I like that Matheson now have a bit where you can say you are a hear/dare student shows they’re being more inclusive maybe or so I hope haha

    Nothing from either of them.

Not sure whether to be worried or not. I would’ve thought we’d hear back by now

Does anybody know what are the chances of a second year student getting a training contract after a summer internship at a big firm like Matheson? What kind of things would you need to do on the internship to stand out from the older and more experienced interns, or would the chances be low due to age and lack of experience?

Yes you can! Somebody in my class from college got a TC offer from Matheson in their second year after doing a summer internship for them. It's not so much standing out as showing that you've got the skills and aptitude for a trainee position.

Everyone still waiting on offer letter from Matheson? It’s kinda nerve-wracking!

Think its coming by post or email?

A lot to ask, but would anybody who secured A&L interview be willing to discuss their application? nothing but rejections all month and feel Belfast virtual internship is my last chance for the bigger firms.

Someone on here who secured an internship with Matheson mentioned that they received their documents (offer letter and contract), but didn't mention how they were sent.

People with TC offers are awaiting their offer letters and contracts but it appears that the internship offer holders have theirs (if you look at the post I've quoted). There's no mention of how the documents were sent, which is the reason why I mentioned the post because someone queried as to whether we'd get them via email or post.

My apologies - I misinterpreted your original post.

    Matheson letters out by email

Hi everyone. Congratulations to everyone who received A&L offers during the week. I was recently selected for an interview for their student placement programme and I have noticed that the process seems to pretty much mirror that of the internship (with the 3 online assessments etc). I was just wondering if anyone who completed an interview with the firm would have any advice/feedback as to what kind of questions they ask/what is the best way to prepare?. I interviewed with a different firm for a summer internship but that interview just entailed a more in-depth run through of my application etc. Thanks :)

If no one has heard from Lavelle Partners I might follow up?

Has anyone who had a video interview from DAC Beachcroft heard back yet? Should I contact them to follow up?

Any evidence to the rumours that Maples is paying 85-90k for Newly qualified salaries?

That seems like a good idea. I was thinking of sending a follow up email today too

Do you expect someone to whip out a payslip? Lol

Some transparency would be great! Candidates are completely left in the dark with regards to remuneration, etc. It's a bit frustrating as there seems to be such a wide disparity in compensation and no way to really know what you're getting yourself into. We would all be better off if people were open about these things! UK firms are completely open about this.

I know the big five pay 70k plus 15/20% bonus depending on performance. That comes to roughly 80k total compensation. Maybe Maples are incorporating the bonus figure into their base. If that holds true, 85k-90k sounds reasonable

Why does it matter? You're not being offered a NQ position. Most firms have a baseline but there's definitely discretion for some NQs to be paid more than others.

Salary expectations is one of the most important aspects of taking a position. Of course it matters. Not just to me, but helpful to anyone considering their choices!

But from a pragmatic perspective, how could a firm know how much you'll be worth to them as an employee in 3 years time?

What will the market be like?

How many clients will you bring in?

    Will you work 60+ hours/week?

Will you sacrifice your social life/spend less time with friends/family to put in extra hours?

Will you get a master's/further specialise?

What sort of reputation will you have?

You get picture. Apologies if I've come across as narky! Not my intention at all.

The point that top UK firms are still open about their salaries (both at trainee and NQ level) still stands tbf. They could be transparent without guaranteeing all trainees would get NQ jobs!

Is that better though? There's more scope for negotiating a better salary without a range set in stone.

He didn’t ask if it was better, it’s just a fact that there’s at least a ballpark figure knocking about. It’s not a bad thing!

I had a video interview and yet to hear anything back. There was one person on here who said they got a call from them saying they had another interview after the video one. That was a good few weeks ago and they haven’t posted anything about it since

Many people here willing to do a TC in a rural area or are people holding out for a large town or city?

    Where did you hear this?

Maybe they are feeling the squeeze from Dechert's 115K.
