Very interesting how it is more difficult to locate the number of new cases tonight. No front page headline?

How unusual. You'd think they would want to share the half good news.......

    No not this time.

Is Bezos the new Bill Gates or something controlling the world? Do you think he is controlling NPHET? Whats the link with Ireland?

No I don't think that. I was responding to a poster who was looking for evidence of the harmful longterm effects of lockdowns. I gave 2 examples. Didnt know it had to specifically relate to Ireland although given that Ireland is part of the world it is also relevant IMO. People who are calling for further restrictions, in ireland and elsewhere are contributing to more people around the world being pushed into poverty and hunger. Fact

    It's not that complicated. Jaysus.

If the cases get down to 100 a day with the bright evenings and warmer weather coming and hospital numbers at flu like levels surely they cant keep up this farce.

What's important is that he got to brief the FG party members first. Can't be giving the proles the news. No, it's got to go to the party first and by default the media (usually the Irish Times) for a little bit of spinjitzu.

Honestly, we could go to level 3.5 in the morning and cases would continue to decrease, just like in October. The hospitals are no longer at or anywhere near capacity and doing a great job. Waiting to get to single digits cases before lifting any of the level 5 restrictions would be mental stuff. Even push it out to April is bananas.

Grim. Trying to be optimistic in that these maps can change and have done previously with things opening sooner than planned due to falling numbers etc, This is the best we can hope for otherwise it will feel like forever to get to do anything. Wonder where they’ll put intercounty and nationwide travel.

You would think so but not they way they're talking things down

Slow painful careful cautious reopening which basically means months upon months of high level restrictions

That would be one thing if we knew dates for their reopening 'plan' or the metric to work towards but they won't give dates and they won't give the metric either

Looking like after June Bank Holiday at the earliest and more than likely July

Nah couldn't be open on a Bank Holiday

Including Easter this year we have had restaurants not pubs open for 1 Bank Holiday out of 9 and it will be 1 out of 11 as nothing will be open in May or June either

    Yes that's true

People will travel alright but at this stage very hard to see any hospitality being up

The longer the painful slow relaxation of restrictions goes on the more people are going to take a chance and ignore restrictions on travel and meeting friends, family, partners both within their own counties and in other counties

You'll have within own county travel first but definitely not before May imo

Consider that we have only had intercounty travel for 8 days over Christmas since October

Intercounty will be one of the last things the government and NPHET allow

The Government are out of their minds if they think people will comply with this for much longer.

The figures are going to decrease week on week...the evenings getting longer, the weather should improve...we've been locked down now since 3rd week in Oct, with a brief reprieve in Dec.

The people have done enough, vaccine rollouts, hospital outbreaks, care home outbreaks are not the fault of the vast vast majority of us.

    The health problems are mounting.

IF only we had a media outlet to break ranks with the others, like what we are seeing in the UK.

Ridiculous. It was only a few weeks ago when Leo was on with Claire Byrne and said schools would be reopening throughout Feb and into March. Now it’s March and into April. That pushes construction into late April/May and non essential retail into May/June. What’s worse is that there seems to be just a casual acceptance from the public on being fed these blatant lies. No questions, no criticisms.. just shrug the shoulders and move on.

i wouldn't bother pjohnson is the type of person to play obtuse and pretend you're making some bizarre statement when it's patently obvious that you're saying multinational corporations have had a good year off the back of small enterprises.

Is Leo trying to turn people against the government? What is the point of this constant pushing back of reopening despite declining cases?

We opened at Christmas despite numbers going up now we're talking about keeping closed for another 3 or 4 months despite numbers going down and more and more vaccines becoming available. What are we playing at?

The warning signs were fully evident last Summer that this would go on long term this year.

The multi nationals are falsely inflating GDP so the books looks good for now and the worlds most severe restrictions will continue until they don’t.

Was in an electrical wholesaler today and the chap behind the counter said it’s been dead and he can’t wait for March until construction reopens.

He will be waiting by the sounds of things.

The fact Ireland was the only country in the globe to close construction should have rang alarm bells weeks ago regarding our reopening plans

The reason the lifting of restrictions is being put back is because of the delays in vaccinations for the over 70s who obviously are the most vulnerable which is fair enough. They don't expect to have them fully vaccinated until May.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,168 ✭✭✭ypres5

I thought the closing of construction was a reaction to the criticism for opening over Christmas and the following rise in cases. In fairness you and some others on here called it right.

I can still understand the need for restrictions at the moment but things are moving the right way and talk of keeping the same restrictions until April or May regardless of case numbers is just really, really disheartening.

the government seem to have the same objective they had last summer and that's to get cases as low as possible and after that they haven't a ****ing clue. so we get to spend this summer again with low case numbers listening to the same 'we re not where we need to be yet' **** that was old the first time around. the only one hope we have is the rest of the continent embarrassing the government into moving quicker, if it's even possible to embarrass them in the first place

Not a good enough reason to delay something as essential as construction especially with all indicators falling

    One delay shouldn't cause another

Leo takes his lead from focus groups and spin doctors. If he thinks more severe restrictions will make him look good, he'll go with that. If it changes the following week, he'll flip-flop.

If hospitality is kept closed when the weather starts to get better it’s going to be shebeens galore.
I’m starting on my one in my work lock up next week, might as well use it for something as I will have f all work for most of the year

So could the absolute madness of the continued restrictions result in a legitimate protest by the public who would never have considered it until now? I would 100% attend a protest that had legitimate support.

And twitter...he is intellectually shallow although can be superficially impressive.

He got elected on the 6th count in his constituency in the last election, a humiliation by any standard along with leading Fg to their poorest performance in some time....he is not an effective leader, this past year he has been a disaster apart from his earlier emotive speeches that then and now seem hollow.

I couldn't imagine Charlie Haughey conceding so much power and control to health bureaucrats...and trust me it sickens me to even concede that!

That time is near, April is my threshold. I've a lot of living to catch up on, and won't sacrifice more for Leo the jive merchant and his circle of nodding donkeys. We're all in this together once the economy reopens and my job is reinstated.
