I disagree. If somebody is setting up a family and charging a certain amount of money, then it should be clear to everyone what you are agreeing to. Setting up a family takes all of minutes work, you shouldn't profit off this.

If somebody was using boards to set up a family, charing Irish rates but able to get the family set up in a different country then they are screwing boardsies out of money and could also be in a position where they need to move country again in a few weeks or months. Shouldn't be tolerated.

I'm waiting in the wings to see if my backup revolut payment goes through on the 15th. I have Apple Turkey ready to go if it fails. Getting stung by paysultan for the virtual credit card has taken the good out of it for me. At least the Apple method doesn't subject you to the VPN lottery which looks to be the weakest link in the process now.

I think sharing is a great idea and I have set up and run several groups, successfully.

It's not a matter of a couple of minutes and there are (minor) costs that members couldn't and shouldn't be expected to carry.
There are run in and run out periods where people come and go at various times but the sub still needs to be paid in full. Secondly there is a currency risk, where the base price changes but the annual sub has just been split as if everything was priced in euro. Finally the family manager is stuck with unforeseen price increases during the year.
Every time there is bad news with these schemes there is an immediate bleating of "looking for a place in a family".
What that really means is I am too lazy or cute to set up and run my own group, you take the risks and no reward, for me.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the groups I set up, saved money and made some good buddy's out of our informal groups, but for the reasons above I have terminated them all, at the end of their terms.

As I originally said, using a group should be based whether it saves you money, not what the manager is taking a modest margin.

What boards used to be : "I have an idea, lets club together so that we can all save some money"

What boards is today: "I have an idea, lets club together so that you can save a bit of money and I get something for free or maybe even make a profit and if someone points out the actual cost well fcuk you begrudgers for making my actions transparent"

If you are charging Irish prices then take the sub from Ireland, take a year's payment up front, don't seem like any risks involved there. Do Irish prices change often?

What I would take issue with is someone making a couple hundred euros charging Irish prices and taking the sub out in Turkey without the other members knowing. I think that bad form and they don't belong on the bargain thread.

I was just letting folk know they can check their account if they think they need to. That's all I will say on the matter

Thats in interesting statement. Do you feel you have been wronged?

I have no issue whether or not anyone in your family group is making a profit, getting a free sub etc. However I do take exception when people fail to disclose the relevant facts in a financial transaction for their own gain.

But to your credit you did also amend your pricing once this was pointed out. Many people would not of and this also should be acknowledged by posters here.

IMHO there's a simple principle of fairness & transparency.

People are entitled to charge as they wish, but only on the proviso there is full disclosure, so that the purchaser can make an informed decision.

This is exactly why we have fair trading laws, so that business cant take unfair advantage of consumers in pursuit of profit.

Rubbish. I've set up a YouTube family here, took no time at all. It means I get 2 youtube accounts and only have to pay €4.33 per account. The other 4 people pay the same (well we did it annually, but works out the same).

I have a reminder set for 11 months from now to see if the guys want to stay in.

    That's it.

I don't see how that minimal work should allow me use boards as a means to make some money for myself.

As stated previously and by others, the ethos of boards would have always been that everyone shares the benefit. Anybody trying to profit would have been shut down super quick.

    Good for you!!!

Who carries the can when the endless counter measures NF/Spotify/YT take countermeasures, mid term?
This thread is making me more glad, I got out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,828 ✭✭✭savemejebus

Nobody carries the can, everyone takes the same risk, they know what they're getting into. If it fails it fails.

If you've taken, and paid, a year in advance then everyone loses. If you've taken a year in advance and are paying monthly then refunding unspent funds is not carrying the can.

There is no need to make things needlessy complicated or play martyr.

I’ve looked at previous threads, I have questions.

Are YouTube clamping down on those using YouTube family outside the country it was purchased from?

Does that mean I have to buy YouTube at Irish prices?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,984 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Nobody. It's an Irish account, paid up front but charged monthly. If fees go up, the others chip in. If it cancels for some reason, I refund.

Poland sub was cancelled and managed to just sign up to Belarus just now.

Why aren't people using the Turkey method via iTunes? It's fail safe, no VPN and unless YouTube want to have a major bust up with Apple is going to continue that way. I gave my son the guide that's on here and he's delighted, it's working perfectly.

On a related note I see some of the folks over on the cheap netflix thread have been getting scalped buying Turkish Netflix vouchers so be careful of the fees involved when buying.

I was wary of doing it because it sounded like hassle. In reality it was a 5 min job to get set up, working with absolutely no hassle.

Yesterday I checked my Turkey Apple credit, realised it was running short and bought a new batch. 2 mins work to get me another 8 months of Family for €38.

I dont do it because i dont have an apple device.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,372 ✭✭✭ooter

I'm in the same boat, can it be done without an apple device?

A cheap iPhone from cex would do, plenty of advice here on how old the phone can be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,460 ✭✭✭✭Kolido

If you know someone who would let you use their apple device for about 10 minutes to load your itune account with credit and sub to youtube, you could add enough credit for a year so you dont need to do it often

The other parts can be done on an android, pc like creating an apple id and buying the itunes credit

I have an old iPhone 6s but no charger would that do?

I'm trying to add some people to my family, and they're getting an error saying they don't reside in the same country.

What's the work around on this?

  • Moderators, Regional South East Moderators Posts: 9,205 Mod ✭✭✭✭Aquos76

You should have created your google family prior to taking out your family youtube account, I dont think there is any way around it I'm afraid

  • Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 11,725 ✭✭✭✭Black_Knight

Cancel the YouTube family account and set it back up again with a new family?

Yeah, that should work, a new email address, create a new family, and then sign up to youtube family
