Interclub 2022 eligibility

Hi guys,

Just a quick one regarding eligibility for 2022 interclub. Does anyone know if the system reverts to your lowest handicap index for this year as the counting index for interclub 2022 or does it still depend on whatever your index is on January 1st 2022?

I've had different people tell me the opposite, i was of the belief that the only reason it changed this year (counting the index an individual had on January 1st) was because the new system was introduced. I've tried golf ireland website but I can only find the information relative to 2021. Any help much appreciated

I've heard it's going to be index as at 1st January 2022. That's not from a 100% source though

Apparently golf club committees have been told in advance that it's going to be based off your January 1st, 2022 handicap. Which is madness imo because it's going to lead to some rampant handicap building.

Thanks for the replies guys. I had heard that also but was hoping that wasn't the case. I'm 3.3 and thought I was out for Bruen for 2022 but that obviously isn't the case. It's going to be open to so much blatant cheating

I can see people really trying to build handicap up in a few weeks from now once things start winding down for winter

Once winter rules, placing etc come in I assume you can't still continue to submit casual rounds for handicap?

Not to my knowledge. No guidance on 2022 cups and shields has been received by my club. Wouldn't expect to at this early stage.

This was in the communication from Golf Ireland regarding the 2021 championships:

Furthermore, there is a high likelihood that at this time next year the same analysis may produce very different data. Therefore, Golf Ireland will review the handicapping criteria outlined here at the end of the 2021 season and will communicate any changes that may be necessary for 2022 at that time.

It's literally in the rules of handicapping that preferred lies on fairways can be allowed for qualifying. And has been for some time.

Yes, in the rough as well. Model local Rule E-2 is for lifting, cleaning and replacing the ball. Model Local Rule E-3 is the 'preferred lies' rule.

Nothing has been confirmed yet. End of September would be a bit odd when qualifying competitions usually carry on until at least the end of October.

One option I've heard mentioned and which makes a lot of sense to me anyway is that the low index for the year is used as the cut off. This has a number of positives; one being that it means that inter-club players must have a minimum of 20 counting rounds and obviously their handicap based on their lowest index achieved in 2020. And it's very difficult to manipulate your low index and still have those once in a Captain's Prize blowout rounds.

Could be a lot of disappointed people. And lads with only a few counting rounds finding they're automatically out of the running. It's very hard to manipulate your low index. 😁

I’d be surprised as for the first year you’d have some whose low index is what they’ve started on. They’d need a years worth of data to make that decision IMO

My low index until very recently was from August 2020. By the time January comes around, everyone's low index will be from this year. And it will be their lowest index, not the one they started on unless they just took up golf this year. But yes, you have to get to 20 rounds before you have a low index set, so that excludes anyone under that.

Well yes, I said it a couple of times that you have to have 20 counting rounds before your low index is set. But your twenty counting rounds can be spread over more than one year, your low index can only be from the last twelve months.

Soft or hard cap has nothing to do with it other than being based off your low index. Your low index is always from the last twelve months. It also has to be an index you've played off. So if you play today and that changes your index to its lowest in the last 12 months, it won't come into effect as your low index until you play again.

Ok so say I started the year off a low index of 9 for the implementation of the WHS and have never get to that and my index rises over the course of the year to say 12 does that mean for the proposed eligibility of next year my low index would be the 9 that I played my first qualifying competition off of?

Yes. If it's an index you played off in 2021 and it's your lowest.

Not boards, but from somebody who would be connected to people in GI. It's not an outlandish suggestion since prior to WHS, it was your lowest handicap in the previous year that was the general rule. Like the Jimmy Bruen where you were ineligible if your handicap was below five during the previous calendar year.

I don't think anything is settled yet. There's a survey of clubs going on at the moment for their views on inter-club competitions for 2022 and 2023.

From the information issued by Golf Ireland. Looks decided to me, but i dont have access to the info you have so maybe they are just saying the above as a fallback so the information is there.

It's a bit odd to be honest. You can get indexes for your members for any time you want using the Handicap Index Change report. Can go back years if you want. But yeah, that did strike me at the time, but thought it might be because some competitions might require that info in that format.

If they're going with end of year indexes, they really are depending heavily on the adjustment process to weed out any... ahem... 'anomalies'. 😂

I played with a woman off the committee and it hadnt been decided but did say it was unlikely they would be able to do this year

Similar case for review of slopes and ratings, which it was agreed has some massive anomalies

If there arent, hopefully the GUI step in and hand out some proper suspensions for handicap irregularities. There was a suspension of a club in 2020, which took place for a week during lockdown when there was no golf being played. Biggest cop out ever.

hopefully home and away will be done away with and a return to 1 venue over 1 weekend.

3 options given

1. home and away same as 2021

2. neutral venue for all games

3. 1 venue over 1 weekend

Got to see survey. Not quiet what you have said. 2022 is staying much the same as this year except they have asked whether to keep the 3/2 split or if the home team has the 5 games at home. The options by you above are for 2023.

I think the home/away split is a good addition really. It’s nice to go to your home course on a summers evening to watch 2 or 3 matches. The intrigue on how things are going away from home adds to things too

Yea i think the split is good, but any time I play interclub i am away, which gets a bit tiring when you have to play practice rounds and that. Most courses were at least a half hour away. Matches arranged for midweek around 3/4pm makes for long days if working also. Be nice for a home match to be able to just pop to the club and not worry about travel.

We have a member who has rejoined us this year after a few years away from the game. He got his 3 cards in for his handicap right before we brought in the winter rules.

With regard to being eligible for teams next year, will those 3 cards be enough for him to be eligible or will he have needed more rounds.

Anyone any idea ?
