How long until we see €2 a litre and will it push more to EV's faster?

The duty hasn't a notion of being added back on while the price is at it is. The duty cut is for all intents and purposes, permanent. It will increase in budgets once the "cost of living crisis" is over though.

But it'll be tricky because it's going to be very difficult for them to do it because there's always a cost of living crisis for a lot of people so these will be making noise if they try and put it back up.

Still ranging from 199.9 to 202.9 in the stations from Clarecastle to Ennis

Hardly a case that they're all still on their previous batches eh? hah

    I mean I’m not sure

Now the esso that was €2.02 is €1,87 a few hours ago.

So it is nuanced why price descreass is irrational at first glance

Applegreen in Cork city is 1.87 for petrol. Queue of maybe 10 cars at the pumps.

I paid 1.96 a litre of petrol tonight. Going down but stubbornly slow.

Just seen an increase in my neighbourhood. Only a couple of cents, from a relatively good price, but not a good sign

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,532 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Well we can safely assume it won't come down as fast as it went up :)

I'm still in Italy and have been here since mid June when it was about 2.05 for petrol where I was.

It has dropped to 178.9 today, nearly 30c in just over a month.

Brent crude is down to $96 a barrel today and refined price of diesel is down from $40 to $35.

Garages seem to be way too comfortable keeping price at the €2 mark. Current prices would be up near the €2.20 mark but for the excise cut. They really are overcharging at the moment with nobody calling them out on it.

Yeah the price of a barrel has fallen below what it was at the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. I know prices at the pumps lag significantly, but plenty of place still keeping prices well above €2.

Would the exchange rate between the euro and dollar be playing a large part too?

Also the refined price has come down from its highs but its still double / triple the norm

Possibly, eur/usd was 1.12 when the war started back in Feb. Refined diesel price was still over 20usd back in March, it's now high 30's, but I don't think the pump price was anywhere near where it's at now. They are covering other costs with the inflated pump price because they know they have a number of excuses to get away with it right now.

Italy and Germany are all using the euro, and their fuel prices seem to be dropping a lot faster.

We've become accustomed to €2/l , and the petrol stations are keeping the price there.

Amazing we're not now getting the same cogent and technically complicated arguments being pushed on here as to why the stations were obliged to increase prices in line with market movements. We're these arguments proferred by the industry to justify their actions or is it really the case that the market only works efficiently when it benefits the industry? Alternatively consumers are just mugs ripe for exploitation

Unleaded is €1.84 in Circle K on Ushers Quay in Dublin. Lowest I've seen it anywhere in a while.

Again amazing give the strong arguments constantly put forward that retailers have only a 4 to 5 cent margin on fuel.. Another urban myth or is it really the case that some garages are just so much better at procuring fuel than others.

The words cosy, cartel, and pricefixing come to mind?🤔

Indeed. I'm just seeing now that Go had an offer on their petrol and diesel today too.

Don't be surprised when one of the big players announces a 10¢ reduction across almost all is network in the next week to 10 days.

Garages now know people will pay 2 euro a litre and accept it. It will not go much lower than 1.90 again unless there's a recession.

If we saw 1.80 at the pumps now we'd think its cheap.

Town I live near in West of Ireland, nearly all the garages are at 199.9 the last couple of weeks. All the garages around this town have been well known to be gouging for years. I can't understand how they are doing so well. Maybe so many people not travelling outside it that much.

People seem to have accepted paying 10-15c a litre more than other towns, without any outcry or boycott of the cartel in place.

I was in the UK over the weekend, it seems that prices there haven't really dropped? I was in Norfolk and between 185p and 190p was the norm. Even compared to Dutch prices (filled up for 2.069 in Hook of Holland on the way home) it seemed very expensive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,633 ✭✭✭flexcon

Just back from Italy and prices are still €1.99 on some garages and then suddenly €1,85 the next.

If it is price gouging its not an Irish problem, or a particular fuel company problem.

As you say, UK is also not dropping.

Given that the oil industry has made substantially higher profits since the war erupted, we know there is price gouging going on within the industry which is not driven by higher costs. Having said that a lot of different sectors are at the same game, including the motor industry. The war has been a silver lining for some but unfortunately the consumer will always have to foot the eventual bill.

    Hi guys..

Both diesel and petrol at €1.89.9 at the Amber garage by Anglers Rest today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,722 ✭✭✭saabsaab

True enough. The high prices may be a good thing long term in making people make sensible decisions in living near their work going forward.

Being able to afford a house near where you work will also help.
