No parish rule in Waterford I'm fairly sure so not much that can be done on changing the catchment area I'd imagine.

Time to as Gaultier to play hurling? They would be senior in 10 years. It would benefit Waterford hugely and they would win a football title quicker as they would have more players and more importantly they would have full control over their team. Before anyone says it, Passage would be effected but it would make them work harder as a club to retain their own players. Not ideal but if nothing is done, it will effect they whole county. In the U14 and U16 hurling championships there was a total of 19 walkovers and we haven't even finished them yet! Ballygunner have their act together and their conveyer belt of talent is getting stronger and in turn their Adult teams will get stronger. In the next 5 years it wouldn't surprise me if they have 2 Senior, 1 Int premier, 1 premier and a Jun A team in the club. Look at the age profile of their teams!! A lot of young lads playing and not relying on older players like most other clubs. Its a numbers game.

I think it's worth waiting to see what happens if Ballygunner do have two senior teams next year or in the near future. From what I hear it means they must nominate two entirely separate panels with no movement between them. That would mean there are 25 or so players ring fenced into their "A" panel and the same in the "B" panel with separate management and support. Would they even be able to train together? You could have a guy that's number 22 on the "A" panel but gets annoyed as he would rather be playing more for the "B" panel. Then if players are to come up to the "A" panel they would need to come from the third team. We have heard how the current format is tough for teams with smaller playing pools as it's week on week so this would be a further challenge.

Then if Ballygunner won the county, could they then use the players from the "B" panel in the Munster championship as it is a different competition?

I've nothing against Tallow but Ballygunner winning on Saturday could be the best thing to make next years competition more competitive.

1st team almost guaranteed to be in munster and get a county medal, be very surprised anyone would choose seconds over firsts when medals involved

as some one said, Gaultier do have a hurling team, they’re called Passage!

Very interesting minor hurling appointment for the next 2, possibly 3 years, in Darragh O’Sullivan with David Franks and Darragh Duggan.

Pleasantly surprised to see Joxer and his management team go straight on to the U20’s also for 2 years, possibly being 3.

    Intresting appointments and pretty positive

Isn't that Ephie Fitzgeralds 2nd stint as senior football manager ?

Reality is Ken McGrath might never manage in an intercounty setup again, such a pity it just didn't click but we move on

Will we see the Minors move under 20 next year ?

A bit of reading on the topic of "if BG won premier intermediate"

I don’t doubt for one second that Fogarty will have checked his facts with a member of the county board. However the line about it being left up to Ballygunner themselves is dubious at best.
The rule is clear. The winner of the Premier Intermediate Hurling is promoted to Senior Hurling. This has been stated in the Waterford GAA Bye-laws since 2023.
I have no doubt the officers of the County Board would rather not be faced with such a scenario. It would undoubtedly bring unwanted commentary around the standard of Waterford clubs and Waterford hurling in general.
Maybe with approval from clubs at a county board meeting the rule could be changed, but I’m not sure how permissible that is given it’s in this years Bye-laws.

As mentioned before Tallow could do a lot of favours

What does Ballygunner seniors have to do who represents Waterford in the Intermediate club championship ? So if Ballygunner Intermediates win but the seniors lose out in the semi final/final the Ballygunner Intermediates will then be able to represent Waterford in the Intermediate ?

No ones second team go into the club all ireland series. Tallow will be representing Waterford in Munster intermediate.

Who is managing the Ballygunner Intermediates ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,048 ✭✭✭DiscoStew

That has always been my understanding of it also.

If what Fogarty says is true this is some mess if Ballygunner end up with 2 senior teams next year. what was going through Ballysaggart heads to make this proposal a couple of years ago and what we’re the co board delegates thinking allowing this to be approved? Egg on faces all around

on the flip side credit to them for being proactive with the underage management appointments aswell. Getting the best coaches in the county into our underage teams is a massive step forward. Gives us a fighting chance at underage level the next hew years and we will have decent senior managerial candidates in a few years time aswell

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,032 ✭✭✭914

From a ballysaggart pov maybe they were protecting themselves and other teams, as BG could win premier intermediate 4 or 5 years in a row and no one gets promoted. Having BG promoted could give the other Premier intermediate teams a shot at promotion each year.

so in other words they wanted an easier pathway to success…. You can’t change the structure to get rid of one team that stands in your way. What’s the excuse then if senior teams are getting relegated due to Ballygunners B involvement in that grade?

It’s the delegates job to ensure what is being put forward is done with the right intentions in mind and for the greater good.

The under age managerial appointments are very encouraging. Coming on the back of the Minor AI win this year, the glass is definitely half full !

BTW … I think one (or both) of the Senior semis are on TG4 this Sunday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,048 ✭✭✭DiscoStew

I’d be fairly sure Ballysaggart were worried about Ballygunner constantly winning it, opting not to go up and there being no relegation from senior. I don’t think it’s a scenario that would benefit anyone.

A compromise may have been that Ballygunner could opt not to go up after winning it once, but should they do 2 in a row they would be compelled to go up.

How could it not be a mess…

Can you picture the 2 teams playing each other in a round robin game. What if Ballygunners B had to win and A were already through. Ballygunner A decide to ‘rest’ players. Can you imagine the fallout from it

Do you think either side would even want to play each other in a knockout game? Would anyone from outside Ballygunner even want to go and watch it ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,032 ✭✭✭914

I don't disagree, just trying to put some logic on why ballysaggart might have proposed it this way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,032 ✭✭✭914

They could probably play it in ballygunner and have a family fun day!

the under age management selections are very encouraging. Good to see a bit of forward thinking going on with under age appointments. Definitely didn’t see that minor appointment coming. David franks has built up a good reputation mainly through his involvement with ballygunner. Was he involved with Wexford seniors the last two years? My understanding is this years under 15s are pretty talented so wonder will they do what joxer did with this years minors and blood a lot of them next year get experience which will stand to them the following year when they will be at the age

I was thinking that it would be two years time when joxer would get the under 20 gig as that would be when you’d expect this years minors to be coming on board. I wonder with ken finishing up it would have probably been hard to give some one just one year at it and then joxer take over after them the following year. Would it be soon to start blooding some of the minors next year?
