    I was watching a video on Instagram last night about a woman driving a motorbike through France and she was paying like €16 for the toll. And she went through a fair few but they were different prices. Imagine paying €16 for a toll, madness!

    The port tunnel is 12..

    She probably went a bit further than the length of the tunnel for her 16 quid, seeing as they generally pay by distance.

    the Irish tolls are annoyingly stupid as they don’t charge enough to justify themselves. Plenty of places in the continent where you could easily ramp up €50 or more on a reasonable trip.

    I've heard that in France, they also calculate how far you've driven (they know your entry point onto the motorway system) so can calculate your average speed and add a speeding fine onto the toll if necessary - is that just idle pub talk or is it true?

    The main motorway in the Algarve is tolled at each exit so you pay for the length of it that you travel. They suggested that for the M50 a few years ago but there was uproar.

    Sounds like pub talk to me. Queuing at the toll plaza would throw off any speed calculation.

    We once got stung in Spain; arrived at an empty toll booth with no idea what to do, so drove on. Turns out we were supposed to have hit a button on a machine to give us a ticket - like you'd get in a car park here. But at least here, you can't enter the car park until you've taken your ticket. The barrier was up on the toll in Spain. Anyway, it cost us €20 at the next toll IIRC, they levied the max amount.
