Grants for rich people to buy new evs off Tesla ? That’s not worth a damn to a lot of us who can’t afford a new ev. Anyways u were going on about wear and tear on Irish roads form heavy vehicles … Shur alot of the evs are heavier ? That not concern ya anymore haha .

in regards to public space for free for cars… I genuinely haven’t a clue what u referring to there ?

"lull SUV drivers into a false sense of security"

This shows greatly how "green" propaganda tries to melt peoples brains - there is number photos on internet from sedan-vs-suv/4x4 coliisions and you dont need engineering PHD to judge security levels in such cases...

I think it’s on street parking that people are referring too as free parking for cars.

It’s a ridiculous argument IMO as there needs to be proper mix of on street fee paying , disability parking & bike parking, the shouting for one extreme or the other doesn’t work and isn't helpful the wider public.

Well street parking isn’t free in any city or town i know … not only is it not

free but at a time of inflation and extra costs , it seems the councils have decided to increase this cost too! Well in Galway and Dublin anyways …I’m sure the other councils will follow suit if haven’t done so already

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,291 ✭✭✭em_cat

I’d say they had too, with revenue lost from some of the street parking removal in lue of the out door dining and extra bicycle parking, neither of which I disagree with BTW. I just want to see a good mix.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,749 ✭✭✭LillySV

Never thought of that , the out door dining in particular took a lot of revenue from them… they making it back well though… seen loads of cars in Galway last sat morning with loads of parking tickets on their windows 😂

Pretty much no such thing as free on street parking in any city or big town.

You will get it in some small towns and of course villages.

Most cities and big towns charge for car parks too.

Where car parks are free they are mostly provided to support local businesses.

My use of the word "Advisors" was being sarcastic, Andrew. Does not matter what you call them, lobbyists or anything else, they are vested interests, and that's not good for Joe Public, and it never has been good either.

Let’s remind ourselves, in a democracy here… so SUVs are unlikely to be going anywhere…

let’s try and eradicate shît driving and shît drivers.. more of a worthwhile cause then getting all naziesque because you don’t like a car.

most of dublin has free on street parking, i'd hazard. obviously not the city centre, but plenty of suburbs which would count as big towns if they were disconnected from dublin, you can park on 90%+ of the streets for free, i suspect.

it's kinda funny though; if i want to park a car on the road outside my house (in the bike lane and bus lane) no one will bat an eyelid, even though it's illegal.

if i was to park a skip in the same place for a couple of days, i need a licence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,941 ✭✭✭✭elperello

Yes I'd say outside of the canals you would find lots of places.

Away from the centres of towns there would be less restriction too.

I was referring to city and town centres where congestion is a issue and subsequently space at a premium.

They absolutely are vested interests and you're absolutely right to be concerned about lobbying. I didn't intend to jump down your throat, just wanted to be clear about what's happening.

I’m really talking about city centre Dublin as for the fee paying.

We’re in D8 and there’s a lot free parking here to, it’s funny bc residents have complained non stop about hospital staff taking it all up so the council said they’d put in metered parking along with residents passes & guess what they said no, so now the council is systematically laying double yellows.

I know the thread is about SUVs and it would be amusing to see the look on their faces a good few that’ll turn up tomorrow thinking they can park on St James Walk for free all day.

There's no one paying for the 10 or 12 cars I can see parked on my road right now, and the same on every suburban road in the country. If motorists want to get uppity about interference, then they can start by providing their own storage facilities for their private property, instead of taking up all that public space.

Well it was and I hope it never changes especially when it causes twitter hysteria and prevents the twitter cyclists from sitting down on the road to have a salad box.

Financing of cars has probably never been cheaper.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,941 ✭✭✭✭elperello

I suppose you could argue that the parking spaces were included in the development at the design stage and subsequently priced into the houses that were sold.

Then there would be the LPT paid by the residents to cover the maintenance of the suburban road.

Of course some householders don't have cars.

I do agree though that if you have access to a driveway, you should be required to use it and be fined if you don’t. I see a lot of cars not parked in peoples drives at night when they’re home.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,941 ✭✭✭✭elperello

    Yes interest rates are low.

However cars have become increasingly expensive.

Even the second hand market where lower paid people tend to buy has seen a lot of inflation since Brexit.

I'm pretty "green", but a realist at that, but I'm one of the first to question the categorisation of an SUV.

People who worry about our environment and planet are probably in the majority of not zealots.

The nonsense of green, in quote marks, is in this age bizarrely ignorant all the same. People can't argue about the science, so lazily fall back into the rhetoric of blaming extremist green party members while simultaneously sticking their head in the sand to avoid acknowledging it's pretty mainstream now, the world over. Some motorists just love nailing themselves to the cross.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,707 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

That's the point. Not everyone has a car, some households have multiple cars. It is a public subsidy to private transport in providing free storage space for private property. We should take the Japanese approach, remove the interference in the market, and require motorists to prove that they have their own storage space before they buy a car .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,941 ✭✭✭✭elperello

Yes I agree that if someone has a private space they should use it.

However if as I suggested the on road parking was effectively paid for by the house buyers and they contribute to the maintenance would they not have some right to use it?

As for multiple cars per house, a lot of that is just life. Kid grows up get's job buys a car to get there, that sort of thing.

Where do visitors park in Japan?

When will DCC charge for street clutter and obstacles, ie; Sheffield bike stands and bike parking.

Why do cyclists expect to store their private mode of transport on footpaths for free.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,707 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

It is "just life" because we allow it to be such. We've allowed a car dominated world to emerge where the car is king, and is subsidised by everyone, including those who can't afford a car.

It doesn't really matter what happened when the estate was built 50 years ago, long before those owners bought their houses. It is public space today, and lots of it is given over as free storage for private property.

If you were on top of your argument you'd already know DCC do charge for street furniture, albeit temporarily waived at the moment.

As for Sheffield stands, don't be silly.
