Yes, it records when someone/something is very close to the car, like within a foot, or two.

I wouldn't disable camera based detection, as you may well not have footage if someone dings your door, or keys your car, because Sentry won't activate in most of those circumstances unless camera is on.

When I park at a busy location, on my return, I do a quick sweep of the car to see if there is any damage. Takes seconds and gives me peace of mind to ignore dozens of sentry events when I sit in the car.

Thanks. I will definitely have this enabled. Cool feature.

CC and AP stopped working again today on my way home. Auto wipers also don't work, as well as the indicators not cancelling after a lane change. Another thing is the road lines don't show on the display and other vehicles show on display. Basically the camera system is not functional when this error occurs which has me doubting that some of the emergency safety features would work when in this state. I've submitted a service request with photos and times it happened, including last Friday. Hopefully they resolve that bug quickly.

I was away overseas just before new year and had the car in the Airport carpark. After a couple of days I was concerned about having battery when I got back so turned of Sentry.

Arrived back at the airport to find this. Still sorting out with insurance and no CCTV footage....😡

    Hi Folks,

Wassie - sorry to see your car was damaged at the airport, hope you get it sorted.

I read on Tesla website that the alarm needs to be activated, I went into the computer on the car into safety and I can't see it, is this just for American models or something, mine is a 221 model?

Also I see on my phone app under security that there is a pin to be activated, I read something about this also, do I need to do this?

You can activate it in the car or via the app.... think it's under security settings in the car..

Also, just to be aware, if you have Sentry Mode on, when the battery reached 20% it will turn off Sentry Mode to preserve battery (so Sentry cannot be used if car is under 20% SOC)

i Am presuming your questions is about Sentry the feature which triggers the car to start recording when it detects a threat. It is a question of either turning this feature on or off depending on your preference accepting rhat has already been said about consuming additional battery power.

The option to set a PIN is entirely different and nothing related to Sentry abd(or) cameras. If set It merely means that when you enter the car you can not drive without entering a PIN number ..an additional feature that may give you more comfort from a security perspective or may also be considered an inconvenience..you chose!

The Tesla user manual is excellent and has most answers that you need about all the features and also has excellent search functionality.

Sorry to see you have to wonder how these people got their licence(that is if it was an accident). We have mirrors and most cars have sensors and some even have camera's. Never mind those new features a mirror is enough to see a car behind you when you are pulling into a parking spot or leaving.

Could have got their licence 60yrs ago

Got is probably the correct word. Didn’t the government grant licences about 40 years or more ago due to a lack of testing?

Yes a couple of thousand i remember reading that think it was the 70s

It was 1979 and 45,000. So 45 years ago and anyone who availed of the offer at the time would be at least 65 years old now. Many would no longer be driving or have moved on to the next level.

I think it's much more likely to be just a regular licensed a**hole who did it. A rear door ding by a child might be unnoticed by a driver, but I think whoever did that knew they did it.

There are many drivers in my rural area who never took a test. And they aren’t that old. But the ones I know probably wouldn’t drive past our local Tesco

But as you say was probably just a regular asshole..

Yeah, I know one who paid the tester to pass in a rural area where it would be relatively easy to pass decades ago. Bizarrely he used to brag about it like it was an achievement until a young female (recently passed) driver pointed out that it was a pity he didn't have the skills to pass. Never mentioned it after that and he'd pride himself on being an excellent driver (he's not).

Heart overruled the head and bought a 21 M3P. Fantastic car to drive and you're correct impossible to drive efficiently but what the hell. My concern over it being overly harsh on poor roads hasn't materialised. Granted its a bit more than an 18" wheeled car but doesn't in any way spoil the drive.

Only issue is that its so easy to kerb it and as I'm the kind of person who previously judged the location of kerb with the tyre wall I'm going to have to recalibrate quickly! BTW any suggestions for a DIY touch up method for minor scratches on the 20" wheels?

I bought a little dark grey touch up paint pen for mine. Mind you coming up on 4 years now and I couldn't care less 😂

I'm sure after a few weeks I'll be the same but in the interim do you mind saying which brand? Was in Halfords earlier and I got a headache looking at all the different products

I'll do it the next time. Was in a rush and a queue of lads looking for advice. Usual Sat am

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,003 ✭✭✭✭mfceiling

It was in the local motor factors. Just a generic dark grey.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,580 ✭✭✭eagerv

Congratulations, I am sure will be very happy.

All Model 3 are easy to kerb, I damaged mine when only a few months old, but only lightly, so was easy enough to top up with a few coats with some light sanding in between. Barely noticeable after. I cannot find the post I put up with photos. Bought the touch up pen on recommendation from @jusmeig. Perfect colour match, but I am sure any dark grey would look equally good.

Does that model not have a 360 camera on it lads. Can't be kerbing wheels with that available

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,580 ✭✭✭eagerv

Still very much in beta testing. And not yet on older models, but coming apparently. Similar with operational matrix lights. But hey, something to look forward to😋.

Shape of flared arches makes judging wheels a little difficult at first. And no tyre rim protection. Haven’t hit mine since I got car 2 years ago…

The reason the 21 M3P is so easy to kerb is down to the new performance wheel design and the tyres. They are the same size tyres as the older version but on the Uber turbines they look stretched.

First thing I’d do if I bought a MIC P, would be to up the width of the tyres to the 245/255 instead of the 235.

It still happens. 360 camera doesn’t stop it for people not paying attention.

I never use the cameras for parking, old fashioned parking skills and using the mirror with the auto dip setting.

None of this fancy technology gona save you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,434 ✭✭✭✭listermint

I'm pure old school. But old school won't let you see a kerb up against you're new wheels. Anyone not using the expensive technology that keeps your alloys fresh as they went on needs their head checked. Much quicker to glance at that and get all of the information immediately.

A quick follow on to my previous message about range. I had calculated that I could have covered 380km on a full battery, so last Thursday/Friday I topped up to 100% at Birdhill, and a quick session on Google maps worked out that Birdhill to Tralee to Charleville to Mallow and then back to Birdhill would be 340km... so I should be fine. Leaving Mallow on Friday the car told me I would arrive at Birdhill with 1% (and only if I did not drive above 90kmh). I bottled it.... no way was I going to risk that - a diversion, or a missed turn, could have been disastrous!!!

The main learning from the trip was that the charging infrastructure in that part of the world is - and I'll use a quote from the chap who was using the charger I turned up at - "absolute shite". Tesco in Mallow has a charging point, but I couldn't find it (and the same guy said it was just as well that I didn't find it as its only 7kw). Ended up at Lidl in Charleville, and had a short wait as only one of the cables was working.

This was the first time I've felt annoyance about charging. Still love the car, tho 😀
