I've a non-activated smart meter. so, if i request a d/n plan, they have to arrange a change of meter to the new smart d/n meter?

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,845 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

Yes, although you'll probably be told they can't do that a few times. A few folks here have tried it and it seems easier to get blood from the proverbial stone

Strictly speaking your supplier needs to make a request with ESBN to change the meter. It could be useful to talk to ESBN directly to confirm this can be done, although their own call staff can be a bit hit and miss as well.

At least if you have confirmation from ESBN you'll be better prepared for your supplier

Also, don't assume that because you requested the D/N plan that your supplier will change you over automatically. I did this once and they just put me on the 24 hour plan

One final thing, if you're going for a particular deal like the BWG one, it seems more reliable to change the meter then change supplier. I think a few people here have signed up to a deal, then had to change meter, and then been told the deal they signed up to wasn't available anymore

You could probably raise a ruccus and get it sorted, but the easier way seems to be to change the meter first

All of the above is great, ill add to also ring esb to confirm the supplier actually sent the d/n meter request.

How long after you got this email did it take to get the welcome letter?

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,755 ✭✭✭CoBo55

About 2 weeks in my case I think they post it when the 14 day cooling off period has elapsed.

Very high usage house with new d/n smart meter (not activated yet). Need a d/n plan with ev charging window (if one even exists). Alternatively the best value d/n rate. 20kw of batteries to load shift every night as well with a 9.8kwh solar system in place.

None of the sites seem easy to actually navigate.

Any questions (t's and c's) I would need to ask before commiting to one?

    • Fair usage?
    • Future price drops added to plan?
    • etc?

I'd say the Flogas plan above is your best bet, if you can sign up as a new customer

    Runner up is probably Energia

Go for the regular D/N plan, not the smart plan for now. You need to consider the math very carefully before going for a smart plan because there's no going back

Thank you for the reply, we appreciate it!

I assume this is the FloGas deal: Including VAT

    • 28.49 cent per kWh
    • 13.81 cent per kWh
    • €422.20 annual standing charge

That's better than what we have so not too bad. We have an annual usage of 14000kWh, I checked the T's and C's but don't see anything related to 'fair use policy' or 'units capped' etc but is it something I should query over the phone?

Also, what is the reason for the 'no going back' if you go for a smart meter plan? Is it simply a case of the usual 'making things difficult in this country for no reason' or is there more to it than that?

What’s the flogas FIT. Big system you have.

we use the same as you per year but have a 6kwp system and no battery.

Got a Flogas bill which outlines i've changed rate.

    11.33 night

    23.38 day

    Slightly higher standing charge

No breakage fee even though my contract doesn't end until May.

nice one. good to hear. Seems about as good as it gets right now for those with day/night. nearly getting back to the great energia night rate :)

Best rate on the market by a mile. Big gripe of mine is that no smart plan gets near this. You would think the providers would be doing everything possible such as attractive rates to entice everyone to switch to smart. If they don't start to introduce much better smart plans they will never get the majority to switch.

    For those in the know:

i got a smart meter in late January ‘24, i remain on Energia’s day/night tarriff, (20%off), but commenced exporting PV in February, and it is on my March bill,

does this mean, my smart meter has been effectively “activated”, and i cannot now transfer to something like BWG Flogas day/night plan ?

Energia also told me some weeks ago:

”Regarding your meter exchange, you’re correct; you will remain on your current day/night tariff until this expires then you will move onto the standard rate for day/night.

If you wish to renew your contract with Energia, you will only be able to renew with a smart tariff(MCC12/MCC16); if you change providers, they will also only be able to offer smart tariffs going forward”

I want to check if this correct, as i have received so much incorrect information in the past,

So, i am quering if what Energia is saying is accurate, that if i switch provider, i can only move, onto a smart tarriff, and a new day/night tarriff is no longer an option for me.

Seeing the FIT on your bill does not mean you are on a smart plan. You can be on a smart D/N meter and get metered export.

Plenty of people, me included, have renewed D/N plans recently with Flogas. I have a smart meter.

So I assume you can also join as a new customer and not be on a smart plan.

    Excellent, thanks for the info,

so much inaccurate information from a utility provider, and not just Energia, it seems to be commonplace, across the board.

They can sleep well at night when their EAB suggests smart rates are better. For my MIL I did the spreadsheet out, and if she load shifted the car to night time, she'd be ~€80 better off on a smart rate than the Flogas 24hour rate. For convenience she went with the 24hour rate, but i've suggested she charge the car at night now and try avoid 5-7 when not necessary. Next year i'll have some better data to judge plans against.

Energia can choose not to renew you on a day night plan, so they may be out of the running for your renewal.

But they can't move you to a smart plan when your contract is up, without your say so.

People are being renewed on the BWG deal from flogas without issue so far.

I contacted Energia today as I’ve recently had an RM108 installed. I’m on the Energia D/N 15% discounted rate.

The customer rep could not confirm to me what rates I was currently being charged, started going on about peak day and night rates, but I told him we were on the old D/N rates.

I can’t believe Energia themselves cannot tell me what I’m being charged - what chance do customers have ! Surely this breaches some part of the code of conduct rules?

Some of them are usless, but Energia do have an “Energy Expert” specialist, who i was referred to last week, and they were very clued in tbf. You could ask for them if you call again.

As for your tarriff choice, this will not have changed, you will still remain on your d/n tariff, until the contract expires, so check your most recent bill, noting, there was a 7.50 % price reduction, effective from March 1st.

I got a bill this week, i am on Urban d/n with 20% discount, i assume it is the same tarriff as youself ? Its a non smart meter day/night tarriff, and the pricing- before 20 % discount and before vat, from March 1st is,

    Day 38.30 cent

    Night 18.37 cent

Take the above rates, deduct your 15 % discount, and add 9 % vat, to get the vat inclusive discounted rate.

Standing charge per day is 74 cent + vat = 80.66 cent per day, or €294.41 annually including vat.

The Flogas BWG day/night is a little better overall, but taking the €50 exit charge from Energia, plus the export is 4 cent lower with Flogas(20 cent versus 24 cent) the overall difference is quite small, so will wait for further reductions, as Flogas is a fixed tariff rate for the year and won’t reduce, and the overall trend continues to be rates are still decreasing.

I've a Smart D/N meter, hasn't been activated but I'm able to see my usage in the ESBN portal and I'm getting metered export

With Flogas and just renewed the BWG D/N plan without any issues

I think Energia can refuse to give you a discount on their D/N plans but I don't think they can actually refuse you as a customer

the point was, they told me i could not move from them, to a d/n plan, with another supplier, which is incorrect.
