame they are not freely available as I'd say for fox under the lamp at 50/60yrds they'd be fairly devastating.

Also I know we are not ment to say it but it might just be a bit of fun shooting them because at the end of the day isn't that what shooting should be FUN.

Wouldn't a slug still injure the wearer? They might not be killed but they will be injured. Still a silly reason for them to be restricted.

You get hit by anything wearing body armour you are going to be hurting. That energy has to go somewhere. So yeah, expect some massive bruising possibly a broken rib or two, depending on where you get hit with what,and how much padding you had on behind the vest, and difficulty getting your breath back for a while. But that's a lot better than having half your innards being rearranged by a fast-moving bit of lead.

No reason you can’t do that afaik. Just need to apply with that as the reason.

The logic being people who haven’t used that reason for a firearm dont “need” access. I can see the logic tbh, as long as they were willing to approve people that made the genuine request - and not just use it as an informal ban.

Why would anyone actually need slugs in Ireland? Not legal for Deer Shooting ,unlike some states in the US.

Having 'fun' with them is beyond me!!! Can't imagine bustin' tree stumps or rocks would be much crack after a while!!

Don't think they would be very accurate for Fox Shooting at any real distance and a BB would probably be more effective up to 50 yds or so.

I'm shooting 38 years plus and never had the desire to fire a slug!!! Maybe I'm the odd ball !!!🙄

I'd also like to shoot an ak or a 50 cal, people are different,we all like different things.And yes as childish as it sounds I would love to pop a few slug's off at a few melons or pumpkins or the like.But you are entitled to think it's weird or wrong.

This got me thinking.

A .410 slug is around 100 grains, probably .380 calibre or so (anyone know exactly?) - As a slug, presumably it’s restricted.

0000 Buckshot in that same .410 - there’s four .375 balls, 80 grain each. Not restricted

Slug is defined in the law as a single projectile, so if there is any other projectile(presumably not including wad) then it does not meet the legal definition of slug.

IE you can get slug and shot rounds, with a slug followed or preceded by some smaller pellets.

In firearm terms that would be slug and shot, but legally here it would not be a slug, and so non restricted.

The funny thing is that if you fired one of the beanbag rounds used as less than lethal or similar then that would be a legal slug here, as it is a single projectile, and hence restricted.

41 Cal to be precise Closest is .45 long Colt . As they are offered in things like the Taurus Judge revolver thingy. But energy is close to a 44 magnum

From Quora The 410 fires an 109-grain slug at about 1800 fps, with about 765 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle. In comparison, a .44 Mag 230 gr standard load is at about 1380 fps, and generates about 1015 ft-lbs of energy at the muzzle.

. It's 000 or 00 Buck The former having 12 and the latter having 9 .32 cal ball in 12 GAs.A 410 load can only hold three 00 or four, depending on cartridge length 00 balls.They come out at 1500 fps muzzle energy.So not to be sneezed at.

I’m not 100%, but was prettty sure that slugs were not full gauge sized.

0000 Buck us available in 410 too. .38 cal, 4 of them but required a long cartridge.

Indeed, and I was pointing out the legal difference here between a slug(any shotgun cartridge which fires a single projectile) and the firearms tech definition of a slug.

In your example if you had a 410 shell loaded with a single round of buckshot then that would be, legally, a slug in the eyes of the law.

But loaded with 2 rounds of buckshot it wouldn't legally be defined as a slug.

The thing is; those kinds of rounds in a 410 are rather gimmicky, as the 410 Bore[rather than a gauge to be pendantic] is limited by the physical space and length you can shove into its cartridge Being max 3.5 ins by .410 in the magnum version. So a "Buck and ball load" of 3or4 massive buckshot surrounded by virtual dust shot isn't going to be much good for much when you consider that a 410s range is about half of a 12 ga

Not much of a difference, allowing for obvious things like shell size expansion and as the models like Brennecke collapse to form a better seal[What those spiral "fins" are on them for, not as though to spin them] Or shot cups being in the same category.

Completely agree they are of no real use. Seems to be aimed at the home defender rather than the hunter. Similar to those penny-shot rounds.
