I don't know why but reading that out-of-the-blue sentence made me laugh.

    Masi to the rescue?? 😂

Eduardo isn't going to Miami anyway. He'll be at Spa that weekend.

Yeah but track inspections start early apparently, because it's a new track.

Herbie Blash can take care of that. Isn't one of those directors the Formula E guy? He's supposed to be doing Monaco this weekend.

    This too shall pass.

Some rumours going around that Latifi could be replaced mid season by Piasti.

What do you think of this?

Also rumours that Daniel Ricciardo might lose his seat in 2024 to Colton Herta.

Feenando Alonso also due to extend his contract with Alpine for another two years.

Here is what I see happening.

Alonso stays at Alpine maybe gets a win or two at the most nothing great, Daniel meanwhile has two more crap years at Mclaren and starts to look at a drive at another team with Alpine being the obvious move and with Alonsos contract just up they happily sign Daniel again as he knows most of the team having already driven for them a few years earlier and of course when Alonso leaves in two/ three years time knowing his luck Alpine finally come right and they win the drivers and Constructors with Daniel.

Of course none of that is guaranteed anything can happen in the next few years but that is one scenario I could see happening.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

If Danny Ric doesn't start making leaps in improvement I don't know why other teams would be interested.

Agreed. His final year at McLaren might be in doubt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,152 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

Yeah if he doesn't improve an start competing with Lando, he'll be limited to the back marker teams. He went to Renault on C. $20m per year. He's probably on something similar, if a bit less, at mclaren and being completely dominated by his much younger, less experienced and less expensive, teammate.

So any team that offers him a drive will only want him if he's very cheap. Could be a bargain because he knows his career is on the ropes so maybe Alpine could give him a cheeky low salary offer and he might accept to save him driving for the likes of Alfa, Haas or Williams. I don't think he's completely lost his nerve or anything, but his stock is at an all time low in his career. Another year of this and it will only be lower. A decent 2023 could put a bit of a shine on it.

Joe saward reporting that Mclaren is lining up young Colton Herta to take over from DRic in 2024, after his contract ends, if not sooner. I normally wouldn't give any credence to the notion of firing an expensive driver like Ric, but Colton Herta is a mclaren young Indy driver and he's American. So it ticks a lot of boxes for the sport and Mclaren.

His dad was an indy driver and he's the youngest ever indy winner so lots of name recognition in the US.

There's also talk of Monaco losing its lustre as the jewel in the crown of F1. Stefano Domenicali said that history is not enough and it needs good racing to stay on the calendar (he didn't say that they need to pay up to host the race, but I'm sure it was heavily implied). They threatened to move focus to the US and Las Vegas as the flagship race. So we could be shot of Monaco and have more evenings races in the US. Sounds like a good deal, even if not terribly likely to happen.

Evening races in the US are a bad thing for us right especially on the west coast of the States ? It means races at 1am on Monday mornings so far less agreeable hours for us here.

How would one go about getting tickets for the Barcelona race at this late stage? Any help appreciated

The Las Vegas race will be held on Saturday at 22:00 local time which would be 06:00 Sunday morning in Ireland.

I said it before, but it was nice watching Imola and seeing green trees and gravel traps and blue skies and so on. Felt like a "real" or traditional GP.

The night time ones are exciting and shiny and new but they are definitely a different beast. Let's hope they don't outweigh the day time races eventually!

Wouldn't mind a few daytime us ones, so we get them in the evening..

Yeah very true, lights out in Miami is 8:30pm here… perfect for a few pints down the local after dinner!

    Audi and Porsche entering F1

Stroll will sell AM I reckon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,406 ✭✭✭Oafley Jones

I still don’t understand the logic of VAG entering two teams.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,152 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

They have 2 very different businesses with very different remits. Joe Saward talked about it and said Porsche is far more profitable per unit sold so they can just make and sell engines, but Audi is much less profitable per unit sold so they need to earn their crust by buying a team and making money.

They sell to two very different markets so they can advertise both brands and benefit from the economy of scale by having greater influence in the business of F1. Makes sense to make 2 assaults on F1 instead of just 1. They enter 2 teams in other sports together so it's their approach to motorsport.

The problem is the ‘double damage’ they could cause to F1 if they leave together at some point like so many of the manufacturers have done in the past eg due to global downturn, changes to the board, boardroom schism, impatience with lack of success, change in strategy, you name it.

    Interesting times ahead.

Regarding McLaren, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. Herta will probably get a few FP1 outings this year and if Ricciardo continues to underperform then he's probably going to be one of a few drivers in consideration. Pierre Gasly for example.

I have to say Joe Saward is coming across more of a traditionalist sh*t stirrer then a credible journalist these days.

    This too shall pass.

What do you mean by 'a traditionalist sh*t stirrer'?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,894 ✭✭✭donspeekinglesh

First time a race hasn't been on a Sunday in decades.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,894 ✭✭✭donspeekinglesh

Which is what happened to LMP1 when they both pulled out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,152 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

Could happen. Mercedes is the biggest risk of that happening, followed by red bull. Ferrari is also heavily invested but won't realistically pull out.

Alpine is the only team without any additional influence through any other teams, but they're considered a legacy team so they carry more weight than a new single team.

Can't blame VAG for wanting to carry some weight and not be taken advantage of from the start. Going in as a constructor without affiliation to a bigger manufacturer, is probably not a sensible way to spend money. It's sport/business in ahich the teams make the rules to a large degree (bonkers when you think about it as a sport but makes sense when you think about it as a business). Voting power translates to competitiveness on track.

Might never happen as some of the business pages today are warning of a global slowdown and I say good bring it on if it brings the price of oil and other commodities down I am more than happy for it to happen.

So once again it looks like VAG groups timing to enter F1 might be bad and it might never happen ha.

    Peace and long life.

I mean, first of all McLaren of all teams to do a mid season switch. It's not their style, so why suggest it. Secondly they revived a Dutch Grand Prix on the back of a popular racing driver and he honestly thinks that Dominicalli would drop the home race of the current championship leader and potential next World Champion, leaving him with that eye sore in Paul Ricard or the Italian races as long as he stays at Ferrari. We all know how much pull Ferrari have, and they'll fight to protect Charles' home race. Total sh*t stirring from Saward.

    This too shall pass.

Could you link to where he said this? It's different from the things I've heard JS say.

I heard him about a month ago say that Monaco is out of contract after this year and Monaco got a great deal from Bernie which means they pay a fraction of the cost of a normal race. A new deal will likely mean a change and change generally increases the chances of a failure to agree terms. He didn't say it was likely, he did say it was a genuine possibility.

JS didn't mention Dominicalli. I referenced an article in which Dominicalli gave his view that Monaco needs better racing and history alone isn't enough to keep it on the calendar (I also said I think if they agree to pay the going rate for a race, the boring races wouldn't be a problem)

I agree that Saward is useless, but not sure I agree with the Leclerc angle on Monaco. There’s no army of Leclerc fans like the very visible Dutch contingent - instead you’ve got Ferrari fans who would mostly be Italian or global. This isn’t to diss Leclerc, it’s just a fact that Monaco simply doesn’t have the population to produce a commercially significant number of fans for a driver from that country.

Monaco does have the history and prestige that sponsors crave however so I can’t see it disappearing regardless of what drivers it produces.
