Can you still bring hand luggage on planes ex Belfast or Dublin. I remember at the start of this all luggage had to be checked in

Yes hand luggage is still in operation on Swiss and Ryanair flights anyways. People with half a kitchen sink in some bags.

What about Ireland. We could all meet up in the park for some pints one night for a singalong.

Perfectly sensible approach from the UK regarding travel at the moment. Better safe than sorry with these new mutations popping up.

I was just about to post regarding this. What on earth are the U.K. up to?

It seems they’re aware of a Nepal variant that WHO themselves aren’t & somehow linked it in the way the news is phrased re Portugal. As if to imply this new variant is in Portugal when it most certainly is not...

    https://twitter.com/whonepal/status/1400341162527887362?s=21

I think this is more about politics and less about travel. Aren’t the US just about to reopen borders to the UK in June also...

This is what Grant Shapps said:

“He said the emerging Nepal mutation of the Indian variant was of concern and Portugal's positivity rate has "nearly doubled since the last review".

Firstly where is the Nepal variant circulating when WHO and others says the two B1617 variants plus B117 are circulating in Nepal. If Nepal is on a mandatory quarantine list for the U.K. - how does this affect Portugal, and other locations. It all seems very shambolic.

Hold up, the Indian mutation has further mutated in the Nepali mutation?
If that further mutates into the Sherpa sub variant we may as well give up, it will be the fittest virus of all.

If you can prove you are travelling south, can you bypass the need for 2 PCR tests pre ordered? Orange lists you need to buy a set of PCR tests before you board the plane on your return

Yea; you specify that you are not remaining in the U.K. you can also buy self administered kits from Randox which you can take on holiday and send to them for analysis for return if PCR required.

How much testing does the WHO do ? They become informed by countries who discover them and receive data on them.

Positive tests reportedly among those returning from champions league final. Attributed in some reports as relating to day trippers. This would be ironic as it reportedly showed up on day 2 tests which would indicate that they caught it 5 days earlier, ie before going to Portugal for their day trip. Of course, none of this can be proven.

Except nobody has reported it to WHO and even Nepal have said there's no such variant.

That cant be right surely. How do they know the sample was taken properly or from the person?

Yes it is true. Randox will post you a test to do at home, Ryanair advertise it when you book with them. You do the test at home or wherever and return it to them, either to one of their centres in person or by courier!

"Regulations regarding COVID-19 testing for travel in Ireland mean that a certified collection officer has to take your sample, so our home sample collection kit is not applicable."

So no good for returning here then and seems more hassle anyway. Is it just the UK accepting these tests I wonder?

It is 100% politics. You only have to listen to Hancock and Shapps etc on Andrew Marr on a Sunday morning to confirm that....spouting on about how great their staycations are going to be. The government does not want people going off on holidays overseas and spending money in the EU. And grasping every excuse to achieve that aim
