    on the flip side, what about the wnkers that have taken no deliveries within the week but have upped prices anyway?

    There's been a few very curious and recent posts trying to deflect from that very point (badly)

    There's been 100"s of reports on this behaviour, I've seen it happen with my own eyes but rather than accept it, absurd lectures on how the oil market works are thrown into the mix.

    People are not stupid, there has and will continue to be gouging going on and that's a simple fact.

    Apparently it is difficult at the mo to get a full tanker load for garages so they are getting smaller loads more often.

    Any garage that didn't get a delivery in the last week wouldn't have a drop left now with all the panic buying going on.

    ( No- I don't own a petrol station, yes- some were milking it!)

    My observation from my trip this morning out of Drogheda. Circle K on the Dublin Road is down to 1.85 for petrol but at €2 for diesel. But I’ve passed three Applegreens that are still above €2 for both. Texaco Balbriggan are at €2 for both.

    They are working on a new way of calculating motor tax.

    My guess is its going to be a formula something like this

    Weight * Annual Mileage * Emissions if its an ICE or Hybrid. An additional weighting would be applied against the emissions figure

    Weight * Annual Mileage if its an EV. Again a weighting would be applied to the weight figure, so a heavier EV would get taxed more for the same amount of mileage

    Annual Mileage would be submitted annually when renewing your tax and would be verifiable by any buyer of the car

    As I said, this is just my own personal guess as to how they might do it

    30,000KM a year costing me 300e at the moment + 120 tax, 100% night rate charges.

    Even if it doubles or triples It'll still be cheaper.

    The minerals required for the manufacture of EV batteries are in short supply around the world.

    They have to be mined and wont last for ever, e.g., Colbalt, Lithium and Nickel.

    EV cars are very expensive and not within everyone's budget when upgrading or changing cars, no matter what grants are on offer form the Govt.

    Galway - three Garages all at €2.10 for Diesel - actually an increase on yesterday morning . Just taking the piss . They have been rising every day and please don’t tell me they are getting deliveries everyday . It is so plain to see - oil rises prices go up immediately . oil falls it takes weeks for it to get to customers - Always has been the case .

    congratulations to those with electric cars . I’m delighted for you . Please note that nit everyone can buy electric due to cost or many who can’t as they have no access to home chargers.

    if you are lucky to have an electric car - you can afford to buy it - you probably own your own property and so the effects of fuels increase don’t impact as much .

    About €3.37 per 100km using my current standard rate. If night rate was used it would be around €1.50/100km

    EV costing me about €3.30 to get to 100% on night rate ... that's about 240-265km range.

    I haven't put petrol in to the PHEV in about 6 weeks as most journeys are fairly short.

    hopefully I'll have two full EVs next year when i get rid of the PHEV

    What are you driving out of interest?

    I've been comparing a new diesel i30 against something like a Leaf or Kona (62kWh or 64kWh, respectively) on HP over 5 years.

    Even at €2/L, the first 16,000KM of driving each year (or the first 80,000KM on the clock) is purely recouping the additional purchase price for the electric vehicles over the diesel, assuming night rate stays the same which it is unlikely to (granted diesel is likely to also rise further).

    Only after 16,000KM a year would I start to benefit from any actual savings in overall cost of ownership.

    My diesel is costing €8 per 100km at the moment. It's a huge investment to make to switch to EV just to cut the input costs in half - and that's assuming that fuel holds around €2 per litre long term.

    The government have got it all wrong when it comes to promoting a switch to EV. They are rewarding the wealthy with grants to purchase new EVs while penalising the poor who cannot afford to make the switch.

    Robbing the poor (carbon taxes) and giving to the rich (EV and retrofit grants) is the modus operandi of the government which have green party policies to the fore in these "schemes".

    The way to get EV uptake going is to announce a ban on the sale of diesel/petrol passenger vehicles (excl. Busses) from 2024-25 and force the market to uptake EV. In time we'll have an affordable used EV market and people can organically switch then.

    I’ve done the numbers before - EVs cost about 20% of what diesel costs to do each km. that’s €1.50-3.50 to cover 100km, versus €7-10 for diesel.

    (if you are public charging, the cost of electricity is 80% of the cost of diesel to cover the same distance).

    my last fill was €95 and i’ll do 1,000km of motorway commuting, so €9.50/100km.

    bear in mind that these high fuel costs aren’t permanent - the world would go into recession if they were

    The EV market missed a trick when it comes to "refuelling" too. All EV makers should have been forced to make a standard battery that can be easily changed out in minutes. You could then have EVs pulling into a station where the battery is swapped out for a fully charged one in the same time as it takes to refuel with petrol and diesel.

    So Tullamore this morning at 8.15 am.

    Texaco €1.99.08 Diesel

    Certa €1.75.08 Diesel

    They are a few hundred yards from each other.

    Closer to home (Texaco) €2.09 Diesel

    Keep in mind, with the exception of Certa, the other two increased their prices on Tuesday evening/Wednesday morning 🙄

    Credit were it's Due, Certa were not engaged in Gouging.

    I'd totally disagree. I've covered just shy 19,000km on EV in the last 12 months and I've had to use public charging twice. both times I was no more than 20mins charging. With fast charging and the increased charging speeds these stops for charging will reduce even further.

    I’d imagine there’s a whole pile of complexity that EV manufactures are aware of that would explain why that didn’t happen. For one, an EV battery isn’t just a pile of AAs glued together. There’s a heating/cooling system, a battery management system and probably others. They all work together so you can’t just plug out the battery and plug in a different battery with different chemistries.

    The Eu came up with a good idea with regards to universal chargers for phones, etc... they should have held EV makers to the same standard here.

    I don't think that's easily solved though. Current generation EV batteries can weigh well upwards of 200KG. You'd need a hoist along the lines of what would be needed to swap an engine block in a fuel car and then EV car design would have to be overhauled as most batteries are integrated into the floor to keep centre of gravity low.

    Have to say, I saw reports on that a few months ago and I believe it's a possible way forward. My reluctance re EV is primarily the cost of replacing a Battery (if, and I know its a big if) it failed or lost ability to fully charge.

    If I did go the EV route, I probably stick to something small, I don't have a requirement for a big vehicle and do relatively low mileage.

    It might horrorify some but Id be very interested in the new fiat 500 EV and the prices, starting at €24k very appealing.

    Don't know about anywhere else but my local Certa always has loads of people complaining on the local page. fuel quality isn't as good they say.

    So you've camped outside a forecourt 24/7 to make sure they got no delivery and observe them upping price anyway?

    If you're doing 4L per 100km then I wouldn't be complaining about fuel prices,

    The petrol I replaced with a leaf was using 7/8L per 100km , and my other petrol uses 8.5/9L per 100km both with 710e tax.
