While the Christmas day parkruns were fairly confined to a couple of corners of the country, it looks like a lot more venues are holding New years day events across the country which is great to see. Hopefully the predicted incoming storm is only a teacup job.

    This too shall pass.

Looks like we dodged a bullet. The UK is getting a lot of cancellations tomorrow (including Bushy London) for weather warnings.

    This too shall pass.

Has anyone done Ally Pally parkrun?

Looks like a 3 lap which I don't really like. Would I be better going further afield to Finsbury or Higbury Fields?

Is Hampstead Heath within reach for you? Lovely spot, not a pb course 🙂

Would be a 3 mile run each direction to get there and back. Not ruling it out but there are 4 closer ones 😅

Looks to be cancelled tomorrow although it is the 11th I will be looking to do it

Newcastle west in Limerick cancelled tomorrow too. 04/01. Slippery paths.

Big shoutout to the volunteers in Shanganagh Park yesterday who were out early with a wheelbarrow full of sand spreading it on any icy patches, fantastic dedication. 306 runners, great turnout.

A UK event has had to cancel their inaugural event as a direct result of it being shared online, running the risk of it being overrun. It may be less of an issue here in Ireland but something to consider when sharing details of inaugural events.

    Highbury Fields is a five-lapper…

Ally Pally used to be my local parkrun but I tended to do Finsbury more frequently. Both are undulating but preferred the wider road in finsbury park. Ally pally is a nicer location, particularly in summer where they change to a two-lap course, but a lot off-road so slow course

I'm staying in the Clayton airport hotel in a few weeks time - Darndale and Father Collins are the closest.

    Which one would you choose?

If you are looking for a high finishing place, head for Darndale, buddy of mine got his bucket list 1st place there. You might see some comments about its location, a 'rough' part of the city, but honestly the people there could not have been friendlier. The course is all path around a smallish park with one incline. Liable to be puddles, but it is a quick course. On street parking but no issue with spaces. Normally the volunteers have tea and coffee afterwards, but your close enough to Clarehall if you want shop bought coffee.

Father Collins is a strange course, lots of twists and turns so not that quick. Bigger turnout then Darndale, its an unusual backdrop with the turbines and man made lakes. Again all paths, further away than Darndale and parking may be an issue as its quite a residential area.

From your hotel it's not actually that far of a trip to River Valley in Swords, worth a try just for the 'hill'. Again just up the M1 is Donabate, a PB course. Both these have plenty of parking, friendly attendance and local coffee shops.

Personally I'd go for Darndale, it's a smaller parkrun in an area that needs the likes of a parkrun. Of all 4 I mentioned I got my quickest time in Darndale, all 4 are friendly but isn't that whats parkrun all about. No matter your choice, do the right thing turn up early, have the chats, met a guy in Darndale who has completed the alphabet challenge twice, enjoy the run and have a coffee.

The only event I could see that happening to is something like "Phoenix Park Run" or something similar in a central Dublin park.

    This too shall pass.

So what do they do in that case? Can they only put it up on the website after the first runs are already done as locals only events or just skip having an inaugural run and start with #2?

This one gets single digit finishers -its near cloughjordan and is a difficult course.

Just seen on the email that Lidl are pulling out of their partnership at the end of February.

    This too shall pass.

Think it got a bit silly with the weekly "freebie" with the codes being shared everywhere, in the last couple of months the freebie was something like one loose apple/orange.

Strokestown could go by the way side as main RD can't commit to it anymore

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 509 ✭✭✭Butterbeans

Are they the Event Director too? It's hard if you're the person doing RD most weeks in terms of being able to commit, it's not just Saturday morning.

We're very lucky to have a team of 8 RDs (of which I'm one, and one also doubles as the ED) at my local parkrun so you're only doing it roughly once every 2 months.

Is there any scope for expanding the core team there? Surely a few would step up rather than have it fall away.

What sort of numbers would Strokestown get? For comparison, our own parkrun would average 70/80.

Being RD can be a bit daunting at the start, I certainly found it so for the first few, but love it now.

Just looked at their rosster and its full for Saturday. I would suspect that there is enough of people who care to not let it happen.

Just been reading the posts on Facebook looking for regulars to take over

A little further from the airport (1/2 a mile) but id go with Fr Collins, small and nice park containing a flat course (with a couple of sharp turns), medium sized crowd with paces from 18min to over 30min most Saturdays.

Darndale not great, tiny number of runners, but if you want a win :)

Looks like my choices will be limited. Ally Pally and Hamstead Heath cancelled so will try Finsbury (waiting on an update in morning but as of now it is scheduled to proceed).

It is a 4km run from where I am to the park so 13km in total planned. Forecast is to be -4⁰ in the morning so can't say I am really looking forward to it 🤣🤣

Check the socials/5K app as a few courses have declared that they haven't thawed out in time and cancelled.

    This too shall pass.

According to the Marley Park Instagram page all events in DLR parks are cancelled in order to let DLR assess the parks for themselves.

    Who is "DLR"?

    This too shall pass.
