And how much of that scientific thinking was concentrated in Ukraine? Especially when it came to plane development, Antonov AN225 Mriya being one such example, but it was not the only plane developed either.

Imagine the response from Biden if Iran did this to Israel. He'd be sending them boat loads of weaponry.

A nation with a huge potential for greatness, but they spend it all on bullying their neighbours and making oligarchs richer. Many of the smart people left already.

But hey, the GDP graph looks good.

The belief in much of the West is that Russia has been bled enough to ensure it can't defeat Ukraine but will get a bit more and have to settle for that.

Washington is looking already at a settlement.

Yet the same long term threat is there, Ukraine losing is as existential to Europe as Israel losing and either will be a massive encouragement to aggressive totalitarian forces.

There's quite a difference between Germans (who would all be German) and Russians who are not all Russian. And indeed, carry the "Russian" name only through conquest, and have never forgotten or forgiven it. In many of the Russian Republics, ethnic Russians are not welcome, even now, and as Putin's biased mobilisation continues, its coming more and more to the fore again. There's been spirited resistance to mobilisation in some republics, and if there any revolt coming down the line, these Republics are where it will begin, far from the seat of power. German indoctrination encompasses most of the German population, they followed Hitler like a God, unlike those following Putin. Of course Putin has his hard core of followers, but it's not anything like the following Hitler had. In fact, Putin is following Hitler's playbook trying to emulate him. But once you are in Putin's system, that's it, you are trapped. And then its a case of literally kill or be killed. None the less, the non-ethnic people in the Republics are a different people.

Here is an account of the debate about whether Ukraine would've been invaded if it had kept those nukes that were left over from the collapse of the Soviet Union.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukraine_and_weapons_of_mass_destruction#Debates_about_Ukrainian_renuclearization

Those nukes wouldn't have been enough to stop the invasion and Putin wouldn't have cared about losing so many of his people in a Ukrainian nuclear strike and he probably would've nuked Kyiv in retaliation - and that's if the Ukrainians had even been willing to use a nuke in the first place!

Meanwhile, after writing the above post, as in confirmation of what I had posted, here's a part 2.

Have they not had enough western money already though?

Like, how much is going to be enough? They've got some $300 billion for this un-winnable war so far…

I think there was this fantasy idea, that western money could overwhelm the Russian military. And many people in the west (particularly the US) are very disappointed that this strategy has failed.

This war is mostly about manpower now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 461 ✭✭SoapMcTavish

Obsessed with the manpower thing. Your ruSSia, same every time - throw numbers at every issue. At least you didn't forgot to mention the US in your post … whataboutery boy.

Not obsessed, it's just very obvious to anyone who's been watching closely. Our deep pockets in the west will not win this war…

Think you mean "our deep pockets in the east …"

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,037 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

Given the fact Russia said it would be completed in a matter of days indicates it's not going great for them. Also, any reason why you're unwilling to admit the genocide aspect of Russia's invasion?

The value for money in eliminating putin's terrorists is why support from countries under threat from putin will continue.

The same Russian military that before this war kicked off was seen - by pretty much all sides too - as the second most capable in the world and likely to take Ukraine relatively quickly and with relative ease has been decidedly underwhelming when it came to results and has had to pile more and more of that "manpower" at the problem.

They didn't "get 300 billion" either, or anything like it. That's just the usual Kremlin scuttlebutt aimed at the conspiratorial slackjawed who hoover that sort of thing up. A large chunk of the Western military aid had been legacy gear mothballed and/or earmarked for scrapping. How many HIMARS did they get? A dozen? Main battle tanks? A couple of dozen? Bradleys? a hundred? Still no aircraft either.

Yet two years Russia still hasen't got air superiority and their navy is stuck in port far from the action. And Ukraine did that because of their resistance and hastily cobbled together mostly hand me downs of small amounts of Western tech in dribs and drabs, legacy Soviet kit and cheap customised drones bought from Alibaba.

And even if Russia took all of Ukraine next week, what would they have "won"? Tens of thousands Russian dead, a devastated landscape they can ill afford to rebuild, generational hate among Ukrainians who now see themselves a nation far more than before, NATO's border with Russia doubled, cut off from Europe in finance and politics and a Europe that now sees them as the enemy. Great…

You seem to be peddling quite a lot of worn out western propaganda points there buddy. It doesn't wash anymore, everyone with their eyes open can see that this extravagant (and frankly arrogant) money dump has failed to bring about the desired result on the battlefield.

The Biden administration clearly thought the Russians were ripe for the taking, if they ploughed enough money into this thing. THEY WERE WRONG. This has been a disastrous mistake from the west. And the Ukrainian leadership too.

At this point, they're just throwing more money into the fire and watching it burn…

Russia are successfully defending their new territories.

"Russia are successfully defending their new territories."

At least you admit the territories are new, and not historically belonging to your ruSSia.

Where they are committing genocide ? Yes / no ?

The amount of finance , soldiers and equipment spent by the broad west but especially The US in Ukraine is nothing compared to the amount/numbers spent in the AFGANISTAN OR Vietnamese wars. Get real man

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 60,074 Mod ✭✭✭✭Wibbs

Those "new territories? they lost half of already? Remember when Putin drank a toast declaring Kherson and Kharkiv were Forever Russia™? Until they weren't. I remember. Though at least you acknowledge Russian expansionism in these new territories. Makes a nice change.

Propaganda eh "buddy"? OK then, how many HIMARs, MBT's and Bradley's did Ukraine get according to you? Does Russia have air superiority? Nope. Is Russia's navy operating beyond their ports in the east? That would also be a nope. Has NATO's border with Russia doubled? Yep. Has all that juicy gas revenue from Europe dried up? Yep. Is the rouble internationally worthless? Another yep. Remember when the BRICS bank halted investment in Russia? Yay BRICS! Oops…

And again they didn't plough money into it. For the US what they've sent in kit represents a tiny percentage of their annual military budget. Most of which was mothballed anyway. Hell, they abandoned more of their current military kit in Afghanistan, and they threw trillions at that over twenty years and had a tiny fraction of the casualties Russia has suffered in two years and yet they're still there and still the biggest economy on the planet.

As mistakes from the West go, it's looking like a far bigger mistake for Russia.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

You are truly living in an alternative reality. Yes, it was the west that attacked, really, it was.

  • Registered Users Posts: 84 ✭✭Poon Tang

    More nonsense.

You've clearly been brainwashed by the propaganda, if you think the western financial contribution to this conflict is not a significant burden. Just take one look at the political tension in the US, and it's obvious that a nation carrying obscene levels of national debt is starting to question what exactly is being accomplished here.

Russia are not going to lose this war. Ukraine is in ruins. None of that is worth the price that's being paid, and the public are starting to wake up to this fact.

We had all the pathetic stuff, about it being better to have the Ukrainians fighting and dying rather than US soldiers. But again, people are waking up to that nonsensical rubbish too because very few people actually believe that Russia are any sort of legitimate threat to Europe or the world. You would really have to be very gullible, to swallow such lazy propaganda efforts. Sadly there are some people still trying to peddle such rubbish, because there are still a few out there deluded enough to buy into it. The numbers are shrinking rapidly though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 84 ✭✭Poon Tang

If they're so weak, why are Ukraine struggling so badly to defeat them with their rich western backers?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,433 ✭✭✭Field east

PT. You might be jumping the gun here. A war consists of a number of battles . There has been a good number of battles to date - some won by UKR and some lost by it. By the way the war is still going on so if you can hold on until it is all over before you decide who has won. In the mix when making that decision might be:-

    (1) has NATO receded back from the Ru border or advanced towards it?

    (2) has the NATO border with Ru shortened or lengthened and by how much?

    (3) has the number of buffer countries between Ru and NATO increased or decreased?

    (4) has Ukr applied to join the EU

    (5) has UKr expressed a desire to join NATO

    (6) did UKr succeed in joining either of the above?
(7)where will the border between UKr and Ru be when the WAR is over ?

;8) what will be the ‘state’ of the Ru economy when the WAR is over. It probably will be in a very, very, very POOR state but sure the Russians are used to such poverty - especially outside of the major cities and surrounding areas. Ukr will probably get massive overseas aid to build back up its economy.

Of course I am sure that there are other parameters that can be considered but the above are what came to my mind

Jebus what have I just read in last few pages

the gaz(light)prom employees are getting desperate

I guess if they don’t hit those firehose of manure spreading targets, it’s their own neck on the line next to be sent to the trenches to die for emperor Putin

Ukrainian military figures. So the actual figure is probably a number between what the US estimates and what the Ukrainians give.

PT, on the assumption that you are a very balanced and very objective individual and give careful thought to what you post here, is there any chance you will comment on all the utterances coming out of Russia re they being all very true and not of a propaganda in nature eg Putin’s statements - especially from Jan 1st 2021, what’s said on the Current Affairs programmes on RussianTV stations, statements from Lavrov (Ru minister for foreign affairs) , comments by some US politicians - Especially MTG
