    That really is disgraceful!

We went into lockdown with those kind of figures in mind. 85000 could die.

And we still have a long list of restrictions 6 months later despite the fact that only 1777 died. Oh yeah... and we admitted that the number is overstated by a lot.

I would be surprised if even 77 died FROM Covid. It's been obvious since the end of May that the virus is not deadly.

the first article, you missed the term "worst case" which does not mean definitely will. made on the basis of the information available at the time and revised as required as the evidence stats and data changed, i would expect.
article 2, the hope was people would wear the masks and we wouldn't need to make it manditory.
article 3, because we didn't get enough people to wear them, they had to be made manditory.
article 4, because people still aren't getting reality, fines are being introduced.

We don't know the actual mortality rate and probably never will.

We do know that there is likely WAY more cases than reported. And we do know that the deaths are overstated by quite a lot.

So the mortality rate is likely way lower than you think. Obviously the mortality rate is very wrong if you think we are going to have a 5 figure number of deaths.

Regardless of what the death toll may be, we have to get on with life anyways.
Time to act like grown ups.

acting like grownups is what most of are doing.
we are also already getting on with life.

You keep saying this. Multiply the mortality rate by the population of Ireland. That is a 5 figure number.

A 5 figure number that might not have any bearing on reality.

No virus has infected the entire Irish population ever in the x thousand years that people have lived here. The herd immunity principle makes it impossible.

Worst case scenario. Where we go on like normal and let it ravage society. St Patricks day parade goes ahead not a bother. 85k sounds about right for a worst case scenario prediction where half the country gets it at the same time.

Sweden didn't lockdown at all and have double our population.
Wonder why they didn't have 170000 deaths...

    Ireland's death statistics in August:

    700 from cancer

    70 from Alcohol

    32 from Suicide

    0 from Covid

Should we start taking cigarettes out of people's mouths if we see them smoking?

Nope, we aren't getting on with life.

Loads of pointless restrictions in place.

Can't even have 5% capacity of an outdoor sports stadium used for fans.

    Absolutely shameful stuff.

Yeah... there really is a long list of things that are still closed, heavily restricted / cancelled etc.
That includes pubs, gigs, all forms of entertainment, tourism, medical treatments, screenings, gyms, curfews.

In Fact, I can't take anybody seriously that suggests we are getting on with things.

Lol. It is not 3% mortality from total population but 3% mortality from people who contract virus. We all know that about half of the people will not contract it anyway.

I was listening to that flute Gerry Killeen on Classic Hits one day.

He actually said he expects every person in Ireland to spend time in ICU with Covid over the next few years.

    He needs treatment

Roughly 67% required to reach herd immunity. Worst case scenario, over 3 million people in Ireland would get it.

Most of the people in this thread have no idea what is happening in other countries. Some even genuinely think we had the most strict lockdown in Europe which is kind of funny.

You've not been to Europe this Summer I take it

No I haven't but I talk regularly with my brother who has been living in Madrid for 7 years and I also have friends in Paris, various parts of the UK and in Poland. Not sure what the point of your question was to be honest. My brother was allowed to leave his apartment once a week to shop and that was it for 8 weeks. They never had the 2k for exercise that we always had. There was police and army on the streets 24/7 etc it was very different to here. Paris was the same. Poland was more like here.

My point is, you thought it was funny when people say Ireland are the most restrictive nation in Europe.

You then refer to the restriction levels on major European cities, 6 months previously, with more inhabitants than the whole of Ireland.

Actually I was referring to lockdown not the ongoing restrictions, see the quote below

Currently in Madrid outdoor gatherings are limited to 10 people. There are restrictions on weddings, funerals and all other religious gatherings. Crowds at sports are banned, they don't have pubs like we do but nightclubs are shut, masks are mandatory indoors, cafe, bar shop capacities all restricted. Does that sound like Dublin to you or not?

This is everywhere and you'll only make yourself more miserable by getting your head in to thinking that life is better everywhere else when really it's mostly the same.

So report in the Indo of Glynn telling everyone in Dublin and Limerick that they need to adhere to physical distancing and cut down their social contacts and threatening a return to "places we do not want to be" with a complaint about people wearing visors rather than masks.

He's really overstepped his authority at this point.
Zero deaths again today but yea, let's threaten people with lockdowns for being bold.

Start of a big refurb job in my house today. Was dreading it. But in the crew came, they didn't social distance, I kind of took a step back and showed them the big bottle of hand sanitiser. Nope, they wash hands regularly they said.

Got the gist of what they had to do, left my number, locked away the valuables, and fecked off for the day. Not a great day to be out and about but better than listening to the noise and dust and stuff.

Anyway, got the call that they were finishing up for the day in half an hour. Got home and honest to god I cannot believe how immaculate they left the place. Better than my cleaning anyway.

But still you never know what strangers will bring in to the house. Have to be brave though and get the work done! Hopefully all will be well, they are here for three more days, and I'm running out of places to escape to!

Yep. I thought that was a very politically astute message; if the test results increase next week, he can claim ‘I told you so’ and can implement tightened restrictions with something to justify it and if the results decrease, he can claim, ‘Well done all, these are the great things we can accomplish if we look after each other......’ etc etc.

It's still at a 3% death rate worldwide. You cannot get away from that.

3 percent. And I would imagine the amount of elderly and people with underlying conditions in that 3 percent is large majority.

Take your scare mask elsewhere and do us all a favour.

3%? Can you point me to the source or reference info on this?

I’m completely anti restrictions. But i kind of think it would be hilarious if they try to lockdown Dublin or anywhere else with 0 deaths in weeks and 6 in ICU.

It would really go from car crash to train wreck then!

Wouldn’t surprise me if NPHET recommend it.

A single life is more important than the economy apparently. Even if the single life is 98% complete.

Would you be in favour of completely opening up? Full stadiums? Copper face jacks?
