The whole point of the video is not Trump but the fact that the Germans were laughing at what he was saying.

It looks like history is starting up again.

I imagine they were laughing at irony of the man saying it.

Point to note in regards to Merkel, her grip on power had been eroding for 10 years by Germain business and hardliners in her own back yard meaning she was strong-armed into dealing with Russia. I recall seeing many photos of her looking far from happy whenever she is seen with Putin. This would be 10 years back now so I am not going to spend an hour looking through internet-land for such photos. Politics is ofter a crap job that someone has to do.

Ukrainian military destroyed Pantsyr-S1 SAM at Zmiiny island- Snakes

    Google translates...

OK "Pivden" informs about what our military officers have received on the anti-aircraft missile-harmonic complex "Pantsir-S1".

The head of the exploration Budanov confirmed that anti-aircraft guns and rocket artillery installations were deployed on the island. Vin it seems that according to the objects, fire will be fired, until the island will not be fired

Bit of a leap from that to what Hob posted... maybe I'm missing something.

Now that Russia has beefed up their air defences in the Donbas and drones have a much shorter life expectancy, will this impact the effectiveness of the HIMARs when (end of month) they arrive on the frontline? How does HIMARs do target acquisition and counter artillery fire? If the US are providing intel, are they dependent on drones or do they have round the clock satellite coverage for the Donbas?

Just on sky news. A little while ago. Seems both sides are using inexperienced soldiers/people trained. More we were hearing it in regards to Russian military but seems Ukraine are doing the same on the front lines as well.

I can totally believe that Schroeder was compromised and may even have been on the Kremlin payroll, but Merkel was almost certainly doing what she thought was best for the country and for Europe. She was committed to peace and cooperation and human rights for all.

Saying that she was a facilitator for Putin's aggressive tendencies is a bit harsh. She didn't turn him into a power mad megalomaniac or modern day imperialist, he did all of that off his own bat.

It's almost like fighting a war against the Russians is a tough thing.

OF COURSE it is. The russians, want you and your kids dead or deported Mrs so they can have loyal Russians managing such fertile soil. It's not as if Zelensky may have a choice if he wants to avoid the Ukrainian populace (those left alive/not deported) saluting the USSR flag. Heartbreaking stuff, but her ire is aimed at the wrong people.

Seems there could be a massive Ukrainian assault ongoing in the east aimed at liberating Kherson at the moment. Taking advantage of the troops concentrated in the east and the end of conscript contracts on 26th. There's a media black out on everything from the east front.

Up dated story. Germany is late to the job but now the gas is been switched off they have no more excuses to drag their feet. I expect to see a considerable increase in military hardware being sent to the Ukraine very soon.

What is South Korea doing to help Ukraine, they have a massive army, with so much top gear

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,521 ✭✭✭zv2

Why didn't they put it up there alongside Kyiv where they'd have a better chance of hiding it?

It looks like history is starting up again.

Both sides are depending on conscriptions to fill the ranks, and that means it will be alot of inexperienced soldiers fighting, regardless

But when thats said,it doesnt matter how experienced you are when facing an artillery barrage or being bombed

The difference between Russia and Ukraine is that Russia keeps their mouths shut about peoples opinion and Ukraine doesnt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,139 ✭✭✭thomil

The other difference is that Ukraine at least tries to cycle its units on the front line, rather than having the same troops in the trenches all the time, something that will greatly help with knowledge transfer between "veterans" and new recruits coming out of training. Granted, that's still not a substitute for combat experience or months-long specialist training, and there are areas of the front where cycling out units will be challenging to say the least. But it doesn't hurt and in the long run, might be a deciding factor. Just ask the Kido Butai.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

Quietly backfilling Canadian arms exports to Ukraine at a deep discount apparently.

Mercantilist-first foreign policy and try to keep their head below the parapet on big-ticket geopolitical bunfights.

But yes, they could stand to be a bit more overt in their support given they are on Russia's sh*tlist, their intimate security arrangement with the US and their corporations are persona-non-grata now anyway.

Thats true, also the mobilized troops of the seperatists LPR/DPR have lost 55% of their mobilized force allready, and Putin is doing a silent mobilization in the poor regions in the east of Russia, where nobody asks questions,in case of protests elsewhere.

Ukrainian officials stated that Russian forces have already committed about 330,000 servicemen to their invasion of Ukraine without conducting partial or full-scale mobilization in Russia. Ukrainian General Staff Main Operations Deputy Chief Oleksiy Gromov stated that Russian forces grouped 150,000 servicemen into battalion tactical groups (BTGs) and other formations and involved additional 70,000 troops from air and sea elements, with the remaining personnel staffing non-combat support units.[6] Gromov noted that Russian forces committed more than 80,000 servicemen of the mobilized reserve, up to 7,000 reservists of the Russian Combat Army Reserve (BARS-2021), up to 18,000 members of the Russian National Guard (Rosguardia), and up to 8,000 troops from private military companies. Gromov did not specify if Ukrainian officials included information about forcibly mobilized servicemen in the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (DNR and LNR) in these numbers.

This means Russia have allready sent 400 000+ troops to fight against Ukraine, and it also means they have sustained heavy losses

50% of this force is in Severnodonetsk at the moment, the rest is spread to the north around Kharkiv and south around Kherson.

Ukraine is basically outnumbered in the east in both manpower and artillery but still manages to hold their lines, allthough they had to move away today and restreat further west in some places.

The very fact that Ukrainian forces are able to conduct fighting withdrawals in what seems to be good order under the level of artillery fire we're seeing in some places is remarkable. That's a tough maneuver to pull off at the best of times, and the situation in Donbas is hardly the wargames room in a military academy. Granted, we tend to only see the "good" news make it out into social media but between their ongoing high morale, working logistics, their "Artillery as a Service" approach with GIS-Arta and other news, the Ukrainians are turning out to be much more of an effective fighting force than I think even they themselves thought possible. If Ukraine had equal artillery and air assets available, Russia would be in deep, deep trouble.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

Whatever about doing what was right for Germany she certainly wasn't bothered about doing what was right for Europe. The German brass never are. Same goes for the french. They do whats right for them regardless of the implications for the smaller economies.

Not exactly much of a shocker that states will, in general, look after their own interests.

Well, the Brexit guys seemed to strongly dislike her for being too EU centred (they probably would have admired her if she had been the German nationalist you describe).

Also, she was one of those who warned in 2006 about Germany becoming too reliant on Russian energy, but received very little support domestically.

Another interesting story and if we get out of 2nd gear we might be able to do something about all that dodgy business.

Unfortunately, that is now the problem. Now that Russia has been able to bring in military hardware in big amounts they can defend their positions better. It is looking like Ukraine will need to go with the original plan and use jets. That or put those simi-long-range rocket systems to very good use. I am thinking they will push for the jets as they can do more work. what jets can they get? is the question. I must wonder if China is helping Russia with providing tech support in an increasing manner. Russia is getting help from somewhere!

it is sickening that we even have a Russian embassy in this country. A property that was purchased and maintained with blood money by a regime who deal in and export theft, torture and wholesale murder. And this is known and internationally recognised and accepted by our politicians.

if any of us here as much as stole a bar of chocolate we would face consequences if caught.

Yet this Russian regime can tear people apart limb by limb and still operate their f***ing embassy here. Sickening.

    What a sick world.

At this stage all Russian diplomats should be expelled and we should recall our own embassy. Russia is a gangster fascist dictatorship, it's not like our diplomats could do anything over there to assist Irish citizens in such a state. Anybody who stays is on their own, as they already were.

I guess that is why we are hearing mounting pessimism in those Russian vox pops on YouTube. What would even constitute a 'victory' for Russia at this point in time? They have been drawn into a horrible war of attrition.
