Homa fired his caddie again and carried the bag in the US Open qualifiers. There's something wrong with the guy. He didn't qualify either.

Good coverage of the Irish today. McIlroy in marquee group. Lowry playing with Conners.

Total unknown - a Chilean ranked 316- needs a par at 17 and birdie at the par 5 last for a 59 .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,734 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

He is not unknown, he shot 57 on the Korn Ferry tour last year.

He's in the bunker on 17, not an easy up and down.

Edit to add: That 57 is the lowest score ever on a professional golf tour.

Bogey on 17, hit a good bunker shot to about 10-12 feet, just missed the putt, it shaved the edge of the hole.

Errant drive on 18, third to the green landed beside the hole but spun back to somewhere in the 15-20 foot range. Missed the putt so shoots a 61 for tied first round lead.

Excellent round from Lowry , but you just can't trust him. He was in contention last week for the first 2 days, then blew up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,435 ✭✭✭Ottoman_1000

Lowry is ranked out side the top 75 in all putting metrics on the PGA tour. He's 111th for putt's inside 10 feet…

He must be the most frustrated man in the world of golf, because the rest of his game is top notch! But he'll never it done with such an miss-behaving flat stick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,913 ✭✭✭coillcam

He does have a Sunday weakness but we don't always get to see it when he's not in contention. Suspect putting wilts when the pressure comes on and he does struggle to ride out the bad breaks.

Ultimately the flat stick is the differentiator. The numbers don't lie. Schefffler is unstoppable at the moment due to a significant jump in putting stats. From tour average to top 30. Pair that with the best tee to green game and it's lights out.

He lost a tournament by 1 shot a couple of years back when he lost 8 shots to the field in putting SG. Imagine being that good tee to green where you lost a guaranteed 2 shots in putting every round to the tour average. Yet you could still contend. An average putting performance that week and he wins by 6 to 7 strokes....

Scheffler changed to a mallet. He went claw grip on short putts. He mixed it up and experimented. I think Shane would have nothing to lose in trying something different. Not saying he'll do a Scotty on it by any means but it has got to be worth a punt.

Imagine you had Denny McCarthy taking Shane's putts.... I think you get the idea.

As critical as I am about Shane here. I think he's actually on course for his best ever year on tour in terms of money/points. So many big finishes. He's just oh so close to doing something really special and giving himself plenty of chances along the way.

Shane's done very well for himself last year and this, getting a big financial boost from the LIV effect on PGA winnings

Absolutely agree, as you say, if Denny was putting for Shane, he'd easily have a win or 2 a season on the tour with how the rest of his game is currently.

I think a lot of his frustrating comes down to his weak putting game, it must be soul destroying hitting decent shots, and giving yourself chances on numerous holes throughout the round. But rarely take the opportunities. 111th for putts inside 10 feet is just not going to cut it in the winners circle.

I'd love to see him try something new.

Matthieu had a 12 on his first hole of the day, the par 4 10th.

That's the biggest score I've ever heard of since Kevin Na.

McIlroy had an 8 at a par 4

I think he's happy to go home now and have three days to work on the faults.

+8 for 12 holes. Definitely making sure he m/c

Fair play to Shane. Didn't see this coming today. He's -5 for his round today after 7 holes. He's 1 shot clear at the top(-15), though, the the leaders, Manassero and Fox are yet to tee off(-14).

hall standing to his back to hole on the other side he’s putting on. Should be told to get a grip and you’re only wasting time and put on the clock

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,262 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Lowry must be disappointed, he finished on -13. He was on -15 after 4 holes, then it was largely quiet, until the back 9 where he dropped a shot, then made a birdie, which he almost missed from close range, it rattled the cup, then finished with 2 more bogeys.

-5 for his round after 4 holes, but +2 for the remaining 14. He was leading early on, now he's in a share of 13th place.

I like Sam Burns but I hope Ryan Fox does it.

Playoff, Foxy with a clutch putt.

I never seen this before. They changed hole position on the green before they played it for the third time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,869 ✭✭✭DJIMI TRARORE

Did they actually move the flag?

Was there a bit of coolness between them argyle end. Didn’t expect kisses but at least a kind word after the epic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,734 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Yes, about maybe 30 feet left of where it was. Ryan had balls of steel on the third playoff. Went over the water with a wood to about six feet, missed the eagle putt but knew he had two to win it.

Sam raced his eagle putt by and missed the one back.

It definitely seemed a bit cool. I expected a bit more of a chat but I guess Sam Burns was raging, he waited two hours post-round to make a balls of a playoff. He should've won it on the first hole, faffed about on the 2nd and 3rd holes, then 3-putted to hand it to Foxy.

Delighted for Fox, he took the initiative with the two attempts to go for the green during the playoff holes. Clutched the birdie putt on the 72nd too. Fair play to him.

Fox was blessed his 1st attempt at going for the green on his 2nd shot didn't end up in the drink. And that Burns' putt to win on the 1st playoff hole was poor. But ya take what chances you're given, and his shot to the green on last hole was magnificent. An enjoyable tournament overall.

I loved the course. I loved the way it was set up too with the rough getting worse the farther you missed the fairway.
