EA Play 10 hour trial on PS5 is up. Downloaded and had a quick look at the menus. Just waiting for kids to go to bed before I sit in for an hour or two.

So do the older games play like essentially reskinned 2042 or do they play like the originals with a fancy new look.

And eh where is BF1, BF2, BF2142, BF4, BF5 and need for speed hardline, are they coming at all? I can see why they would leave out 1 and 5 being the most recent games. but come on 2142 needs some love 😁

Old games with shiney up to date visuals and engine, but you can also keep them classic like for example in BC2 you could not strafe as you were sprinting, you can keep it like this classic way or actually run BC2 or 1942 with modern 2042 movement , its pretty cool.

Lads stupid question probably - but does progress in the 10hr trial carry over to the full game?

Have EA access and have the gold edition downloaded, wouldn't mind starting playing now.

10 hour trial will save all your progression for the full game.

I have the 10 hour on game pass pc but its a different account to my origin one on PC so instead of getting 10 hours of progression then having to switch to my pc i just bought the go,d version on origin for pc, portal games have more than convinced me its worth it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,819 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

Yip you are playing the full game for 10 hours. If you buy it you just keep playing.

Played for a while this evening, one very annoying thing is the lack of a server browser for the conquest and breakthrough modes? Or am I missing something really obvious? It keeps putting me in games that are almost over and you can't pick the map

Played hazard zone. Will be good with 4 people who know each other. Was messy without voice chat.

Played conquest. Was fine. Maps are huge and new so no idea where to go. Got a bit boring.

Then stuck on portal. BF3 classic conquest on Caspian border. Oh my it's stunning.

It's exactly what we wanted. BF3 in stunning new frostbite visuals. But best of all. When You spawn, there are vehicles just there sitting on the map for you to run up to and hop in.

Jets, helicopters, tanks, APC ms, jeeps. None of this spawning in the sky nonsense. You rip down a run way and take off. Yes you still die 3 seconds later but the take off is cool.

Biggest impression I've taken away from most of the videos is that EA could have saved a lot of money by just doing a BF3 or BC2 remaster. Westies group chat basically lost the plot that it played just like BF3 but with better graphics and levelcap sounded like he had a mild orgasm when he got an m16a3.

Most streamers have been 'polite' about the standard mode and hazard zone, levelcap hasnt, he's slated hazard zone as doa.

Which leads to my concern, EA is wanting to monetize this game, and the assumption was the standard mode and hazard zone with their focus on 'specialists' was going to be the focus of their monetization and Portal was like an icing gift for long time fans to stomach that. But if the community rejects the specialists and hazard zone and focuses primarily on Portal there is the concern that EA will be looking at how to monetize that (and potentially ruin it).

The funny thing is the mode is difficult to outright monetize beyond simply selling new maps and gear ala the old Premium model, which is flawed cause it splits the player base.

You cant give everyone map access but put weapons and classes behind a paywall because it'll clash with the customizable nature of the mode, if someone makes a gun master map and puts a dlc gun in it how does that handle some players having access to it and others dont? Then you are again back to splitting the player base

And from EA's perspective you cant stick it all behind battle pass systems because again Portal is highly customizable and you know someone will be setting up maps to let players grind out battle tasks super quick.

You could make it battlepass rewards but require players the play in the hazard zone/all out warfare modes to grind it which will easily see a massive backlash from the idiocy of playing a mode you hate to unlock stuff for a mode you like.

So I'm not sure how it can be monetized, so expect a lot of early patches trying to pick up hazard zone and all out warfare to be more popular.

It's gonna have to be portal all the time unless they can sort out the matchmaking system or give us a proper server browser

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,685 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

Battlefield 5 was the same at launch I remember, surprised they are making the same mistake again

  • Registered Users Posts: 22,366 ✭✭✭✭Akrasia

Game decided to not count any of my scores in conquest just now. Bit annoying when you ptfo and get a bunch of kills and your biggest achievement on the end of round screen is that you stayed alive for 3 minutes

Maybe the game is punishing me for my sudden trip to Australia

Had a couple of games there. BF3 Caspian Border Conquest on Portal looks amazing. As does Arica Harbour on Rush. Still used the old flanking route on the 2nd set of MCOMS to good effect!

Squadmates seem to stick together a lot more I noticed in the 3/4 rounds I played. In the Beta they'd leave you in an instant.

Gonna give it a couple more rounds tomorrow before work at 5pm... May have to end up phoning in sick 😀

No joystick support....**** you EA...I don't want to fly with a crap controller.

No server browser - first game was on kaleidoscope and it finished within 10 mins and then next map? Bloody kaleidoscope.

Vanilla mode just seems so sterile.

Tried it last night before bed, said I’d have a quick game - got thrown in to a Conquest on Hourglass that lasted nearly 45 mins 😂 Brilliant match though, a lot of infantry and tank fighting and a dust storm to top it off.

  • Registered Users Posts: 22,366 ✭✭✭✭Akrasia

Did they actually put you into another map on the same server? I kept getting booted back into the matchmaking screen so out of all the games I played yesterday, I only saw the beginning of a round once

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,428 ✭✭✭✭Blazer

no never changed servers...just loaded the next map in and same map.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,428 ✭✭✭✭Blazer

Whatever you do , do not change the controller settings. Trying to revert back is a constant crashing of the game when trying to switch back to default. Guessing no QA done on this section.

I seen Cully playing so joined on him, nothing happened game said Waiting on Cully to Matchmake, seen another buddy on so joined him and game said same thing waiting on deadbolt to matchmake. So i said **** it and was not in a party and joined a conquest game, it somehow dragged Cully and Deadbolt into my game 😁

So yeah party system has some kinks.

Weird thing is i accepted invite while i was playing 1942 portal nothing happened so i played away for a further 5 mins or so then black screen and i load into 2042 lol.

But the game is fcuking awesome, 2042 is sooooo much better than the beta build but portal is where its at.

Its a total game changer for past and present fans of BF.

128 man Rush on Valpraiso is interesting lol

I think so, the recent BF games i can take or leave them they werent great to be honest but portal feels like dice are back on form.

After my first round of a portal game, I think I realise now that it's not the gimmick I thought it was, but is in fact the hidden gem of 2042. It has much content again as the main game, as well as variety in gameplay, and pure nostalgia too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,685 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

So of course people are ruining Portal already. The sheer number of XP grinding servers set up is ridiculous and has led to all the Portal server slots being full already DICE have noticed the 'bad behaviour' and taking action. I am actually surprised they allowed people to earn XP in Portal so I think that's Dice's fault as much as the obvious player looking for the quickest route to unlock everything.

I'd be curious to hear the opinions of anyone on the main game, who didn't like the beta? Not because of bugs, but the design choices, the specialists, the clunky movement, sparse maps and zero team-work, etc.

I can see reviews are reasonably good but tons of people liked the beta too, and while that's completely fine I thought it was awful.

  • Registered Users Posts: 868 ✭✭✭DarkJager21

The beta was a 2 month old build of the game with a lot of features removed (Commorose etc). I wasn't a huge fan of it but I am loving this, feels like proper Battlefield again.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,685 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

From early speculation to final hands on the specialists are a disappointment but mostly a mild one, I think not tying them to classes in some form was the biggest mistake.

I think the big disappointment for me is the whole sector thing, I knew just scaling up conquest to 128 players was going to be a problem, there was a reason why the other 100 player shooters like Squad and Hell Let Loose etc have very structured map progression setups to help manage the scale and numbers. When first revealed I thought the sector system in bf2042 would have had some similar mechanics to encourage players to kind of treat each sector as it's own smaller battlefield that they need to focus on more, but it's not really worked like that sadly, it's just there not massively serving a purpose. I think requiring holding a sector to actually respawn and call in vehicles etc would have gone a long way to focus the battles more. I dont think the maps are actually sparse, I think the game mode itself is an unfocused mess because it is basically conquest which was also prone to being an unfocused mess when scaled up.

I was pretty disappointed with the beta for all the reasons you mentioned. Didn't like specialists, it was pretty buggy. Couldn't change controls on helicopters etc.

But the full game is much better. There are way more specialists so not as bad on that front. It still has the same issue with no dedicated classes. But I did see much more co-operation. I don't like that you can chose any class loadout. Why not just make the specialist dedicated to a class. You could end up selling way more down the line. You could release 4-8 every season and people would still buy them.

But to be honest the winner is the Portal. If you loved the older games you can relive that.
