For sure a new management at senior level would probaly generate a bit of excitement give a lot of lads that were on the fringes or had bad experiences a clean slate lads might be more likely to go in to the senior set up if given the call

This "Mollycoddling" thing didn't work in past and I know Liam Cahill drew a line under that kind of silliness with Tipp. We have a few things going on here. Love them or hate them the likes of Donnelly,Mossy,BRyan & Deegan are cut out of the "Die for the Jersey" type that BCody promoted. Derek Lyng is seen as much more understanding re. players feelings etc.If fellas don't "Want it" that's their business and being an intercounty player means career,personal life etc. is sacrificed. I always tell the story of a good club hurler brought in by Cody C2002. At end of his first week Brian gives him feedback & tells him he'll see him in Kierans at 9AM on Sun.Says he to Brian"Jesus Brian thats a problem: Fri & Sat are my nights out dso I'll see you Tue". Your man actually played a bit of Jun this year at 44 years old.What a great stick man who was indeed a "Good Minor" and who's senior intercounty career lasted 1 week.

Beirne looks the part of an intercounty hurler andhopefully will commit.Marty Murphy also needs game time next year as well and both could make a big difference .

Stupid comment we all know of stories of Cody treating players like **** on the fringes of the panel who probably had more to offer and walked away we had the luxury back then of having a great panel not so now

You can’t treat young lads like crap and expect them to give you there time effort and commitment and expect them to keep coming back for more

Yes you have to be hard and fair it is elite sport and harsh calls have to be made on match day squads and training panels but the days of ruling out it’s the iron fist are long gone

You can’t be lovey dovey with players but there has to be a level of respect and honesty between players and management if lads don’t feel like there getting a fair crack of the whip they will stay well away from a county panel

I think the relevant word is “stories”. The reality is often half way between this person’s stories and the other person’s stories. Unless, we hear personally from individuals themselves, it is a story. A panel is a panel. Every player knows what is needed to move from panel to a player. They are all intelligent people. I am sure as county men, each of them understands, even if personally disappointed, that managers and selectors choose on any given day those they believe from observations at training, discussions with coaches, physios etc and from studying the opposition know the reality that hard calls have to be made. Whether that is to start, bring on or not play a player on a given day. No doubt they have to adapt to each game as it unfolds. It is a tough role. There will always be players disappointed but that is the nature of sport. Hopefully, constructive feedback encourages players to keep working towards their best selves. Whether it’s soccer, rugby, football some can step up and some despite their very best efforts might not, and if they cannot give any more, then they should be proud. As supporters we should support players, nothing more nothing less.

I agree completely my point was Cody could afford to let lads on the fringes go or move them on as the panel was so strong

Lyng or who ever the new manager might be can’t afford to over look any player even someone that maybe hadn’t made the grade a few years back everyone needs to be looked at including players over 25

We can’t go into another year of 12-13 of the same players starting a championship game like the previous few years

These are young players from the age of 19 to 23/24. Some of these players lack confidence, guidance and coaching in life as well as hurling. They might be intelligent/ they might not be, do they really know what's required until they get a taste of what is needed ? When Cody was there even some of the greats say he was a dog and gave very little feedback. Was Cody a great manager, absolutely, great motivator and speaker and keeping great players motivated. But when he did not have the squad at his disposal for his last 7 years he did not deliver an All Ireland.

It's not about "mollycoddling" as you say, it's about having respect for players. These lads trained hard all year getting very little or no game time and then were dropped a few days before an AI semi final, that's understandably going to piss lads off and they are very unlikely to want to do it again the following season. There was nothing wrong with these lads commitment or desire to play for Kilkenny but when you are discarded like that you can't blame lads for not wanting to waste their time going in for it to happen again.
