I think Kilkenny should have gone after this after the game. At the end of the day everyone deserves to have a fair shot at the All Ireland with the relevant rules in place.

I don't disagree with your first sentence but what seems to have been largely ignored is the fact that it clearly influenced how Tipp played and defended as well, they completely stood off and sat deep thinking that if we don't concede a goal we win, why else was Robert Doyle and Noel McGrath on the end line behind their Goalkeeper.

KK stats man and the scoreboard operator should both be sacked, and the umpire that put his hand up to catch the ball should be reminded of what his job actually is.

How can you say in one breath that we have no impact off the bench and then proceed to say that in the semi final we didnt use the bench?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 62 ✭✭Imeall an cearnóg

As has been pointed out numerous times already, Liam Cahill admitted he didn't know the correct score either so maybe you should be calling for sackings in Tipp before the final too in case the Tipp stats men fail to feed the main man accurate information again?

The incorrect score was also recorded by James Owens at the end of the match but at least you're admitting that the confusion affected how the game was played on the pitch.

I should have stated we have no impact or no one on the bench for the big impact positions on the field, the midfield and half forward line or is it a case that management do not trust them. To bring Killian Doyle after 68 minutes is an insult to the player and the bench, we needed an impact 10 minutes before this. This was a massive contribution to our collapse also.

Clearly the wrong score impacted the game for both teams. No explanation from croke park and no comment from the county board is ridiculous.

can’t see it. Maybe if KK were in final but a stadium full of Cork and Tipp fans would not be a good environment for him you’d imagine.

I think sending in Michael or Sean is the best option.

Very true, he's a very poor referee for sure. He blew the final whistle when a Matthew Ruth shot was in mid air on its way over the bar for a winning point against Waterford one year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,176 ✭✭✭✭Realt Dearg Sec

Was that Owens? Jesus I remember that, absolute robbery. Felt terrible for Ruth as well, who had a rough time of it as a member of the panel, and was about to have a really fantastic moment only for it to be snatched from him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 429 ✭✭jamesbond2022

Poor John Keenan was relegated to the bench for the rest of the season after referring a Munster final a few years back and letting a bit go

I doubt Owen’s will receive any sanctions

Why in the name of God would you put either of them in that kind of firing line and why would they do it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,223 ✭✭✭Charlie69

Yeah that was Owens alright, it was in a qualifier in Thurles which KK won in extra time anyway but as you say it robbed Ruth of his big moment. I've never seen it happen before or since.

Are they going to leave the vacancy empty when his name is announced ? DJ above anyone was an all time great and deserves to be mentioned, cant exactly delete him from great achievement's he achieved in the past. Its not a easy situation for anyone involved

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,132 ✭✭✭kksaints

Actually deleting him would be the easiest and best option atm.

I know everyone is talking about what the scoreboard said but my thinking is kilkenny knew they were 3 points down after the goal - then mcgraths shot is clearly waved wide, followed by molloy point to bring it back to 2.

My point is if I'm at a match and it's close and if I know what's in it with 5 minutes left, I don't need to look at the scoreboard every minute. I can use my own head and brain to work out the margin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 140 ✭✭ttowncat

In what way did james owens have the score wrong?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 692 ✭✭✭Neewollah

Some reports saying that he had a matching score to the scoreboard at full time and changed it on reflection afterwards.

That is assuming that everyone in every position on the field understood the referee didn't count the wide as a score and knew that the referee had a different correct score and the scoreboard was wrong, that players didn't make the incorrect assumption that the scoreboard had been wrong for some time and was subsequently corrected etc. etc. That's before we get to the curious situation of the referee entering the incorrect score in the score system at the end. Confusion can be expected

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,223 ✭✭✭Charlie69

Exactly, and I’ll say it again… even the management teams of both KK and Tipp thought the scoreboard was correct.

    From the Examiner Monday,

"There are doubts Brian Cody will be in attendance at the celebration of Kilkenny’s silver jubilee All-Ireland SHC winning team of 2000 in Croke Park on Sunday.

The 11-time All-Ireland winning manager has been invited along with his panel, captained by Willie O’Connor, to commemorate the 25-year anniversary of their success against Offaly, the first time Cody guided Kilkenny to the Liam MacCarthy Cup.

Since last year, managers have been introduced to the crowd along with their teams. The All-Ireland-winning bosses of 1999, Jimmy Barry-Murphy and Seán Boylan, received great acclaim at the 2024 games.

However, sources close to those organising the gathering have said Cody is expected to be out of the country and therefore unable to attend.

Apart from DJ Carey, who was man of the match in the victory over Offaly when he scored 1-4, at least one other 2000 All-Ireland winner is not expected to be able to be in attendance.

Earlier this month, Carey pleaded guilty to 10 counts of deception between 2014 and 2022 and he will be sentenced in October. It is understood Carey’s name will be read out but it is unlikely he will be represented by a family member as that practice of allowing a proxy when a former player is not in a position to take his place in the line-up in front of the Hogan Stand has been discontinued."

I know what you mean but it would be farcical to think that management wouldnt trust the bench. Stephen Donnelly was ready in front of us a few times before he eventually was brought in. Luke Hogan and Makessey could have brought an imprtus to our attack. Apart from the 2 points Mullen duidnt contribute and his touch was off. Having fresh legs for Billy Ryan and maybe John Donnelly could have changed the game. It wouldnt have taken much at that stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,742 ✭✭✭Village87

Maybe they do trust the bench, but why did it take 68 minutes to make a move. 75 minutes in an All Ireland semi final requires an unbelievable work ethic to get over the line, we are falling off a cliff with 10 minutes to go, Kilkenny players always put in an incredible shift. Players that needed to be replaced with 10 minutes remaining because they were out on there feet were, Billy Ryan, John Donnelly, Cian Kenny, well done lads but 3 fresh players will maintain our performance. Its absolutely brain dead stuff from the 90s that we are not going down this route as the last 6/7 years we are collapsing with 60 minutes gone, its not rocket science. I stated this myself on this forum before the semi final. Maybe i am wrong on this but we need a boost in energy with 10 minutes remaining.

It's definitely a trust thing though with not bringing on the subs. He has brought on or started Hogan, Donnelly, Mackessey, Walsh and Doyle in all the games so far but when the jeopardy was there and the season was on the line he didn't trust these plyers to get them over the line. It must be very disheartening for these lads as if we can see it, I've no doubt it's obvious to them also.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 770 ✭✭✭Nickindublin

It is a trust issue and its a damning verdict on the current management set up that they cant find 5 players to bring off the bench they can trust. 3 years in and not a bit of progress made. Yes we played some lovely hurling for 20 mins. But the game is 70 mins plus. I presume Lyng will get a new contract as there doesnt seem anyone else to take over bar Shefflin. I personally do believe there is an AI in this team(if they find a no6)but that time is running out fast.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 429 ✭✭jamesbond2022

Some of thoose players on the bench will walk away next year why would you bother Marty murphy and shine were injured so that would have moved a few of the subs up the pecking order but still they got no run

Any another county with a player of mackeseeys size and long range striking ability admittedly he’s not the slickest of hurlers would have thrown him on especially towards the end

Other managers are brave and make bold calls to alter the flow of the game

Similarly to last year we needed something different in the last 10 mins Owen wall was left on the bench when we needed fresh legs and pace and Luke hogan was left on the line this year

When a game is that close you have to role the dice deegan could have been thrown up front and Shane murphy or Moylan thrown in at the back

Lyng is so risk adverse it’s not even funny we ll never win an all Ireland with him so slow on the line to change

The players all wear gps so they ll have the information on who’s starting to tire as well as looking with the own eyes every other county makes changes when they are needed we seem to do the opposite all the time

Yes madness, I don't care who they brought on, it would have freshened us up for the last 10 minutes of battle. For this team to win an All Ireland you could do with replacing 4/5 backs, older lads like Reid and Deegan need to go, constantly out paced and out hurled In big matches., if Butler stays on the team he has to improve his hurling , We need pace in the forwards, not going to win without scoring goals, and need 3/4 players to make an impact off the bench. We have been saying this all year but we go down the same way again. Rinse and repeat.

Doing the same thing over is madness and Lyng has being doing that unfortunatlely. I dont know him and never met him but he doesnt inspire me on the sideline and in interviews. He certainly is not a risk taker. To me thats his personality and will never change. Its not a bad thing but in situations like we were in last year and this year he wont get you over the line. I honestly hope he makes me eat my words someday with KK.

If you can solve No 6 it will go a long way to shoring the defence up. Deegan always has a bad mistake in him and Reid is too soft at CB. There is a hurler in Butler but he has not improved under Lyng. LCB is up for the taking along with No 6.
