One thing I'll say in Carbery's defence is his entire time at 10 was spent with Murray inside him which probably handicapped him a bit.

Byrne got a much better platform and far better service as he had Casey inside him. I'd have liked to see what Carbery could have done with Casey inside him. You'd have seen a lot more space open up in front of him.

But he is better than Joey because he doesn’t wear red for his Provence.

Let's all find some common ground lads.

We can all agree on one thing.

    That Lavinini is some ghoul

Harry Byrne was more urgent and played flatter but his passing was cat melodeon

He seems committed to adding to his highlights reel on YouTube videos entitled 'Rugby's biggest thugs'

I wasn't talking about him specifically. Just saying you can grow up in Kildare or wherever and your family could have a D4 accent without ever living in Dublin

Is it not ‘gowl’? Halloween was last month. ;)

Joey played well but I thought he looked more comfortable at 15 than 10. That being said, he still looks like our best 10 behind Johnny. I just wonder whether 10 is the best position for his talents.

Great to have one guy as the go to back up for 2 positions when it comes to picking touring/tournament squads

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,141 ✭✭✭✭bilston

Doris or Furlong should have been MOTM, but don't let that detract from Carbery's overall performance. Comfortably the best out half performance from anyone other than Sexton in an Irish Jersey for about 5 years.

Also good to see him at 15 with Byrne at 10. Thats good outside of the box thinking by the management.

It may have been a great three weeks for Ireland. It's been an absolutely revelatory 3 weeks for Mike Catt!

It's not, but it's clearly the position we find ourselves in. So what do you suggest?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,046 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Its not great to have a player who is quality backup for 2 positions?

I honestly don't understand your question

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,499 ✭✭✭leakyboots

I think it's okay to say Carbery did well at 10 and 15... and that it's a good thing...? :)

If nothing the past two games will surely have given him some confidence for the upcoming run of club games. I'd hope to see him kick on during the Christmas period

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,113 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

Why are you quoting my response to a question rather than the initial post?

The point is that if you have a player who is the second best 10 and 15, they can only play one position at a time. So if they're on, and the first choice player in the other position goes off, you're playing third choice in that position .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,046 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

You seem pretty angry like I was contradicting you or something. I was just saying it's good he can play 2 positions like you said.

If both our 10 and 15 went off injured then I would go with Carbery at 15 like the way today ended.

But if one of either our 10 or 15 went off but not the other I would have him in first

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,113 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

I'm not angry but yeah, I did misunderstand - apologies.

Yeah, having a player with that versatility is really useful.

How annoying to be at a match and idiots in and out the whole time during the match going for pints.

3 minutes to half time and streams of people heading to the bar. That's nearly 10% of the first half they missed.

We beat them well, there was a lot of sameness about our tries. And they waltzed through our defence handily enough at times. Things went right at the right time, but the game might have been a lot closer if Arg had taken their chances.

I thought we were a bit meh, but Argentina were woejus. Great score, not a great deal to be delighted with by the performance.

Put 50 points on a tier 1 nation and we are a bit "meh" 😂

That's a poor effort from an athlete as mobile as Beirne imo. He was far too narrow to Murray and left the gap for the try scorer to run through.

What did we learn today ? ( with an eye on 2023)

Firstly another solid performance and scoreline so we are on the right track and Farrell et al have confounded many critics. Well done gents. Nicely setup for the 6 nations.

Secondly for me time to put Murray to bed. Casey night and day ahead of him, totally different tempo and between JGP and Casey we are well set there for 2023. A great servant for Irish rugby but time to move on.

Thirdly , yes Carbery kicked well but he is not looking like the aggressive on the gain line Sexton replacement. Yes Harry made mistakes when he came on but night and day difference. He is where to invest with Ross Byrne as backup should Sexton not make 2023.

Fourthly, I think hugely significant that Carbery went to 15 today and looked good there. He needs space to work in, he doesn't get space at 10 and his passing isn't good enough at 10, not an issue at 15. For me he is an ideal backup for Keenan at 15 with utility back coverage (including 10) for 2023. Leinster saw him as a 15 before he moved and we may be going full circle here ? If this is the case he needs to shift position at Munster.

Fifthly , between Porter, Furlong (clear motm for me today) and Kelleher and Sheehan we potentially have 4 world class front 5 players for 2023. Barring injury Kelleher and Sheehan will play every minute of the 2023 WC at hooker.

Sixth, Baird is worth investing in , a magnificent athletic who needs lots of game time. Could be a world class 2nd row combo with Ryan by 2023. Henderson and Beirne not a bad second string and should be fine for 2023.

You need to look further back in that passage of play to see what happened.

Looking at that clip alone you could ask why lowe wasnt marking his man and forcing the play back inside.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,046 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Night and day between the two number 10s is a bit of a stretch now in fairness. Especially considering the were playing behind different 9s.

Definitely think Murray shouldn't be considered for anything more than a solid bench option if younger lads are unavailable. Too slow with the pass and too much box kicking. It annoyed me before but looks completely out of place with current tactics

Fear not, the golden circle have had their social events and wont be long changing the rules soon outlawing drinking pints soon

    Very disappointing match.

Argentina gave up before half time.

Can’t really judge anything in the second half, between Argentina’s heads dropping and the red card, it was done and dusted out of sight with 25 minutes to go, if not earlier.

Hard to be critical of Ireland, but we didn’t use the wings enough, and kept the ball in the pack too much.

Sure, it might result in scoring tries against a fatigued team, but we should have been trying to rip them open out wide and get in behind their back line, instead of one out carries.

Disappointed with the centres, they didn’t use the ball at all, no kicks through, no skip passes out to Baloucoune for a one on one.

I wonder how they will do a review now, will all the squad be gone home tonight?

There would be a lot there to pick through. Our team looked to be better in every way, but we ended up beating them up up front, I think we lost a bit of the mojo from the Japan match.

If bully burns only did all that it would be a good outing for him.

I have no idea why people are suddenly surprised that Carbery looked better at 15 than 10, you will find a lot of people have been saying that for years.

Keenan is a quality 15 and really has been excellent since he took over the jersey but Carbery as an alternative would be fantastic. Against some opposition he is exactly what Ireland need.

With the current crop of 10s in Munster you might find Carbery been pushed to 15, I know he might not like it after moving from Leinster to Munster to play 10 but it is his best position. Plus it gets him out of the firing line which might help with those injuries woes.

I think it was fairly soon into the second half, Ireland on the attack, just inside the Argie half or nearly on the halfway line.....players breaking in all directions. Murray box kicks. Argie collected the ball and came back at Ireland.

I love the guy, he has been a fantastic player for Ireland but I think he is a bench player now. Casey or JGP starting.

Of course a system failure had happened that left us in that position. Lowe tackled the ball carrier forcing him to release the ball, he did exactly what he was meant to do. Beirne got his run wrong, crowded Murray and left a gap. It's not a huge error, but he should have trusted the outside channel and ultimately he could have been in a position to make the tackle there.
