Thank god they’re sticking with a disc drive model and disc add on. Even if disc media is becoming an ever smaller section of the market, I think it’ll be really unfortunate when they’re phased out completely. So much good stuff most easily available via disc (films and games), and there’ll be less competitive pricing in a purely digital ecosystem.

Sorry to ask a silly question but can you get one that takes ‘old fashioned’ discs and also allows digital buys/subscriptions?

Or are they separate beasts these days?

Sorry I last played a SNES in the 90’s but Santa might need to bring a PS this year so I’m doing some panic research and don’t want to buy the wrong one by relying on smiths catalogue

    any tips welcome.

Yep the disc model allows both discs and digital. 😊

If buying it as a present I would highly recommend the disc version.

Thanks. Can I take advantage and ask is there a basic PS account I would subscribe to and then just download games when I want to buy more?

Also is it like Netflix /streaming as in do you only keep the game if you are still subscribed ?

So just under €600 now if you want a disc drive and it to stand vertically

I presume the disc drive isn’t detachable on the disc model?

It is, both consoles are identical. The disc version just comes with the drive preinstalled, you won't have the faceplate for use without the drive attached though.

I wonder would the disk drive work on the current digital machine?

The slim saves Sony money. They make one console and at the end of the production line they bang on a disc drive or not depending on demand. They've cut the weight and shipping costs significantly, not just with this model but progressively since launch.

It's 3 years old, they've sold 40 million units or more by now, with the cost cuts and economies of scale it should be cheaper.

There was a deal going around recently for a PS5 disc model with EA football game for 499. I'd hope anyone who still wants a disc model snapped that up. Still a few available around the place.

And RRP still more than at launch, bit crazy

Bargain. Saw an even faster Kingston FURY Renegade 2tb for £83 at midnight.

They were all snapped up very fast bundled with QIVYNSRY M.2 Heatsink for £8. Some great drives getting discounts.

    No problem, and of course.

PlayStation Plus is a yearly subscription. The first tier (extra) gets you a couple of games a month where was the second tier (essential) gives you a large library of games to pick from (as well as the monthly games) so would recommend that tier. There's a third tier which includes older games but it's not a great offering.

And yes, you only keep them as long as you subscribe.

Mad that the vertical stand is an extra even though the display picture is of the console standing vertical.

Id say very unlikely. Slim has 30% less volume.

Even if you could stick this drive on the side of the current PS5 Digital it doesnt look like there are plate(s) to cover that combo.

The detachable drive is an interesting idea, should cut production costs for them essentially having one SKU. Also cuts packaging size, reducing shipping costs. I presume as the console is 3 years old the production costs have already dropped.

Just thinking, does the separate drive come with a cover to make the digital version look like the disc version?

There is now a check for update option in the game library section

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,529 ✭✭✭✭Varik

    Can't see it.

There the option for games on the main star bar but no sign in the library. Only thing I see is the new add to list stuff.

I think it's rolling out to people gradually. I could see the option myself

For that PlayStation stars thing, there's a couple of handy challenges to get 50 points (50 cent worth) each. You get points when you buy digital games as well and you can trade points for games or psn credit so i have been tapping away at the handy ones until i can get 5 euro credit, every penny helps.

Anyway, 3 current challenges giving points, one you have to buy a game on the list, already owning it doesn't count apparently. The other 2 are download and play a plus essential game and download and play a multiplayer game. The multiplayer list includes back 4 blood which is a plus game so i just downloaded one of the new essential games and back for blood, started the apps and the challenges pop. Minimum effort of downloading a game and starting it.

Edit: was asking about Black Friday deals etc. but we decided to just go out and buy it! Took ages to set up but all done now and no hassles on Christmas morning. Console really is amazing. Going to be a long two months for my son 😁

The option to check for updates on PS5 games in your Game Library is apparently active for all now. Sony has quietly rolled out the feature without a firmware update, but if you open your library and select the Options button, you should see the prompt to check for updates to games.

That said, a check for updates to all games button is still sadly not there.

Does it not automatically update any installed games? Pretty sure mine does...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,065 ✭✭✭sniper_samurai

It only does an overnight check for updates and not an update when a patch becomes available, and this requires a PS+ subscription for some reason.

The console will also check for updates upon start up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,462 ✭✭✭✭Exclamation Marc

The games in your home screen (across the main bar) are/were automatically updated but the games in your library weren't checked for updates unless you tried to play them.

It's still not great as you can't just check for updates to all but at least if there's a game that you know received a large update, you can choose to update it without having to open it and add it to your home screen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,545 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

Probably me just having a handful of games installed so. I really only have games I'm currently playing installed as I'd get too distracted otherwise and they all update automatically when I power on the PS5. I shut down instead of rest mode, save energy and all that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,462 ✭✭✭✭Exclamation Marc

You're better off with that approach. Once a game falls off my Home screen it falls into a black hole!

Ditto, so Sony need to pull the finger out and bring back XMB folders!
