Played a few rounds of 2042, breakthrough is chaotic, can just sit in the sky with Caspers drone and get hundreds of assists. Fun for the team. Tons still to unlock but find it a bit clunky trying to navigate rewards/progression. Not a fan of 3rd person takedown. Used to enjoy melee a lot more in the older games.

you'd miss the scoreboard, stats and server browser alright. Hard to know how much they can add post-launch. Fully appreciate it's probably harder make a game at home than in the office.

Did one round of Hazard Zone. It's a no from me.

    Must dip into Portal now.

Played about 2hrs of the trial. Portal is brilliant and definitely got hit by the nostalgia going into Arica Harbour.

Conquest feels very chaotic but maybe that’s the idea? Just felt with that many players there was no structure or team work. I suppose it’s very early to be expecting teamwork right now.

Dying a awful lot but it’s probably down to me being used to other shooters and there recoil patterns. Still don’t know if I’ll pick it up right away or wait another month.

    No scoreboard is absolutely hilarious

I didnt find the movement clunky at all in the beta or in release, any bugs i had in the beta seem to be gone too.

Some of the maps in places are sparse but thats mainly down to the sheer scale, imagine if they had maps this size littered with cover you would never find enemies.

As for teamwork, i got revived a few times, got repaired in my tank too other than that everyone is just finding their fet with the game.

As for specialists , i still dont like them at all.

There's a patch coming on the 19th as well, day 1 for the full release, so hopefully they'll have some of these features and some of the performance and glitches should be improved with this

Can't help but feel like the scoreboard is something intentional... a few strange design decisions however, they might surprise us. I've been playing all day and I really have missed Battlefield so really hope they can flesh it out more!

Keep getting the persistence bug the last hour or so :(

BRB gotta go rage on reddit and twitter......

Tried to play this evening but have been plagued with crashes, bugs, kicked back to the main menu...

I know it's day 1 so servers are loaded, but for me the UI is so bad and glitchy that even portal isn't fun

It's such an ordeal to set up your loadout that the game is practically over before you're done. I tried to switch grenades back to LB on xbox but that didn't work in game, and adding attachments in portal just wouldn't save at all

Got loads of error codes, had to hard reset the console multiple times.... No voice chat means zero teamplay for most players...

The lack of a server browser again is criminal

This game should not have been released like this

    So disappointed

I got that too loads of times. Testing that is what a beta is for, not paid early access. EA are run by their marketing department who haven't a clue about producing good quality software

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,259 ✭✭✭Shlippery

Switch off crossplay, that was a workaround for the persistence errors for me!

I still got it occasionally but yeah, turning off crossplay makes it as a whole more reliable.

Had a few games of breakthrough, the hacker specialist feels really underpowered, his ability is cool, especially if you pull off a hack on a tank that was about to own you and then you watch it run away when it as none of its weapons work. But it's hard to judge ranges for the device or what is interactable or not, it would be nice if interactable world items were highlighted when you took out the device and it would tell you if a vehicle was in or out of range when you aim at them. It also takes I think a bit too long for an ability that frankly doesnt do a lot. I mean hacking infantry requires that you kill them after to actually get a proper benefit, and hacking vehicles while strong doesnt necessarily give you yourself an easy advantage (though I did just unlock c5 so might try hacking then doing a quick plant. Its ok being longer for helicopters cause it disables counter measures which makes it really strong when matched with a stinger.

Wierdly the sentry gun ability is more useful as a spotter then an actual gun. At least thats how I've primarily been using it when playing defence on breakthrough. It's range seems quite wide and deep also it highlights the player so makes it easier to then snipe them out of vehicles etc.

Those have been the two specialists I've tried the most so far, and I've been trying out mostly the lmg and DMR, Lmg is nice (shame only 2 in the base game), dmr took some getting use to but by my 3rd game I was dominating with it.

also jumped into a custom portal server that was doing a sort of hardcore mode with 2042 specalists on Arica Harbour, no map and oddly a class restriction of sorts on the specalists. The only people who could revive were players running the actual medic specialist.

So it looks like you can put in some form of class restriction on the specialists in portal mode.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,428 ✭✭✭✭Blazer

Ah the good old days of each squad requiring a medic to revive them. Really wished they went back to this altogether.

Only played a few games so not in a position to really give a proper in-depth opinion but it is a hell of a lot better than the beta at least. Performance also seems OK, had some issues during the beta but this seems to be running fairly smooth.

Main complaint so far is the size of the maps. 128 player is great, but when you make the maps 2x the size of the old games, it feels like it means nothing really. Playing conquest is running simulator half the time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 22,366 ✭✭✭✭Akrasia

Yeah, they allow you to call in vehicles but there are never any available even allowing a higher number of personal transport vehicles would be handy.

  • Registered Users Posts: 22,366 ✭✭✭✭Akrasia

Plus those ziplines are just sniper fodder.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,390 ✭✭✭Homelander

OK the main game.....it's a lot better than the beta from every point of view.

It's fine, definitely not bad but honestly it's not for me and a few hours of playing has simultaneously convinced me that it's decent whilst also not that compelling that I want to buy it.

I also think the graphics are a big step back from BFV and even BF1 - I guess they had to compromise on visual quality with the huge maps, but while it's clean and sharp, everything looks bland, undetailed, cartoony.

With all the specialists and weird skins it feels more like playing COD Ground War version mixed with Black Ops operators. I assume that's a big part of what they were going for.

Haven't tried Portal yet, that's my next port of call. But the main game for me is a no.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,428 ✭✭✭✭Blazer

I hate the new promotion levels. They’re completely meaningless.

Bring back BF2 ranks where each promotion actually meant something.

I've only played one or two matches of all out warfare and I dislike the specialist system intensely. Portal is definitely where it's at. I played a good few matches with BC2/BF3 rules and the old class system holds up excellently. Too many xp farming servers though, or servers with silly modifiers. Tried setting up a conquest server with normal BF3 rules but kept getting an error message, too many servers already online or something.

They've said the scoreboard will not be returning, so unless they do a big u-turn then it won't be there on the official release day. Given the huge backlash, a u-turn wouldn't surprise me all the same.

The lack of a scoreboard is to try and make newcomers / casual players more welcome, DICE have said it was discomforting for casual players to see their names continually appear towards the bottom of scoreboards.

To be honest I think you can really see that DICE are going for a new segment of the market with 2042. Any long time player will feel that the shooting mechanics feel a lot more arcady in 2042. Again, to appeal to casual players.

I didn't really enjoy the beta and I'm not a huge fan of the early access either. Yes, a lot of the bugs have been sorted as expected but I just am not a fan of some of the changes to the core mechanics of the gameplay - specialists, lack of a scoreboard, lack of a proper ranking system, changes to the squad system. Also I think there is a lack of communication in-game and a lack of actual team play. I can't exactly put my finger on it, but the gameplay feels lifeless at times. Some of the maps don't help either, too big and not enough going on - even with 128 players.

I know people will say that DICE need to evolve the series, but to be honest i can already feel that the next instalment will be all about 'how we are returning to the core roots of Battlefield'. You can already tell from people's reaction that they are enjoying Portal the most, with all the bells and whistles of an actual Battlefield game. I think DICE probably know by now that the main game isn't cutting it with fans as they expected it to.

Just my feeling on it anyway. I'll enjoy playing it, but it's not the game I wanted from DICE. Maybe it will grow on me yet!

Is that confirmed? It seems rather odd because its not like the game is hiding how badly you are doing, it's just not showing you the entire scoreboard. It still tells me how many times I've died (just its now on the right in a breakdown instead of in the scoreboard itself) how awful I'm doing, how far down the scoreboard I am etc, It goes even worst then other battlefield games actually cause now it also rates how bad your squad is compared to other squads. I was feeling really down after 2 or 3 bad games because at the end it would put the squad rating at the bottom and I'd see my team being 30/32 and I'm like wow we were like the third worst squad.

So the game has had no problem reminding me when I'm playing sh*t.

Having played a lot of the main game, still think it's not very good.

However Portal is pretty damn fun. I honestly think they should've made a full release just called Battlefield: Portal with more maps, more modes, and included the likes of BF4 and Vietnam.

It's a mixed bag, I have to admit Portal is really good, but the main game.....not so much. But I'd still consider buying it just for Portal.

As it is it seems like a half-baked game, equally brilliant and weak in parts. They should have just committed to one or the other rather than this.

Finding it a lot more difficult to rack up kills than other BF games, which I like to think I was half decent at. Struggling big time in this one, not sure if it's lack of guns/attachments or what.

Some pretty cool moments already, going across a zipline and getting a double kill with rocket launcher, hipfiring a rocket launcher to take a heli out etc etc.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,685 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

The SKV is amazing. It's the 2nd DMR you unlock and it easily 2 shots anyone, solid rate of fire, just crap magazine size.

Shotgun is also quite nice, but obviously situational.

Been stretching out to try different things, I've mostly stayed away from the air vehicles of the battlefield games since BF1 because I found War Thunder spoilt me with the mouse aim and I find it a pain to try and fly planes or jets without it, but I thought Helicopters would be fun but either I'm supremely rusty or the air vehicles control like sh*t. At least on pc via mouse and keyboard.

Breakthrough is definitely the mode of choice in the core game. The huge scale of the maps are much better handle because they are divided up for the mode. It does have an air that the maps were designed more for breakthrough then conquest in some ways.

Also trying different specialists, Sundance's grenades are definitely scratching the op side, especially the anti tank grenade, you can easily make her a one man Anti Armor class by double dipping with the grenades and the anti tank/aa missiles. I thought the initial worry about them was a bit unfounded cause it looked like the little bird has next to no health in the preview, but in game you can spam those at grenades so quickly and rapidly switch to the other gadget to completely decimate a tank or helicopter.

I find Angel a bit awkward as a specialist, but I can see how valuable he'd be in an actual organized squad.

Irish can also be quite fun, I do enjoy dropping his shield when I see one of those hovercrafts trying to roadkill me and have it block the vehicle long enough for me to throw a c5 on it

I also tried a custom zombie game mode which was silly fun, having ai controlled nazis charge our team with only 1hp and a knife but it's only 4-8 of us and over 100 of them is silly fun.

As a long BF fan, this is the first year Im enjoying playing chaotic, arcade style Cod for kids after aderall, than BF.

Ill be honest, when it works, it can be great, a real BF experience, but certain design/mechanic decision which they decided to make just take the whole fun away.

Ui, clearly designed by 5year old, random bullet spread, desync, **** netcode, breakthrough maps with their defenceles points, hover being able to clime the building, etc.

I see again similar picture to BF5, that game at the start, like all previous ones, had certain problems and bugs, but overall the game had the BF vibe to it. This feels like a generic, arcade fps.

For me the only saving grace is Portal. Rush on Valparaiso made me smile like in old days with BFBC.

Shame to say but from me its 6/10 at best, the vibe is kinda there but to many flaws for my taste.

Ill try this later, im getting decent frames most of the time but always enjoy more frames, did you try it yourself Jonski?

The more time I play, the more I think this was never properly tested. Just spawned in to heli, wanted to leave by pressing E, was put into back of heli....

You would think that after so many games they would know how to make them

Well after playing the 10 hours it's definitely not a purchase for me. It's not terrible but it's the weakest game in the main franchise to date. After the 10 hours I'd say I enjoyed it kinda but not at all hungry for more.

Portal is decent fun but I'm not paying €60 for something I'd play for an odd hour here and there.

I've spent a decent amount of time playing this at the weekend and while I've enjoyed it cause it's still Battlefield, I'm quite disappointed as it feels like they've really regressed. I don't even mind the decision to add specialists and remove classes, there are so many other issues with the game.

The first thing that stands out is that the maps are way too big for infantry, there's so much running between objectives. They're are also badly designed, feel empty, and lack cover so it's difficult to get from point to point without getting mowed down by hovercraft, tanks or attack choppers.

I've always preferred Breakthrough/rush over conquest but breakthrough plays terribly with 128 players, it's just absolute chaos most of the time and it's difficult to stay alive for long or have much of an impact on the game. Just one example is the Orbital map, the really tall building has a capture point and it often ends up with 100+ players contesting that small area, it's like Metro or Operation Locker choke points on steroids.

Most battlefields have had flaws on release but they were fixable by patches, but I don't know if BF2042 can be fixed or how long it will take it as there are so many issues and a lot of them stem from design choices. Are we going to get a scoreboard, a server browser, a proper end of round screen or is the random bullet spread going to be removed? There's only 19 main guns in the game and it takes a really long time to level up and unlock them. Plus only a handful of them feel any way decent so there really is just 4 or 5 guns to choose from.
